Choosing wireless Bluetooth earbuds: look out for these specifications and pitfalls

Wireless Bluetooth earbuds are handy for listening to music and podcasts, making hands-free calls, and staying connected while working, studying, travelling or exercising. However, a product page can sometimes promise more than the specifications actually support. For example, a long battery life does not always indicate how many hours the earbuds themselves will play for. And a mention of “noise cancelling” does not automatically tell you how well calls or ambient sound are handled.

Use these practical checks to compare true wireless earbuds, TWS earbuds and open-ear models based on features that make a real difference in everyday use.

Three pitfalls to watch out for when buying wireless Bluetooth earbuds

1. A high total battery life is not the same as a long listening time

Brands and sellers often quote the battery life of the earbuds plus the charging case. This figure can therefore be considerably higher than the playback time per charge. Always check both values:

  • playback time of the earbuds themselves;
  • total playback time with the charging case;
  • charging time and any fast-charging function;
  • the effect of features such as noise cancelling on battery life.

For example, the MINISO MS106 states up to 55 hours of total battery life, while the HTC NE40 provides around 3.5 hours per charge according to the product specifications, and up to 24 hours with the case. These represent different usage scenarios, even though both are offered as Bluetooth 6.0 earbuds.

2. “Water-resistant” does not mean suitable for swimming

An IP rating consists of two digits. The first indicates protection against solid particles, while the second refers to water. IPX4 is intended to protect against splashes and sweat, whereas IPX5 indicates protection against water jets. Neither rating automatically means that you can submerge the earbuds.

For swimming, you need a product whose manufacturer states a suitable protection rating and method of use. The Verbex BL-09 has a swimming mode and an IP68 rating in its product description. Always follow the instructions, dry the charging contacts and do not charge a wet device immediately.

3. Noise cancelling and AI features do not guarantee clear calls

“AI”, “ENC” and “noise cancelling” refer to technologies that can process sound, but their practical performance depends on the microphones, software, fit and surroundings. According to the product description, the MINISO MS106 has six microphones for reducing background noise during calls, and the brand states adaptive noise cancellation of up to -50 dB. This is a claim from the brand’s product information, not a general guarantee for every call.

If you are mainly looking for earbuds for making calls, also consider the number and positioning of the microphones, as well as user feedback. An open-ear model may allow you to hear ambient sound more clearly, but it will generally also let more sound travel in and out.

Which specifications should you check?

Fit: in-ear, clip-on or open-ear

A good fit prevents you from having to keep readjusting your earbuds. In-ear TWS earbuds partially seal the ear canal, which can provide a more direct listening experience. Check whether different sizes of ear tips are included.

Open-ear earbuds rest on or around the ear. They are worth considering for walking, running and commuting when you want to remain aware of traffic and other ambient sounds. A clip-on design or ear hook can provide additional stability during movement. However, bear in mind that open-ear does not mean that music cannot be heard outside the earbuds.

Bluetooth version and connection

Bluetooth 5.3, Bluetooth 5.4 and Bluetooth 6.0 provide information about the connection standard, but they do not determine sound quality on their own. Also check:

  • range, for example 10 metres under ideal conditions;
  • compatibility with phones, tablets and computers;
  • multipoint or dual-device connection;
  • latency when watching videos or gaming;
  • codec support, if your phone uses it.

The Baseus Eli Sport 2 lists Bluetooth 6.0, a range of 10 metres and support for SBC, AAC and LDAC. The Soundcore Aeroclip and AeroFit 2 use Bluetooth 5.4. A newer version number is therefore not automatically the right choice; compatibility and features matter too.

Battery, microphone and moisture protection

For everyday use, earbuds with long battery life are especially practical if you are often out and about or do not want to carry the charging case everywhere. For exercise, weight, fit and the IP rating are just as important.

An IPX4 model, such as the TALIX G1 and sanag G6S, is suitable for sweat and light rain according to the product descriptions. For more demanding use, check whether the manufacturer specifically mentions swimming, heavy rain or prolonged exposure to moisture. Do not use a headset while cycling or in situations where you cannot hear traffic properly; follow local road rules and safety instructions.

Frequently asked questions about wireless Bluetooth earbuds

How do I connect wireless earbuds to my phone?

First, charge the earbuds and the charging case. Open the case or press and hold the pairing button until the indicator flashes. Then go to Settings > Bluetooth on your phone and select the product name. If the connection does not work, remove the old Bluetooth profile and try again. For translation features or multipoint connections, always refer to the included instructions.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Their lifespan depends on charging cycles, heat, moisture, volume and maintenance. Keep them in the charging case, keep the contact points dry and do not charge them in a damp environment. A swollen or damaged battery is a reason to stop using the product immediately.

Are cheap TWS earbuds suitable for everyday calls?

They can be, but pay particular attention to the number and positioning of the microphones, as well as the information about noise reduction. A basic model may be sufficient in a quiet working environment. On a busy train or in the street, multiple microphones and a stable fit are more useful than a Bluetooth version number alone. Do not use earbuds while cycling or driving when you need to hear ambient sound.
