Choosing wireless earbuds: a practical guide to sound, comfort and battery life

Wireless earbuds are handy for music, calls, travel and exercise. However, a long list of features does not automatically mean that a model will suit the way you use it every day. A compact set, for example, may run out of charge quickly, fit poorly or be less suitable for calls in a busy environment.

So pay particular attention to these common pitfalls:

  • An impressive battery figure without context: total playback time including the charging case is not the same as the usage time of a single earbud. Noise cancellation, volume and codec settings can affect battery life.
  • Noise cancellation as a guarantee of silence: active noise cancellation works mainly against constant sounds, such as the hum of a train. Voices, sudden noises and traffic will not be filtered out completely.
  • Misinterpreting water resistance: an IPX5 or IP54 rating does not mean you can submerge the earbuds. Also check whether the charging case is protected, and never charge a damp case.
  • Assessing comfort only after purchase: the shape, weight and included ear tips determine whether true wireless earbuds stay securely in place. A lightweight set will not automatically be comfortable for every ear.

Which specifications should you check?

1. Battery life and charging

Look at two separate figures: the playback time of the earbuds themselves and the total battery life with the charging case. For daily commuting, several hours per charge may be enough. If you are planning long flights, working days or study sessions, a charging case with several additional charges will be more useful.

A USB-C connection is practical because the same cable is often used for a phone, tablet or laptop too. Some models also support wireless charging. Always check whether a charging cable is included, as this varies by product.

2. Bluetooth, codecs and connectivity

With Bluetooth earbuds, a recent Bluetooth version is not a direct guarantee of better sound. Also check support for your phone and the available audio codecs. The Baseus Bass EP10 Pro, for example, lists SBC, AAC and LDAC, while other models mainly use SBC and AAC.

A multipoint connection is useful if you regularly switch between a smartphone and a laptop. However, check that this feature is actually listed in the product specifications. Google Fast Pair can make pairing easier for Android users, while Microsoft Swift Pair offers the same benefit for Windows users.

3. Fit, microphone and IP rating

For earbuds for calls and music, microphone placement and noise reduction during calls are more important than simply the number of microphones. Brands may provide their own test results or marketing claims, but do not treat these as a universal guarantee. The product descriptions for some models, such as the MINISO MS106 and Baseus Bass EP10 Pro, mention AI or microphone noise cancellation. Actual call quality may vary depending on your surroundings and phone.

When exercising, pay attention to the IP code:

  • IP54: protection against dust and splashing water, depending on the exact classification.
  • IP55: limited protection against water jets; not intended for submersion.
  • IPX5: protection against water jets, but not against swimming.
  • IP57: greater protection against dust and temporary submersion under the specified test conditions.

An IP rating says nothing about long-term resistance to sweat, wear on the rubber components or protection for the charging case. Store and charge the earbuds in a dry place.

Frequently asked questions about wireless earbuds

How do I pair Bluetooth earbuds with my phone?

Open the charging case, switch on Bluetooth on your phone and select the product name from the list of available devices. If automatic pairing does not work, place the earbuds back in the case and press and hold the pairing button. Also check that they are not already connected to another device.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Their lifespan depends on battery wear, charging habits, moisture and everyday use. The built-in battery is usually not designed to be replaced by the user. Storing the earbuds in a dry place, using a moderate volume and keeping the ear tips clean can help extend their useful life. Also check the statutory guarantee and returns policy when buying.

Are noise-cancelling earbuds suitable for cycling?

Active noise cancellation can reduce surrounding noise. This is not desirable when you need to hear traffic or other road users clearly. When cycling, only use a setting that allows you to remain sufficiently aware of your surroundings, and follow local traffic regulations. No feature can replace paying attention to the environment around you.
