Choosing wireless earbuds: how to avoid disappointing purchases and find the right model

Wireless earbuds are convenient for listening to music, making calls, travelling, working and exercising. However, a long list of features does not always tell you much about everyday use. For example, a model with active noise cancellation may be less suitable when cycling, while a long battery life may only apply when certain features are switched off.

So don’t just focus on the brand name or discount. Consider the fit, battery performance, protection against moisture and how you will actually use the earbuds.

Three common pitfalls when choosing Bluetooth earbuds

1. Battery life without clear conditions

A manufacturer may quote a high total play time that includes several recharges from the case. The battery life of the earbuds themselves may then be considerably lower. ANC, high volume and phone calls can also reduce operating time.

Always check:

  • the play time per full charge;
  • the total play time including the charging case;
  • the play time with and without ANC;
  • whether fast charging is mentioned;
  • whether the charging case can be charged via USB-C or wirelessly.

Some models even have different figures across product listings. Therefore, use the current specifications on the product page as your starting point.

2. ANC is mistaken for complete silence

Active noise cancellation, also known as ANC, uses microphones and electronics to reduce ambient noise. The result depends on the fit, the type of sound and your surroundings. Low, continuous sounds such as train engines are generally a different use case from voices or sudden noises.

According to product information from Sony, Bose, JBL and Apple, among others, their models feature ANC or ambient sound modes. Treat this brand information as a description of the feature, not a guarantee of complete sound isolation. A transparency mode can instead be useful in the office or while travelling.

3. The wrong fit makes good technology unusable

In-ear earbuds do not fit every ear equally well. A poor fit can cause a loose feeling, weaker bass and the need for more frequent adjustments. Check whether extra ear tips or different sizes are included. For example, the Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds are supplied with additional fit options according to their product information.

Open-ear models and clip-on earbuds work differently. They do not seal the ear canal, allowing you to stay more aware of your surroundings. This can be useful when walking, cooking or working, but ambient noise may also remain more noticeable while travelling.

Important specifications to compare

Bluetooth and connectivity

Almost all wireless earbuds work via Bluetooth. A newer Bluetooth version can offer benefits in terms of efficiency and connectivity, but on its own it does not tell you everything about sound quality.

Pay particular attention to:

  • support for two devices, also known as multipoint;
  • compatibility with Android, iOS, Windows or macOS;
  • support for codecs such as AAC, SBC or LDAC;
  • whether an app is available for equaliser and firmware settings;
  • the quality of the microphones for calls.

Multipoint is practical if you often switch between a laptop and phone. However, check that this feature is supported on both devices.

Water and dust resistance

An IP rating consists of numbers, or a number and a letter. The first value generally refers to protection against solid particles, while the second refers to moisture. IPX4, for example, means protection against splashing water according to the stated classification, but not against immersion.

A higher rating does not automatically mean that every component is equally protected. For example, the Sony WF-C710N is listed with IPX4 for the earbuds; the charging case must remain dry before you connect it. According to the product information, the JBL Wave Buds 2 have an IP54 rating for the earbuds and IPX2 for the case.

So don’t use sports earbuds in the swimming pool, and don’t charge a wet case immediately.

Battery and wearing style

If you listen every day, you could choose earbuds with long battery life or wireless headphones with a larger battery. On-ear models are usually bigger, but do not need to be placed in the ear canal. According to the product specifications, the Sony WH-CH520 comes with an adjustable headband, soft ear cushions and multipoint connectivity. The stated battery life varies between product listings, so check the current figure on the product page.

An on-ear or over-ear model is often suitable for working from home and long train journeys. True wireless earbuds are more compact and fit more easily into a coat pocket.

Frequently asked questions about wireless earbuds

How do I connect wireless earbuds to my phone?

Switch on Bluetooth, open the charging case and follow the model’s pairing instructions. When connecting for the first time, the name of the earbuds will appear in the Bluetooth list. If pairing does not work, place the earbuds back in the case, charge them and check that they are not already connected to another device.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Battery life per charge varies by model and settings. Overall lifespan also depends on battery wear, charging habits and daily use. Store the earbuds in their case, avoid heat and do not use a damaged cable or charging accessory. If a battery is visibly swollen or becomes unusually hot, stop using it.

Are wireless earbuds suitable for exercise?

That depends on the fit and IP rating. Choose a model that stays securely in place and check which components are resistant to splashing water. ANC can reduce your ability to hear traffic and other ambient sounds during outdoor exercise. Use a transparency mode or open-ear model when awareness of your surroundings is important, and listen at a moderate volume.
