Choosing wireless earbuds: how to find a model that suits the way you use them

Wireless earbuds are handy for listening to music, making calls, travelling, working and exercising. However, it is easy to pay too much for features you rarely use. What is more, a long list of Bluetooth versions, microphones and battery claims does not always tell you much about everyday comfort.

When comparing models, pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • Battery life without context: manufacturers often state the total playtime including the charging case. The usage time per charge may be much lower, especially with ANC enabled.
  • Noise cancellation as a marketing term: active noise cancellation does not work in the same way for every type of sound. Low, constant tones are generally processed differently from voices or sudden noises.
  • A poor fit: even good true wireless earbuds sound less enjoyable if they do not seal properly or move around while walking or exercising.

Which specifications really matter?

1. Fit, comfort and protection

In-ear earbuds partially seal the ear canal. This can provide stronger bass and reduce background noise, but not everyone finds it comfortable. Check whether several ear tip sizes are included. According to the product description, the Apple AirPods Pro 3 come with five sizes of silicone ear tips. This makes it easier to adjust the fit than with models offering just one fixed size.

For exercise, sports earbuds with an ear hook or open-ear design are worth considering. An open-ear model leaves the ear canal open, allowing you to remain more aware of your surroundings. According to the product information, the sanag G6S has an open-ear ear hook, weighs approximately 5.6 grams per earbud and has an IPX4 rating.

Pay attention to the difference between water resistance and waterproofing. An IPX4 or IPX5 rating indicates protection against splashes or sweat under certain conditions. It does not mean that the earbuds are suitable for submersion or swimming.

2. ANC, transparency mode and microphones

ANC earbuds use microphones and electronics to reduce background noise. This can be useful on the train, in the office or during a flight. A transparency mode does the opposite by allowing surrounding sounds through. This is helpful when you are having a conversation or need to hear what is happening around you.

Also check how many microphones are used and whether the product features noise reduction for calls. This is not a guarantee of perfect call quality: wind, traffic noise, microphone placement and the phone being used all play a part. Claims should therefore be treated with caution. According to Soundcore’s own product information, the Liberty 4 Pro has six microphones. The product information for the JBL Wave Buds 2 lists four microphones.

3. Battery, Bluetooth and charging

Always compare these three values:

  1. Playtime per earbud
  2. Total playtime with the charging case
  3. Playtime with ANC enabled

According to the product description, the JBL Wave Buds 2 offer up to 40 hours of total playback when ANC is switched off, with up to 10 hours per charge. The Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro offers up to 10 hours of continuous playback. The Apple AirPods 4 with ANC offer up to 5 hours of music on a full charge and more than 30 hours with the case. Always check the current product specifications at checkout, as usage time depends on volume, codecs, calls and features.

Bluetooth 5.3 or Bluetooth 5.4 can provide modern connectivity options and efficient power consumption, but the version number alone does not determine sound quality. Also look for multipoint or multi-device connectivity if you often switch between a phone, laptop and tablet.

A USB-C charging port is convenient because the same cable is often used for other devices too. Some models also support wireless charging. Check whether a power adapter is included; several earbuds come with just a cable in the box.

Frequently asked questions about wireless earbuds

How do I connect wireless Bluetooth earbuds to my phone?

First, charge the earbuds and charging case. Open the case, switch on Bluetooth on your phone and select the product name from the list of available devices. With Apple AirPods, a pairing window usually appears when you hold the case near an iPhone. For Android and other devices, use the Bluetooth settings. If it does not work, remove the old pairing and start the pairing process again.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Battery capacity decreases over time. Practical service life depends on charging cycles, heat, usage time and storage. Keep the earbuds in their case, charge them with a suitable USB-C cable and do not leave them in direct sunlight for extended periods. A model with long battery life reduces the number of times you need to charge it, but it cannot prevent wear and tear completely.

Are earbuds with noise cancellation suitable for everyone?

ANC earbuds are particularly useful for constant background noise, such as on a train or aeroplane. When cycling, crossing the road or in other situations where it is important to hear your surroundings, use transparency mode or switch ANC off. Also check that the fit remains comfortable and listen at a moderate volume. This makes everyday use more practical and safer.
