Buying wireless headphones: how to choose a model that suits the way you use it

A pair of wireless headphones may seem straightforward to choose at first glance. Yet marketing terms, unclear battery figures and a poor fit regularly lead to disappointing purchases. For example, a model may promise long playback time but last much less with active noise cancellation switched on. And “noise cancelling” does not always mean active noise cancellation.

Use these practical selection points to compare Bluetooth headphones based on features that really matter in everyday use: comfort, battery life, sound isolation, calls and connectivity.

Three common pitfalls when buying wireless headphones

1. Noise cancelling does not always mean active noise cancellation

Some product pages mention “noise cancelling”, while the specifications only refer to passive sound isolation. This means that the ear cushions partially reduce surrounding noise, without microphones and electronics to counter unwanted sound waves.

Looking for headphones with noise cancelling for train journeys, flights or a busy office? Check that the specifications explicitly state “active” or “ANC”. A transparency mode, which lets you hear surrounding sounds, is also useful for conversations and traffic situations.

2. Battery life does not always apply to every usage mode

“Up to 60 hours” is usually a maximum figure measured under specific conditions. ANC, high volume levels, phone calls and Bluetooth codecs can all affect playback time. Therefore, compare:

  • battery life with ANC switched off;
  • battery life with ANC switched on;
  • charging time and fast-charging function;
  • charging via USB-C;
  • the option to continue listening with a cable.

Headphones with long battery life are particularly practical for travelling and working days, but a short charging time can be just as important.

3. Comfort and weight are often underestimated

Comfortable headphones should not only feel soft during the first few minutes. Also consider the pressure from the headband, the depth of the ear cushions and the weight. A heavy model can become tiring during long listening sessions. An overly loose fit also reduces sound isolation and may affect how well ANC works.

Wireless over-ear headphones usually enclose the ear better than an on-ear model, but they take up more space. If you travel frequently, you may therefore prefer foldable headphones or a lightweight model.

Important specifications to compare

Bluetooth version and connection

Bluetooth 5.0 or higher is a common choice. However, the Bluetooth version alone does not determine overall sound quality. Also check support for codecs such as AAC, SBC, LDAC or aptX Lossless. The codec used depends on both the headphones and the smartphone or laptop.

For work and calls, a built-in microphone, multipoint and a stable connection are useful features. Multipoint allows you to keep, for example, a laptop and smartphone connected at the same time. A 3.5 mm or USB-C wired connection can be useful when the battery runs out.

Battery and charging

Do not look only at the highest figure. A model with 30 hours of battery life and a short fast-charging function may be more convenient in practice than a model with a longer maximum playback time but a lengthy charging period. Also check whether a charger is included. With some models, you receive only a cable.

ANC, transparency and microphones

ANC uses microphones to detect surrounding sounds. Its performance varies between models and types of noise. Constant low-frequency sounds, such as the noise of a train engine, are often processed differently from voices or sudden sounds. Therefore, treat brand claims as product information rather than a guarantee of a completely silent environment.

For headphones for music and calls, multiple microphones and wind-noise reduction are relevant specifications. If you cycle or walk outdoors, you must also be able to continue hearing enough of your surroundings. Do not use headphones while driving, and follow Dutch traffic regulations.

Frequently asked questions about wireless headphones

How do I connect wireless headphones to my phone?

Switch on the headphones and activate pairing mode. Then open the Bluetooth settings on your phone, select the product name and confirm the connection. When pairing for the first time, the manufacturer’s app may offer additional settings. Check that the headphones have sufficient charge.

How long do wireless headphones last?

Battery capacity, volume, ANC and charging habits all affect usage time. The battery may provide less capacity over time. Do not leave wireless headphones completely discharged for long periods, and do not expose the built-in battery to extreme heat. The legal guarantee in the EU is at least two years; additional rights may apply under the relevant national law.

Do Bluetooth headphones use a lot of power?

Bluetooth headphones use relatively little power while listening, but ANC and high volume levels can reduce battery life. In practical terms, the biggest cost is usually not daily electricity consumption but a possible replacement when the battery no longer provides sufficient capacity after prolonged use. When buying, therefore, also consider charging convenience, the guarantee and the option to listen via a wired connection.
