Choosing wireless noise-cancelling earbuds: what to look for before you buy

Wireless noise-cancelling earbuds can look very similar on paper. In practice, though, you’ll soon notice the difference between a model for your daily commute, a pair for exercise and headphones for long listening sessions. A low price doesn’t automatically mean a product is practical, but a high price doesn’t guarantee that either.

Look out for these three common pitfalls:

  • Battery claims without clear conditions: “Up to 40 hours” often includes the charging case and sometimes applies only when ANC is switched off. Compare the battery life per charge as well as the total battery life with the case.
  • Confusing noise cancelling with complete silence: Active noise cancelling, or ANC, is most effective against constant sounds such as train engines and aircraft noise. Voices, sudden sounds and wind aren’t always reduced as effectively.
  • A fit that doesn’t suit how you use them: Loose in-ear earbuds can shift when you’re walking or exercising. Over-ear headphones may feel more secure and comfortable for work, but take up more space.

Which specifications really matter?

1. ANC, ambient mode and microphones

Don’t just look for the noise cancelling label. Check whether the product has several modes, such as ANC, transparency mode or an ambient mode. These let you hear surrounding sounds when you’re walking in traffic or having a conversation.

For calls, microphones and call noise-reduction software are important. Manufacturers may make their own claims about these features. Treat “clear calls” as a promise from the brand, and also look for details you can verify, such as the number of microphones, multipoint support and available call controls.

Noise-cancelling headphones with closed-back ear cups reduce sound differently from in-ear headphones. The right choice depends on your preferences for comfort, size and where you’ll use them.

2. Battery life and charging case

Check three figures:

  1. Earbud battery life with ANC on.
  2. Battery life with ANC off.
  3. Total battery life with the charging case.

A model with long-lasting earbuds is handy for travel and working days, but only if the case itself is practical to charge. USB-C is now common. Some models also support wireless charging or fast charging.

Watch out for conflicting information between the marketing copy and the specifications table. If in doubt, go by the most specific product specification and check the product page before you order.

3. Fit, connection and protection

True wireless earbuds have no cable connecting the left and right earbuds. This gives you more freedom to move, but makes a good fit especially important. Check whether several ear tip sizes or stability bands are included.

For a stable connection, Bluetooth 5.3 earbuds or a newer Bluetooth profile are a practical choice. Multipoint is useful if you want to connect to a laptop and smartphone at the same time. Also check compatibility with iOS, Android and any companion apps from the brand.

An IP rating shows the type of dust or moisture a product has been tested against. IPX4, for example, means protection against splashes of water according to the relevant rating, but doesn’t mean the earbuds are suitable for submersion. The charging case may also have a different rating from the earbuds.

Frequently asked questions about wireless noise-cancelling earbuds

Does noise cancelling work during calls?

That depends on the microphones, software and surroundings. ANC is primarily designed to reduce noise for the listener. Models often use separate microphones and noise reduction for calls to make your voice clearer to the person you’re speaking to. So check the call specifications and user instructions in particular.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Their lifespan depends on battery use, charging cycles, storage and care. Keep your earbuds in the charging case, keep the connections dry and avoid prolonged exposure to heat. An IP rating doesn’t automatically mean a model is suitable for swimming or prolonged contact with water.

Are Bluetooth earbuds suitable for exercise?

They can be, provided they fit securely and their water resistance is suitable for your activity. Sports earbuds with an appropriate IP rating are more practical in sweaty conditions or light rain. Also check whether the charging case has the same level of protection as the earbuds. When cycling or in traffic, switch on transparency mode or avoid wearing earbuds if you need full awareness of your surroundings.
