Choosing wireless Bluetooth headphones: specifications and pitfalls to look out for

A wireless Bluetooth headset may seem easy to choose, until you have to decide between an over-ear model, Bluetooth earbuds, wireless earphones or an open-ear design. A low price says little about comfort, call quality or battery life. Terms such as “noise cancelling”, “waterproof” and “long battery life” also require closer inspection.

With this practical guide, you can focus on the features that really make a difference in the Netherlands for work, travel, cycling, running and everyday listening.

Three common pitfalls with wireless headphones

1. Battery life is not always measured in the same way

A manufacturer may measure playback time at a low volume, with ANC switched off and a fully charged charging case. As a result, “up to 55 hours” does not always mean 55 hours of listening in real-world use. Check whether the stated time applies to the earbuds alone or to the combination of the earbuds and case.

For headphones with long battery life, these details are also relevant:

  • playback time with and without active noise cancellation;
  • fast-charging time and the additional listening time afterwards;
  • charging type, such as USB-C or a magnetic charging cable;
  • whether the headphones can also be used with a wired connection.

2. Noise cancelling is no guarantee of silence

ANC, or active noise cancellation, works mainly against constant low-frequency sounds, such as the hum of a train or aeroplane. Voices, cycling traffic and sudden noises may still be audible. According to Baseus’s own information, the EH10 NC can reduce background noise by up to 45 dB; this is a product specification from the brand, not a guarantee of a completely silent environment.

Also pay attention to the difference between:

  • passive sound isolation provided by ear cushions or silicone ear tips;
  • ANC, which uses microphones to electronically counteract ambient noise;
  • transparency mode, which keeps ambient sound audible.

A noise-cancelling headset is useful when travelling or working with concentration. For cycling and running, an open-ear headset may feel safer because you can continue to hear traffic more clearly. Always keep the volume moderate and take extra care in traffic.

3. “Waterproof” is interpreted too broadly

An IPX5 or IP55 rating does not automatically mean that a product is suitable for submersion. According to the product description, the MINISO MS106 is described as IPX5 water-resistant for rain and sweat. According to its safety information, the Baseus Bowie MC1 is specifically not described as waterproof.

Therefore, check:

  • the exact IP rating;
  • whether the protection applies to both the earbuds and the charging case;
  • whether swimming is explicitly mentioned;
  • whether the charging port must be dry before charging.

Even with models that have a swimming mode, such as the Verbex BL-09, you should follow the instructions for use. According to the product information, swimming may require use of the internal MP3 mode, and the charging port must be completely dry before charging.

Which specifications really matter?

Wearing style and fit

Over-ear headphones cover the ear and usually provide more passive isolation. An on-ear model, such as the Sony WH-CH520, rests on the ear and is compact. Bluetooth earbuds are lightweight and easy to carry, but the fit varies considerably from one ear to another.

For sport, ear hooks, a neckband or an open-ear clip are practical options. A bone-conduction headset does not sit inside the ear canal. With this type, it is normal for ambient sound to remain audible. Check that the model stays securely in place during the activities you do.

Microphone and call quality

If you make calls regularly, do not just look at the number of microphones. The following are also important:

  • microphone noise cancellation;
  • wind filtering;
  • how clearly you can be heard outdoors;
  • multipoint connectivity for your phone and laptop;
  • control via buttons or touch controls.

A wireless headset with a microphone is particularly practical for working from home and online meetings. Product claims about “AI-clear calls” come from the brand, so treat them as a described feature rather than a guaranteed result.

Bluetooth, codecs and connectivity

Bluetooth 5.3, 5.4 or 6.0 mainly indicates the connection standard used. Your actual experience also depends on your phone, laptop, distance and obstacles. A range of around 10 metres is stated for several models, but walls and other wireless signals can reduce this.

For compatibility, SBC and AAC are commonly used codecs. According to Baseus’s product description, LDAC can transmit more audio data, but your playback device must support this codec too.

Frequently asked questions about wireless Bluetooth headphones

How do I connect Bluetooth earbuds to my phone?

Open the Bluetooth settings on your phone, charge the earbuds sufficiently and put them into pairing mode. Select the product name from the list. If the connection does not work, remove an earlier pairing and try again. With multipoint models, you usually need to add the second phone or laptop separately using the relevant app or manual.

How long do wireless headphones last?

Battery life depends on battery capacity, charging habits and volume. Total battery life decreases over time. Keep the headphones dry, avoid extreme heat and use a suitable USB-C charger. Do not charge a lithium battery if the casing is damaged, swollen or unusually hot.

Are ANC earbuds suitable for cycling?

ANC earbuds can reduce ambient sound, making you less aware of traffic. For cycling, an open-ear headset or bone-conduction model is often the more sensible choice if you want to continue hearing your surroundings. Keep your attention on the traffic and do not use headphones if this could compromise your safety or prevent you from meeting your legal obligations.
