Choosing wireless earbuds: what to look for before you buy

Wireless earbuds are handy for commuting, making calls, listening to music, exercising and working. However, a model that looks appealing on paper may disappoint in practice. Short battery life, an uncomfortable fit or a microphone that does not sufficiently suppress background noise are often only noticed after purchase.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I therefore focus mainly on verifiable features: connectivity, battery life, microphones, protection against dust and splashes, wearing style and connection type. Marketing terms are useful as a first indication, but they do not always tell you how well a model will suit the way you use it.

Three common pitfalls when choosing Bluetooth earbuds

1. Long battery life without clear conditions

Manufacturers often state the maximum playback time. This figure may depend on the volume, the codec used, active noise cancellation and charging via the case. For example, the JBL Wave Buds 2 is advertised with up to 40 hours of total playback time with noise cancellation switched off. The stated playback time of the earbuds themselves is up to 8 hours.

So do not compare only the biggest number. Also check:

  • playback time per charge;
  • the extra capacity provided by the charging case;
  • whether noise cancellation affects battery life;
  • charging time and any fast-charging function.

2. Confusing noise cancellation with complete silence

Earbuds with noise cancellation use microphones and electronics to reduce background noise. The result varies depending on the surroundings, fit and type of sound. Low, constant sounds such as train engines are generally handled differently from voices or sudden noises.

According to the product information, the JBL Wave Buds 2 features Active Noise Cancelling and Smart Ambient. The HONOR Earbuds A Pro is stated in the product description to offer active noise cancellation of up to 49 dB. Such figures come from information provided by the brand or manufacturer and do not guarantee the same experience in every situation.

3. Overlooking a comfortable fit

Even good true wireless earbuds can feel uncomfortable if their shape does not suit your ears. A fit that is too loose can also affect sound isolation and bass response. Pay attention to the sizes of the ear tips supplied, the weight and the wearing style.

For exercise, a neckband, ear hook or secure fit may be more practical than completely loose earbuds. For long working sessions, lightweight in-ear or on-ear models are often more comfortable than a heavier design.

Which specifications really matter?

Bluetooth version and connectivity

Bluetooth 5.3 or Bluetooth 5.4 mainly tells you which standard is used; it does not automatically indicate sound quality. Also check whether the model supports multipoint, allowing you to switch between, for example, a laptop and smartphone.

According to the product specifications, the Anker P30i features Bluetooth 5.4, a charging case and touch controls. According to the manufacturer, the JBL Wave Buds 2 offers a multipoint connection for two devices. This is useful when you listen to music while working and want to take calls on your smartphone.

Microphones for calls

An earbud with a microphone is not automatically suitable for clear conversations at a busy station. The number and positioning of the microphones, as well as noise-reduction software, all play a part. Also check whether the model has a mute function or physical control button.

According to the product information, the Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro has six microphones and a stated playback time of up to 10 hours. The Anker P30i has four microphones and up to 10 hours of playback time. These specifications provide a useful indication, but speech clarity still depends on wind, traffic and the phone connection.

IP rating and everyday use

The IP code indicates the extent to which a device is protected against dust and water. IP54 includes protection against dust particles and splashes under certain test conditions. IPX5 refers to protection against water jets, but not immersion.

An IP rating does not make a model suitable for swimming. Always check the product information and dry your earbuds after contact with rain or sweat. The Anker P30i has an IP54 rating; the Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro has IPX5 according to the listed specifications.

USB-C or a wired connection

Earbuds with USB-C are convenient if you already use a USB-C cable for your phone, tablet and laptop. However, be aware of the difference between:

  • wireless earbuds with a USB-C case: the earbuds connect via Bluetooth, while the case charges via USB-C;
  • wired earbuds with USB-C: these work without Bluetooth and do not need their own battery;
  • 3.5mm earbuds: only suitable for devices with a compatible headphone socket or adapter.

The Samsung EO-IC100 is a wired in-ear headset with USB-C, a microphone and controls on the cable. The Sony IER-EX15C also works via a wired USB-C connection and has a built-in microphone and remote control. This can be a straightforward choice for users who do not want to charge or pair their earbuds.

Frequently asked questions about wireless earbuds

How do I connect wireless earbuds to my phone?

First, charge the earbuds and charging case. Then open the Bluetooth settings on your smartphone, put the earbuds into pairing mode and select the product name. The next time you connect, this will usually happen automatically. If it does not work, remove the previous Bluetooth pairing and try again.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Their lifespan depends on battery wear, charging habits, moisture, drops and cleaning. Keep the earbuds in their case, use a suitable USB-C cable and avoid prolonged exposure to heat or moisture. A wired model such as the Samsung EO-IC100 has no built-in battery in the earbuds, so it does not need to be charged.

What are the running costs of wireless earbuds?

Apart from the purchase price, there are usually few ongoing costs. You use electricity to charge the case and may need an app for settings, but a subscription is generally not required. Do bear in mind the possible need to replace ear tips, a cable or, eventually, the battery. Also check whether your phone requires USB-C, Bluetooth or possibly an adapter.
