Choosing wireless earbuds: how to avoid a bad buy

Wireless earbuds are handy for music, podcasts, calls, travel, work and exercise. However, a long list of features does not automatically mean that a model will suit your everyday use. The difference often lies in details such as fit, battery life, water resistance and compatibility with your phone.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I therefore focus mainly on verifiable specifications. I do not simply take brands’ marketing claims at face value. Below, you can read which features matter and which wireless earbuds suit different user profiles.

Three common pitfalls when choosing wireless earbuds

1. A high battery life does not always apply under the same conditions

Manufacturers often state the maximum playback time. This can vary when ANC, a high volume, phone calls or a Bluetooth codec is active. Therefore, check whether the stated battery life applies to each earbud or includes the charging case.

For example, a model offering 10 hours of playback per charge may be more practical for long working days than a model offering 5 hours, even if both have a charging case. Also check the total usage time with the case and whether fast charging is available.

2. Noise cancelling cannot solve poor fit

Earbuds with noise cancelling use microphones and electronics to reduce background noise. However, performance also depends on how well the earbuds seal. The wrong size of silicone ear tips can result in less comfort and a less consistent listening experience.

Pay attention to the number of ear tips included, the shape of the housing and whether the model is suitable for extended wear. A transparency mode can be useful in the office or on public transport, but do not use noise cancelling in situations where you need to hear traffic or warning sounds.

3. An IP rating does not mean you can swim with them

The IP code indicates the conditions against which a product has been tested. IPX4, for example, indicates splash resistance; IP54 also provides limited protection against dust. IP57 means a higher level of protection, but always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Splash resistance is not the same as being suitable for immersion, swimming or prolonged exposure to rain. Also check whether the charging case has the same rating as the earbuds.

Important specifications to compare

Fit and wearing comfort

True wireless earbuds have no cable connecting the two earbuds. This makes them compact, but a good fit is even more important. Look out for:

  • multiple sizes of silicone ear tips;
  • stability wings or an ergonomic shape for exercise;
  • the weight of each earbud;
  • controls operated by touch, pressing or a stem;
  • the option to use one earbud independently.

An open-ear model allows more ambient sound through, but provides less isolation. This can be useful when walking, while traditional wireless in-ear headphones are often more suitable for travelling or a noisy workplace.

Battery and charging case

Check both the playback time per charge and the total playback time with the earbuds and charging case. A USB-C connection is practical because the same cable is often used for a phone or laptop as well. Some models also support wireless charging.

Pay attention to the difference between music playback and calls. Talk time is generally lower. Features such as ANC and spatial audio can also affect battery life.

Connection, microphone and compatibility

Bluetooth 5.3 or Bluetooth 6.1 says something about the connection technology used, but it does not, on its own, indicate how stable the connection will be in your surroundings. In particular, check:

  • support for iOS, Android, Windows or multiple systems;
  • multipoint, which allows you to connect two devices;
  • support for a companion app;
  • the number of microphones;
  • features such as quick pairing or automatic switching.

Earbuds with a microphone are suitable for calls, online meetings and voice assistants. The number of microphones is a verifiable specification, but the overall call experience also depends on wind, network connection and your surroundings.

Taking brand claims into account

According to Soundcore’s own research, certain Liberty models are promoted with powerful noise cancellation, adaptive performance or AI-assisted call quality. Treat such percentages and descriptions as brand claims, and focus on comparing the underlying specifications: number of microphones, ANC modes, battery life, Bluetooth version and IP rating.

The same applies to features such as spatial audio, 360 Audio and high-resolution audio. Their practical value depends on the phone, app, music source and personal preference.

Frequently asked questions about wireless earbuds

How do I connect Bluetooth earbuds to my phone?

First, charge the earbuds and the case. Then open your phone’s Bluetooth settings, put the earbuds into pairing mode and select the product name. With Apple AirPods, a pop-up often appears when you open the case near an Apple device. For Samsung Galaxy Buds, you can use the Galaxy Wearable app if needed.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Battery capacity usually declines gradually due to charging cycles and use. Lifespan depends on charging habits, heat, moisture and daily volume levels. Store the earbuds in the case, keep the charging contacts clean and do not leave a lithium battery in extreme heat for prolonged periods.

Are ANC earbuds suitable for exercise?

That depends on the IP rating, fit and exercise environment. IPX4 or IPX5 may be suitable for sweat and light splashes according to the product specifications, but always check the manual. Do not use noise cancelling when you need to hear traffic or other warning signals.
