Choosing a women's bra: a practical guide to comfort, support and the right fit

A women's bra should fit well without constantly digging in, shifting or showing through clothing. However, comparing products online can be difficult. Product photos often focus mainly on the colour and shape, while important details about sizing, material and support are less clear.

The following three pitfalls are common:

  • Stretch fabric is mistaken for good support. A high degree of stretch can be comfortable, but it does not automatically mean that a bra is suitable for intense sport or a larger cup size.
  • The size is chosen based on clothing size. A size S or M varies by brand and model. Bust measurement, underbust measurement and the product's size chart are more important.
  • “Seamless”, “shaping” or “compression” is interpreted too broadly. A seamless bra is particularly useful under close-fitting clothing. A shapewear bra shapes the body visually, but is not necessarily suitable for post-operative recovery. With a post-operative bra, the treating doctor or surgeon should determine which level of support is appropriate.

Which specifications should you check?

1. Fit and size chart

Always check the following before buying:

  • the bust and underbust measurements in centimetres;
  • the recommended cup size or stated size range;
  • the length and adjustability of the shoulder straps;
  • whether the model has fixed cups, removable pads or no cups;
  • whether the bra is designed for a slim, regular or plus-size fit.

A one-size model can be useful when the fabric has plenty of stretch, but the fit still depends on your body shape. For example, the likeuu racerback models give a size range based on bust measurement, weight and height. According to the product description, One Size is intended for a bust measurement of 70–85 cm, while the Plus version is intended for 80–95 cm. Use this information as a guide, not as a guarantee for every body shape.

2. Support level and use

Choose the level of support based on the activity:

  • Everyday wear: a comfortable wire-free or seamless bra may be sufficient.
  • Walking, yoga or light exercise: a women's sports bra with light support and a racerback design provides freedom of movement.
  • Running or intense training: look for a clearly stated higher level of support, a firm band and good coverage.
  • Recovery after a procedure: a post-surgery compression bra or post-operative bra should only be used according to the instructions of your treating healthcare professional.

A lightly supportive bra is not the same as a compression bra. A front-fastening bra may also be easier to put on, but the fastening alone says nothing about the level of compression.

3. Material, seams and care

Nylon and spandex generally provide stretch and a close fit. Cotton with elastane can feel comfortable for everyday wear and relaxed exercise. Also look for:

  • wide or adjustable shoulder straps;
  • an elasticated underband that stays flat;
  • smooth seams when worn under close-fitting clothing;
  • care instructions, such as hand washing or washing at a low temperature;
  • air drying instead of exposure to high heat.

A delicate bra that may only be hand-washed requires more care than a model that can go in the washing machine. This may be relevant if you are looking for several bras for everyday wear.

Frequently asked questions about women's bras

How do I know which women's bra size I need?

Measure your underbust directly below your breasts and your bust at the fullest point. Compare both measurements with the size chart for the specific product. With wire-free models or those containing plenty of stretch, the fit may feel different from that of a traditional bra with a fixed band and cup size.

How long does a bra typically last?

Its lifespan depends on how often it is worn, the material, the fit and how it is cared for. A bra that is worn and washed frequently will generally wear out faster than a model that is rotated with others. A loose underband, misshapen cups or shoulder straps that remain stretched are signs that it is time for a replacement. Follow the washing instructions and avoid unnecessarily high temperatures.

Which bra is suitable after breast surgery or liposuction?

This varies depending on the procedure and stage of recovery. A product may be designed as a post-operative bra or post-surgery compression bra according to the brand description, but that does not automatically make it suitable for your situation. Ask your surgeon or treating doctor about the desired level of compression, the fastening and how long you may wear the garment.
