Choosing wireless headphones: how to avoid a poor purchase

Wireless headphones are handy when you’re out and about, at the office, exercising or gaming. However, a long list of features does not automatically mean that a model will suit the way you use it. For example, Bluetooth headphones may offer long battery life but be uncomfortable to wear. Noise-cancelling headphones can reduce a lot of background noise, but they are not always suitable for traffic or sports.

So focus mainly on verifiable specifications and how you intend to use the product.

Three common pitfalls when choosing wireless headphones

1. Battery claims without clear testing conditions

“Up to 80 hours of playback” sounds appealing, but actual battery life depends on factors including volume, the Bluetooth connection, lighting and active noise cancellation. Check whether the manufacturer distinguishes between battery life with and without ANC. Also check whether fast charging is mentioned and which connector is used, usually USB-C.

2. Mistaking noise cancellation for complete silence

Active noise cancellation, or ANC, uses microphones and electronics to reduce mainly constant sounds, such as train engines or aircraft noise. Voices, sudden sounds and wind may still be audible. Claims such as “up to -45 dB” or a specific percentage of noise reduction come from the brand’s product information. Practical performance can vary depending on the surroundings and the fit.

3. Interpreting water resistance too broadly

An IPX5 rating does not mean that a product is suitable for submersion or swimming. IP ratings relate to specific conditions. Sports headphones with protection against sweat and splashes are different from waterproof headphones designed for swimming. Always check the full IP rating and usage warnings.

Important specifications to check

Bluetooth version and connectivity options

Bluetooth 5.3, 5.4 or 6.0 may indicate a modern connection on paper, but compatibility also depends on your phone, laptop, tablet or games console. So don’t look only at the version number. Also check:

  • Whether the model supports multipoint, for example connecting to your phone and laptop at the same time.
  • Which audio codecs are available, such as SBC, AAC or LDAC.
  • Whether a wired connection is possible when the battery runs out.
  • Whether a gaming headset requires a USB dongle or 2.4GHz connection.

For a PlayStation, a wireless gaming headset with 2.4GHz may be more practical than Bluetooth. Check which mode works with PS4, PS5, PC, Mac or mobile devices for each product.

Wearing style and comfort

Over-ear headphones surround the ear and can passively reduce background noise. This type is often suitable for travelling, the office and long listening sessions, but it is larger and warmer to wear. An on-ear model rests on the ear and is usually more compact.

Wireless earbuds are lightweight and easy to carry. Fit is particularly important here: an earbud that does not seal properly may deliver less bass and less effective ANC. Pay attention to the weight, the shape of the ear tips and whether spare tips are included.

For sports, an ear hook, neckband or open-ear design can provide a more secure fit. Bone-conduction headphones leave the ear canal open, but the listening experience differs from that of standard in-ear or over-ear models. When running or cycling, also use a mode that allows you to remain aware of traffic.

Microphone, battery and safety

If you make lots of calls or attend online meetings, you need headphones with a microphone. The number of microphones alone does not determine how clearly you will be heard. Wind, the distance from your mouth and software-based noise cancellation also play a part.

Do not use headphones at high volume for extended periods. A high-capacity battery contains lithium and must be charged with the supplied or suitable cable, away from damp conditions. A swimming model should only be used in accordance with the accompanying instructions; always make sure a charging port is completely dry before charging.

Frequently asked questions about wireless headphones

How do I connect Bluetooth headphones to my phone?

First charge the headphones, switch them on and activate pairing mode. Then open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the product name. If the connection does not work, remove a previous pairing or check whether the headphones are already connected to another device.

How long do wireless headphones last?

Lifespan depends on the battery, charging frequency, storage and exposure to moisture and heat. A battery capacity of, for example, 40, 50 or 80 hours says nothing about how many years the headphones will last. Store the product in a dry place, avoid maximum volume for extended periods and do not use a damaged battery.

Does noise cancellation use more battery?

Yes, active noise cancellation uses additional electronics and usually reduces playback time. Always check the quoted battery life with ANC switched on. For quiet listening, ANC can be switched off to make the battery last longer.
