Buying wireless earbuds with noise cancellation: how to choose without falling into marketing traps

Wireless earbuds with noise cancellation are useful on the train, in the office, while studying and during phone calls. However, a high decibel rating or long battery life does not tell you everything. The fit, microphone and protection rating are at least as important in determining whether you will enjoy using the earbuds every day.

If you only pay attention to an eye-catching product title, you may end up paying too much for features that do not suit the way you use them. Below, you can read which specifications to check and which Bluetooth earbuds are suitable for different situations.

Three common pitfalls of earbuds with active noise cancellation

1. A high ANC rating does not guarantee silence

Brands sometimes quote figures such as -49 or -50 dB. According to the brand’s own testing or the product description, this may have been measured under specific conditions. In practice, the result also depends on the fit, the ear tips used and the type of sound.

Low-frequency train noise is generally easier to reduce than voices or sudden sounds. So also check whether a model has a transparency mode. This allows surrounding sounds through when you are walking along the street or having a conversation.

2. Total battery life can give a distorted impression

A figure such as 40, 44 or 55 hours usually refers to the earbuds plus the charging case. Playback time per individual charge is often around 6 to 12 hours, depending on the volume, codec and noise cancellation.

When comparing earbuds with long battery life, look out for:

  • playback time with ANC switched on;
  • additional hours provided by the charging case;
  • fast-charging time and the number of minutes of playback available after a short charge;
  • charging via USB-C or wireless charging.

3. Water-resistant does not mean waterproof

An IPX4 rating means protection against splashing water. IPX5 or IP55 offers greater protection against water jets, but is not intended for submersion. According to the product specification, IP57 provides a higher level of protection against dust and temporary submersion, but always follow the instructions.

For sports earbuds, resistance to sweat and splashing is important. However, dry the earbuds and charging case before connecting them to a charger. The charging case may have a different IP rating from the earbuds.

Which specifications really matter?

Active noise cancellation and ambient mode

Active noise cancellation, also known as ANC, uses microphones to detect surrounding sounds and produce an opposing signal. Its performance varies by model and situation. A good seal in the ear canal remains important, so try the different sizes of ear tips provided.

An ambient mode is useful when cycling, crossing the road and travelling. Do not use noise cancellation in situations where you need to hear traffic noise or warnings.

Bluetooth version, codecs and multipoint

Bluetooth 5.3, 5.4 or 6.0 mainly indicates the connection standard being used. Actual stability also depends on your phone, laptop and software. Several models quote a range of around 10 metres, but walls and interference can reduce this.

Codecs are relevant for high-fidelity audio. The Baseus Bass EP10 Pro, for example, lists SBC, AAC and LDAC, while the Sony WF-1000XM5 lists AAC, LC3, LDAC and SBC. Your phone must support the codec as well. If you switch between a laptop and smartphone, multipoint or a similar feature is useful.

Microphones and call quality

Earbuds with a microphone are not automatically good earbuds for making calls. Look at the number of microphones and check for features that reduce background or wind noise. The MINISO MS106 and Soundcore Liberty 4 NC each list six microphones. OnePlus mentions three microphones combined with a VPU sensor and an AI algorithm.

These are specifications from the product information. According to a brand’s own testing, call quality may be clear in a particular test environment, but your results will depend on wind, traffic, positioning and the calling app being used.

Fit, weight and protection

A good fit prevents you from constantly readjusting the earbuds and also helps with passive noise isolation. Look out for:

  • multiple sizes of silicone ear tips;
  • weight per earbud;
  • stability wings or an ear hook for sport;
  • IP rating;
  • controls operated by tapping, pressing or swiping.

Open-ear models, such as the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, allow you to hear your surroundings more clearly because they do not seal your ears completely. They are therefore a different option from wireless in-ear headphones with strong ANC.

Frequently asked questions about wireless earbuds with noise cancellation

Does noise cancellation work during calls?

ANC is mainly intended to reduce noise for the listener. For the person on the other end of the call, microphones and call noise reduction are more important. So look at the number of microphones and check whether the product information explicitly mentions call noise reduction.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Battery capacity decreases over time. Practical service life depends on charging cycles, heat, moisture and storage. Keep the earbuds in their case, do not charge them in a damp environment and keep the volume at a moderate level. Also check the statutory warranty and service information provided with the product.

Are earbuds with noise cancellation more expensive to use?

In addition to the purchase price, you use electricity to charge the case and possibly data for a companion app or firmware update. This usage is generally limited. Pay particular attention to replaceable ear tips, charging cables, warranty terms and the availability of spare parts. This helps prevent a minor fault from immediately requiring replacement of the entire set.
