Choosing wireless Bluetooth headphones: how to avoid a poor purchase

A wireless Bluetooth headset may seem suitable at first glance. However, differences in fit, battery life and connectivity can become noticeable when you travel, exercise, make calls or game every day. Marketing terms such as “AI”, “3D sound” and “noise cancelling” also do not always tell you how a product will perform in your situation.

That is why you should pay particular attention to the following pitfalls before making a purchase.

Three common pitfalls with wireless audio

1. Long battery life does not always apply to every mode

Manufacturers often state the maximum playback time under specific conditions. Noise cancelling, RGB lighting, a wireless 2.4GHz connection and high volume can reduce battery life. Check whether the stated time applies to Bluetooth, gaming or use with active noise cancellation.

Headphones with long battery life are useful for train journeys and working days, but also look at the charging time, connection type and whether fast charging is supported.

2. “Noise cancelling” can refer to different functions

There is a difference between:

  • Passive noise isolation: ear cushions or a good seal partially block out surrounding noise.
  • Active noise cancellation (ANC): microphones measure ambient noise and the headphones attempt to reduce it electronically.
  • Noise reduction for calls: microphones filter out surrounding noise during phone calls.

According to manufacturers’ own product information, certain models can reduce a specific amount of noise. Treat such figures as manufacturer product specifications, not as a guarantee of the same experience in every environment. ANC may feel different on a busy train than in an office.

3. Water-resistant does not mean suitable for swimming

An IPX5 or IP55 rating refers to resistance to water jets or splashes under specific test conditions. It does not automatically mean that you can submerge the earbuds. For swimming, you need a model whose manufacturer explicitly mentions a swimming or MP3 mode. Also check that the charging port is dry before you start charging.

Which specifications should you check?

Fit: over-ear, on-ear, in-ear or open-ear

Over-ear headphones surround the ear and can be comfortable during long listening sessions. However, this design takes up more space. An on-ear model, such as the Sony WH-CH520, rests on the ear and weighs 147 grams according to the product information.

In-ear earbuds and wireless earbuds are compact for commuting. Choosing the right size of silicone ear tip is important for comfort and a secure fit. For running or cycling, an ear hook or open design may be more practical.

Bone-conduction headphones or an open-ear model leave the ear canal largely unobstructed. According to the product description, the Verbex K08 and BL-09 use an open, ear-hook-style design. This means you can remain more aware of surrounding sounds, but the listening experience and bass reproduction may differ from those of closed earbuds.

Connectivity and use with multiple devices

Bluetooth 5.3 or Bluetooth 5.4 mainly indicates the connection standard being used; it is not a direct guarantee of greater range or better sound quality. Check whether the product supports multipoint if you want to switch quickly between, for example, a laptop and smartphone.

For gaming, Bluetooth is not always the most suitable connection. A gaming headset with a 2.4GHz dongle may offer lower latency. However, check that the dongle is compatible with your PS5, PS4, PC or laptop. For the ONIKUMA GT806, the product information states that Bluetooth does not work directly with PS4 or PS5; the 2.4GHz mode is required for this.

Microphone, codecs and battery

If you make a lot of calls, do not just look for an “AI microphone”. Also consider the number of microphones, their placement and the supported connection mode. According to MINISO’s own product information, the MS106 has six microphones for call noise reduction. This is a verifiable product specification, but speech clarity also depends on wind, distance and the phone being used.

When it comes to codecs, look out for terms such as AAC, SBC and LDAC. Your smartphone and streaming service must support the codec too. A codec alone therefore does not determine the overall sound quality.

Frequently asked questions about wireless Bluetooth headphones

How do I connect wireless headphones to my smartphone?

First, charge the headphones and put them into pairing mode. Then open the Bluetooth settings on your smartphone and select the product name. With some models, quick pairing only works with certain Android or Apple devices. If the connection does not work, remove an old pairing and try again.

How long do wireless headphones last?

Battery capacity decreases over time. Battery life depends on volume, codec, ANC, call mode and temperature. Keep the headphones dry, avoid extreme heat and use the supplied or a suitable USB-C charger. A model with replaceable ear cushions or a sturdy storage case may also be more practical for everyday use.

Are Bluetooth earbuds suitable for sports?

That depends on the fit and water resistance. For sports earbuds, choose a model with an ear hook, neckband or secure wingtip if you move around a lot. Check the exact IP rating and only use an open-design model when you want to remain aware of surrounding sounds. No rating replaces the manufacturer’s usage warnings.
