Choosing a UV-protection umbrella: a practical guide to sun, rain and wind

A UV-protection umbrella can come in handy on a sunny bike ride, during a walk or on your way to work. In the Netherlands, though, you need more than just shade: sudden showers, gusts of wind and limited space in your bag all matter too. An umbrella that’s large enough for the rain but too heavy for everyday use can soon end up being left at home.

Manufacturers’ product descriptions also often contain bold claims. It’s therefore worth checking verifiable specifications such as canopy material, dimensions, weight, folded size and construction.

Three common pitfalls when choosing a sun umbrella

1. A high UV claim without context

A rating such as UPF 50+ tells you about the stated protection rating of the canopy, but it doesn’t automatically reflect the overall experience of using the umbrella. The sun’s position, gaps at the sides and the way you hold the umbrella all affect the shade it provides. So check the diameter of the open canopy too, and whether the umbrella is intended for personal protection or wider coverage.

Claims such as “more than 99.9% UV blocking” come from the brand’s product information. Treat them as manufacturer claims: the model is stated to offer this level of protection. Don’t regard this as a medical claim or as a substitute for other sun-protection measures.

2. A compact umbrella that’s too small in practice

A five-section umbrella will often fit easily into a handbag or rucksack. The trade-off can be a smaller open diameter. A 35-inch canopy may be enough for one person, but in windy rain you’ll also want room for a bag or your shoulder.

So pay attention to three measurements:

  • Open diameter: determines how much shade and rain protection you get.
  • Folded length and width: important for fitting into a coat pocket, handbag or bike bag.
  • Weight: a model weighing around 170 grams is easier to carry every day than one weighing around 370 grams.

3. Confusing “wind-resistant” with stormproof

According to the product description, a fibreglass and aluminium frame can help improve stability. That doesn’t mean the umbrella is suitable for every wind speed. In strong winds, it’s still wise to close the umbrella and find shelter.

Check the number of ribs, the type of shaft and any wind rating. For example, the Beneunder BM397 is stated by the manufacturer to have level 5 wind resistance. Before buying, check exactly what this rating means; a marketing rating is not the same as an independent Dutch standard.

Important specifications for a UV-protection umbrella

Canopy and coating

A black coating on the inside or outside can reduce the amount of light that passes through and provide extra shade. The Beneunder models mentioned here feature L.R.C Black Coating. The manufacturer links this coating to heat and UV protection. This should be understood as a brand claim, not a universally guaranteed result.

A water-repellent finish is useful in changeable weather. Bear in mind, though, that water-repellent doesn’t automatically mean fully waterproof in prolonged rain. After use, let a water-repellent umbrella dry completely before putting it away.

UPF and UV information

A UPF 50+ umbrella is worth considering if you’re mainly looking for a sun umbrella. Compare product information carefully. Some models state UPF 50+, while others mention only a coating or UV blocking. A higher figure in a product description isn’t necessarily comparable with a formal certification.

For everyday use in the Netherlands, canopy coverage, height and carrying comfort also matter. A larger canopy provides more shade, but catches more wind too.

Folding mechanism and frame

A five-section model is generally more compact than a three-section one. The trade-off is often a smaller canopy or a more delicate mechanism. Fibreglass ribs can flex, while aluminium helps keep the weight down. Check the handle, fastening strap and case too.

A sun and rain umbrella needs to dry properly after use in the rain. Shake off excess water, leave the umbrella open to dry, and only put it away once it’s dry. This helps prevent musty smells and damage to the materials.

Frequently asked questions about UV-protection umbrellas

Is a UV-protection umbrella also suitable for rain?

That depends on the canopy and the product description. Models with a coating and water-repellent finish are designed for use in both sun and rain, but water-repellent doesn’t mean fully waterproof. Let the umbrella dry completely after a shower.

How long does a UV-protection umbrella last?

Its lifespan depends on wind exposure, how often you use it, how it’s folded and how well it’s maintained. Don’t force the umbrella open in strong winds, clean it with a damp cloth and store it dry. According to the product information, an aluminium and fibreglass frame can help with durability, but normal wear and tear is still possible.

Is a folding sun umbrella practical for everyday use?

Yes, as long as its weight and folded size suit your bag. Be sure to check the open diameter too. A very compact umbrella takes up little space, but generally offers less coverage than a model with a canopy of around 39 inches.
