Choosing wireless noise-cancelling headphones: specifications and pitfalls to look out for

Wireless noise-cancelling headphones can be ideal on the train, in the office, during a flight or when you want to listen to music at home. However, a high ANC rating does not tell you everything. A model may look impressive on paper, but disappoint in practice because of a poor fit, short battery life or limited compatibility with your phone.

These checks will help you quickly identify which Bluetooth headphones, ANC headphones or wireless noise-cancelling earbuds suit the way you use them.

Three common noise-cancelling pitfalls

1. A big ANC claim does not tell you how the headphones feel

Brands sometimes use figures such as “-45 dB” or “98.5% noise reduction”. According to the brand’s own research, such a figure may have been measured under specific test conditions. Results can vary depending on your ears, surroundings and frequency.

Active noise cancellation generally works more effectively with consistent low-frequency sounds, such as a train engine or aircraft noise. Voices and sudden sounds are not always filtered out completely. So also look for a transparency mode and consider the fit.

2. Battery life is not always stated under the same conditions

Headphones for travel and work may offer, for example, 50 to 80 hours of playback without ANC, while usage time is lower with noise cancellation switched on. With earbuds, you also need to distinguish between playback time per charge and total playback time including the charging case.

Pay attention to these three details:

  • Battery life with ANC switched on
  • Battery life without ANC
  • Fast-charging time and charging connection, usually USB-C

3. Water resistance is often interpreted more broadly than intended

An IPX4 rating means protection against splashing water, such as sweat or light rain. This does not make a model suitable for swimming. An IP57 rating offers greater protection against dust and temporary immersion according to the product specification, but always check the official usage conditions.

Wireless in-ear headphones for sport also need to stay securely in place. A lightweight design and several fit options are at least as important as the ANC function.

Important specifications to compare

In-ear or over-ear?

Wireless noise-cancelling earbuds are small, lightweight and easy to carry. They are well suited to commuting, calls and exercise. However, check whether several ear-tip sizes or stability bands are included. The wrong fit can reduce both comfort and sound isolation.

Wireless over-ear headphones cover the entire ear. This design can be comfortable for long listening sessions and travelling. Pay attention to the weight, headband pressure and size of the ear cushions. A foldable model takes up less space in your bag.

Bluetooth version, codecs and multipoint

Bluetooth 5.2, 5.3 or 6.0 mainly refers to the wireless connection and efficiency. Your actual experience also depends on your phone, laptop and software. For everyday use, these features are particularly relevant:

  • Multipoint: connects to, for example, a laptop and smartphone at the same time.
  • AAC and SBC: widely used Bluetooth audio codecs.
  • LDAC: supports a higher data transfer rate according to the product specification, but both your phone and headphones must support it.
  • Microphones: important for headphones used for music and calls.

If you use an iPhone, pairing with Apple models is generally straightforward within the Apple ecosystem. Android users can also use AirPods, although some features may be more limited. Samsung users will generally get more from Galaxy Buds when using them with Galaxy devices.

Battery life and charging case

For headphones with long battery life, the figures with ANC switched on are the most useful. An over-ear model may offer, for example, 35 to 40 hours with ANC. In-ear models often provide less battery life per charge, but the charging case extends the total usage time.

Also check whether the case supports wireless charging, whether a USB-C cable is included and how long a short charge will last.

Frequently asked questions about wireless noise-cancelling headphones

Does noise cancellation work without music?

Yes. With active noise cancellation, microphones can measure ambient sound and produce opposing sound waves. The effect varies depending on your surroundings. Consistent low-frequency sounds are generally processed differently from voices or unexpected noises. The battery is normally used when ANC is switched on.

How long do wireless headphones last?

Their lifespan depends on battery usage, charging cycles, software and physical wear. A built-in lithium-ion battery loses capacity over time. Keep the headphones dry, avoid extreme heat and charge them according to the instructions. In the Netherlands, consumers are also covered by the statutory expectation of conformity; the exact rights depend on the product and the circumstances of the defect.

Are ANC headphones suitable for cycling?

Do not use full noise cancellation when you need to hear traffic, bicycle bells or other warning signals. In such situations, it is better to choose transparency mode, keep the volume low or avoid using headphones altogether. Also check the IP rating when looking for a model for exercise or rainy weather.
