Choosing wireless headphones: practical buying tips and popular picks

A pair of wireless headphones may seem simple to choose at first glance. However, models vary considerably in comfort, battery life, noise isolation and call quality. A low price is not automatically a bargain if the fit is uncomfortable or the connection regularly drops out.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • Looking only at battery life: manufacturers often state the maximum playback time under specific conditions. With active noise cancellation, high volume or lots of phone calls, actual battery life may be lower.
  • Treating a high ANC figure as a guarantee: a claim such as “up to -45 dB” does not say exactly how voices, traffic or low-frequency hum will be reduced in your surroundings. The fit and seal of the ear cushions also play a major role.
  • Confusing the Bluetooth version with sound quality: Bluetooth 5.3 or 5.4 can contribute to a modern connection, but says nothing about the sound on its own. Also check the supported codecs, such as SBC, AAC or LDAC, and compatibility with your smartphone.

Which specifications matter?

1. Fit: over-ear, on-ear or in-ear

Over-ear headphones completely surround your ears. This can be comfortable when travelling, working from home or listening for long periods. The downside is a larger size and potentially more warmth around your ears.

An in-ear model, such as wireless earbuds or true wireless earbuds, is more compact and easy to take with you. Choosing the right ear tip size is important for comfort and sound isolation. Some models come with several sizes of silicone ear tips.

For sports and outdoor use, the IP rating is also relevant. IPX4, for example, means splash resistance, but a model with this rating should not be submerged. Always check whether the charging case has the same protection as the earbuds.

2. Active noise cancellation and transparency mode

Active noise cancellation, often referred to as ANC, uses microphones and electronics to reduce ambient sound. This can be useful on the train, in the office or during a flight. It is not a substitute for hearing protection and will not completely eliminate every sound.

A transparency mode lets surrounding sounds through. This is practical when you want to have a conversation or need to stay alert. For this reason, do not use headphones while cycling, driving or in other situations where you need to hear traffic clearly.

3. Battery, charging and connection

Compare battery life with ANC switched on and off. According to the product specification, the Sony WH-CH720N is listed with up to 35 hours with noise cancellation and up to 50 hours without it. The Soundcore Space One is listed with battery life of up to 55 hours.

Also look out for:

  • USB-C: useful if you use the same cable for your phone and other devices.
  • Fast charging: particularly useful if you are often on the go.
  • Multipoint: this allows headphones to be connected to, for example, a laptop and smartphone at the same time.
  • Wired connection: a 3.5mm cable can be useful when the battery is empty or when travelling by plane.

For headphones for music and calls, multiple microphones and noise reduction for calls are important. However, how clearly you can be heard still depends on wind, background noise, the app being used and the position of the microphones.

Frequently asked questions about wireless headphones

Are Bluetooth headphones suitable for calls?

Yes, provided the model has a microphone that clearly picks up your voice. For conversations outdoors, multiple microphones and some form of noise reduction for calls are useful. Also check that the headphones are compatible with your smartphone, laptop and calling apps.

How long do wireless headphones last?

Battery life per charge ranges from a few hours for compact earbuds to dozens of hours for an over-ear model. The device’s overall lifespan depends on charging habits, heat, moisture and everyday use. A model with a wired option remains usable when the battery has lost capacity.

Does noise cancelling use a lot of battery?

ANC uses additional electronics and can reduce battery life. Always compare the stated usage time with active noise cancellation and without ANC. With wireless earbuds, the charging case also contributes to the total playback time.
