Choosing wireless earbuds without falling into marketing traps

Wireless earbuds are handy for listening to music, making calls, travelling, working and exercising. However, a long list of features does not automatically mean that a model is right for the way you use it. A low price may seem attractive, for example, while the fit turns out to be disappointing. Terms such as ANC, AI microphones and “long battery life” can also give an incomplete picture.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • Battery claims without clear usage conditions: the stated playback time often applies without active noise cancellation, at a particular volume or with the charging case included.
  • Misinterpreting water resistance: an IP rating usually applies only to the earbuds, not the case. What’s more, water resistance does not automatically mean that they are suitable for swimming.
  • Confusing noise cancellation with complete silence: ANC earbuds reduce certain surrounding sounds, but do not block out every noise. According to a brand’s own research, a noise reduction figure may sound impressive, but real-world performance also depends on the fit and your surroundings.

Which specifications are important?

1. Fit and wearing style

With wireless in-ear earbuds, silicone ear tips partially seal the ear canal. This can provide passive noise isolation and a more secure fit. Check whether several sizes of ear tips are included. A good seal is important for music, phone calls and ANC performance.

Not everyone finds an in-ear design comfortable. Clip-on sports earbuds or open-ear models sit around or on the ear and let in more surrounding sound. This can be practical when walking or exercising, but the sound isolation is generally different from that of closed in-ear models.

2. Battery life: look at one charge and the case

Compare two figures:

  • Playback time per earbud: how long you can listen before the earbuds need to go back in the case.
  • Total battery life with the case: the number of additional charges the case can provide.

ANC earbuds generally use more power when active noise cancellation is switched on. Manufacturers therefore often provide different figures for ANC on and off. The JBL Wave Buds 2, for example, are described as offering up to 40 hours of total playback time when ANC is switched off, while the technical specifications also state a playback time of up to 8 hours. Always check which testing method the claim refers to.

A USB-C connection is now practical for everyday use, as you can often use the same cable for your phone, tablet and case. Some models also support wireless charging.

3. Connection, calls and codecs

Almost all Bluetooth earbuds work with modern smartphones, tablets and laptops. However, check whether additional features depend on an app or a particular operating system. The QCY Melobuds Neo, for example, supports the QCY app for iOS and Android.

For calls, it is not just the number of microphones and terms such as ENC or AI that matter. Wind, traffic and the distance from your phone also affect how clearly you can be heard. Treat “AI noise cancellation” as a product specification rather than a guarantee of perfect conversations.

For music, codecs such as SBC, AAC and LDAC may be relevant. The Baseus Bass EP10 Pro lists support for SBC, AAC and LDAC. Whether you can hear the difference depends on your smartphone, audio source and settings.

Frequently asked questions about wireless earbuds

How do I pair wireless earbuds with my phone?

Open the case, remove the earbuds and switch on Bluetooth on your phone. Select the product name from the list of available devices. An app may be required when connecting for the first time. If pairing does not work, put the earbuds back in the case, briefly switch Bluetooth off and try again.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Battery life per charge often ranges from a few hours to around 10 or 11 hours, depending on volume, codec and ANC. Total playback time with the case is usually longer. The lifespan of the built-in battery decreases over time. For this reason, do not store the earbuds in heat for extended periods and charge them with a suitable USB-C charger.

Are wireless earbuds suitable for calls and exercise?

Yes, many models have a built-in microphone and an IP rating. When using them for exercise, check whether the rating provides protection against sweat and splashing. For calls, pay attention to the number of microphones and features such as ENC, but do not expect completely interference-free conversations in strong winds or heavy traffic. Switch off ANC when you need to continue hearing traffic or other surrounding sounds clearly.
