Choosing wireless Bluetooth headphones: how to avoid a disappointing purchase

A wireless Bluetooth headset may seem easy to choose at first glance. However, exaggerated battery claims, vague terms such as “AI noise reduction” and unclear compatibility can all lead to disappointment. A pair of headphones that is comfortable on a train journey, for example, may not be suitable for running or gaming.

So do not focus only on the brand, colour or discount. Pay particular attention to the connection, fit, battery life, water resistance and the device you want to use the headphones with.

Common pitfalls when buying Bluetooth headphones

1. The claimed battery life is not always the actual usage time

Manufacturers often state the maximum playback time under specific conditions. An advertised long battery life may, for example, apply with active noise cancellation, lighting and other features switched off, and at a moderate volume. With ANC headphones, actual usage time may therefore be lower when ANC is continuously active.

So check:

  • the battery life with and without ANC;
  • the charging time and connection type, preferably USB-C;
  • whether fast charging is specified in minutes of use per charge;
  • whether the charging case has been included in the stated battery life for wireless earbuds.

2. “Noise cancelling” can mean different things

Sound isolation is created by the ear cushions or the seal in your ear. Active Noise Cancelling, usually abbreviated to ANC, uses microphones and electronics to reduce surrounding noise. These are not the same features.

According to Baseus’s own product information, the EH10 NC can offer up to -45 dB of active noise isolation. This is a brand specification under certain conditions, not a guarantee that every sound will disappear completely. With an inexpensive Bluetooth headset, “noise reduction” may also refer only to the microphone during phone calls.

3. Bluetooth does not automatically mean compatibility with every device

A Bluetooth headset will generally work with smartphones, tablets and laptops. A PlayStation 5 headset is different. The PS5 does not support every Bluetooth audio connection directly. Some gaming headsets therefore use a 2.4GHz USB dongle or a cable.

Before buying, check:

  • whether a USB transmitter is included;
  • whether wireless mode and Bluetooth mode work with your console;
  • whether the microphone, chat audio and game audio are supported simultaneously;
  • whether the headset can also be used with a cable.

Key specifications explained

Bluetooth version and connection

Bluetooth 5.0, 5.3, 5.4 or 6.0 mainly indicates the generation of the connection. Your actual experience also depends on the codec, antenna, distance and connected device. For everyday use, a stable connection and a range of around 10 metres in an open space are often more important than simply choosing the highest version number.

A multipoint connection is useful when you want to connect a phone and laptop at the same time. The Sony WH-CH520 lists this feature in its product information, making it easier to switch between devices.

Fit, weight and wearing style

Choose the design based on how you plan to use the headphones:

  • On-ear: compact and lightweight, but often lets in more surrounding noise.
  • Over-ear: larger ear cups with greater isolation; suitable for travelling and extended listening.
  • Wireless earbuds: small and easy to carry, but the fit varies from ear to ear.
  • Sports headphones: look for a secure fit and sweat resistance.
  • Bone conduction headphones: an open design that leaves the ears less enclosed. Pay particular attention to the water rating and swimming mode.

Weight, pressure on your ears and the shape of the headband all determine whether headphones remain comfortable. Soft ear cushions are useful, but may feel less comfortable in warm weather.

Water resistance and use during sport

An IPX5 rating does not mean that a product is suitable for use underwater. IPX5 refers to protection against water jets, whereas swimming involves much greater exposure. Therefore, only use waterproof headphones in accordance with the stated instructions.

The Verbex BL-09 product information mentions a swimming mode and bone-conduction design. According to the product description, you must select the correct MP3 or internal mode when swimming, and the charging port must be completely dry before charging. After use in chlorinated or salt water, rinse the product with clean water if instructed to do so in the manual.

Frequently asked questions about wireless Bluetooth headphones

How do I connect wireless Bluetooth headphones to my phone?

Charge the headphones first, switch them on and activate Bluetooth on your phone. Select the product name from the list of available devices. With wireless earbuds, pairing often starts automatically when you open the case. If it does not work, remove an old pairing and start the pairing process again according to the manual.

How long do wireless headphones last?

This depends on battery usage, charging frequency, moisture, temperature and volume. A battery with a long stated playback time still needs to be charged regularly. Keep the headphones dry, charge them with a suitable cable and do not use a product with a swollen battery, leakage or unusual heat.

Are ANC headphones suitable for travelling?

ANC headphones can be useful on trains, aeroplanes or in the office, as active noise cancellation can reduce certain constant background sounds. The effect varies depending on your surroundings and the fit. Also check the battery life with ANC switched on, and make sure you can hear surrounding sounds whenever this is necessary while travelling or in traffic.
