A teppanyaki grill makes cooking together easy: meat, fish, vegetables, eggs and pancakes go straight onto the hotplate. However, not every electric table grill is suitable for every kitchen or group. A compact model may not offer enough space during a dinner party, while a large teppanyaki hotplate can be awkward for everyday use by two people.
Pay particular attention to three common pitfalls:
Choose the size based on how you cook. For a household of one or two people, a cooking surface of around 28 × 20 cm is easy to manage. If several people are cooking at the same time, a long hotplate is more practical.
As a general guide, consider:
Leave enough space around the grill for plates, cutlery and cables. A large cooking surface is only practical if you can position it securely on the table.
Power is measured in watts. Compact models offering 1,000 to 1,360 watts are suitable for smaller quantities. Models rated at 1,800 to 2,400 watts generally provide more reserve power for larger portions, but they also use more electricity when heating at a high setting.
More important than wattage alone is the control system. An electric teppanyaki grill with five heat settings gives you greater control over different ingredients. Use a higher setting for searing and a lower setting for vegetables, eggs or pancakes. On some models, an indicator light shows when the appliance is heating or has reached temperature.
For use in the Netherlands, check that the appliance is suitable for 220–240 volts, an earthed socket and the supplied plug. Only use an extension lead if it is suitable for the specified power rating.
A smooth teppanyaki hotplate is useful for fish, eggs, vegetables and marinated ingredients. A ribbed section gives meat and vegetables a grilled finish. Some models combine both zones, for example two-thirds smooth and one-third ribbed.
Also check:
A PFAS-free teppanyaki grill is a product specification, not a general guarantee of any particular cooking or health effect. With any non-stick coating, use wooden, silicone or nylon spatulas and avoid metal forks and knives. Allow the hotplate to cool completely before cleaning it. Never immerse an electrical base, thermostat or cable in water.

Place an indoor grill plate on a flat, heat-resistant surface with plenty of ventilation space. Do not position the appliance next to curtains, paper or other flammable materials. An outdoor grill plate must not be used in the rain. Outdoors, only use a suitable, protected socket with residual-current protection.
Never leave a hotplate unattended, and keep children and pets at a safe distance. Unplug the appliance before removing the thermostat, moving the appliance or starting to clean it.
This depends on the power rating and how long it is used. A 2,000-watt model theoretically uses 2 kWh when heating continuously at maximum power for one hour. In practice, the thermostat regularly reduces the power. Actual consumption is therefore often lower, but it varies by model and temperature setting.
According to their product information, some models are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, such as the Fritel GT 1075 and GT 1375. Always place the grill somewhere dry and stable, protect the plug from moisture and do not use the appliance in the rain. A model specified for indoor table use only should not be used outdoors.
Its lifespan depends on the temperature, cleaning routine and utensils used. Avoid metal spatulas, abrasive sponges and sudden changes in temperature. Allow the hotplate to cool and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. This helps limit wear, although a fixed lifespan cannot be guaranteed.
