Buying T-shirts: how to choose the right fit, fabric and style

A T-shirt may seem like a straightforward purchase, but differences in size, material and fit aren’t always obvious when you’re shopping online. A shirt may look loose in the product photo, while the actual fit is slim. Terms such as “soft fabric”, “sports material” or “premium cotton” only tell you so much, so check the product specifications.

This practical guide helps you compare men’s T-shirts, baby T-shirts, boys’ T-shirts, cotton T-shirts and sports T-shirts by the things that really matter.

Common pitfalls when buying T-shirts

1. Going by the size letter alone

A size M won’t be the same in every brand. A slim-fit T-shirt from Calvin Klein may fit differently from a regular-fit T-shirt by Tommy Hilfiger or PUMA. Always check:

  • the stated fit: slim fit, regular fit or loose fit;
  • the chest width or body measurements in centimetres;
  • the size guide for that particular brand;
  • whether the product information recommends choosing a size up.

For example, the Calvin Klein Core Institutional Logo Slim Tee in size M is described as a small fit, and choosing a size up may give you a standard fit. That’s more useful than relying on the letter M alone.

2. Confusing cotton with polyester

100% cotton feels different from polyester. Cotton T-shirts are especially practical for everyday wear and casual outfits. Polyester is more common in sportswear, as the product description may note that it’s lightweight and has moisture-wicking properties.

Look out for fabric blends, too. A T-shirt may be made mainly from cotton, but have a trim made from, for example, 80% cotton and 20% polyester. The composition is usually listed separately.

3. Prioritising a striking design over care requirements

A large logo or print can define the look, but it also needs the right care. Some T-shirts should be washed inside out with similar colours, and the print shouldn’t be ironed directly. Don’t ignore the care label: washing incorrectly can cause shrinkage, colour loss or damage to the print.

Which specifications should you check?

Fabric for everyday wear

For everyday wear, cotton T-shirts with a crew neck and regular fit are easy to pair with jeans, shorts or a jacket. Tommy Hilfiger, adidas, PUMA and Calvin Klein have styles listed as 100% cotton. They make a good starting point for a casual wardrobe, as long as the fit suits your preference.

Size is especially important for babies and young children. Chicco lists both the size and an age guide for several styles, such as size 056 for around 3 months or size 086 for around 18 months. Age is only a guide, so for growing children, check their height and allow enough room around the chest and shoulders.

Fit and freedom of movement

  • Slim fit: sits closer to the body and works well as a layer under a shirt or jacket.
  • Regular fit: generally gives you more room to move throughout the day.
  • Sports fit: look for lightweight fabric, a crew neck and enough room around the shoulders and arms.

A long-sleeved T-shirt, such as the Scotch & Soda style, is handy for layering in spring and autumn. Check that the sleeves aren’t too long and that the fabric is listed as 100% cotton.

Short sleeves or long sleeves?

Short-sleeved T-shirts are practical for warm days, under a jumper or for casual occasions. Long-sleeved T-shirts offer more coverage and work well under a jacket or cardigan. For sport, dedicated sports T-shirts made from polyester are often a better choice than heavyweight cotton, especially when freedom of movement and a lightweight feel matter.

Caring for your T-shirts so they last longer

Wash dark T-shirts inside out with similar colours. For printed styles, use a gentle cycle if the care label recommends it. Avoid bleach unless the label says it’s safe, and check whether the garment is suitable for tumble drying. For example, the adidas Adicolor Classics 3-Stripes Tee is listed as suitable for tumble drying at a low temperature or air drying. The care instructions also recommend ironing carefully and avoiding direct contact with the print.

A T-shirt won’t automatically last longer just because it costs more. The combination of material, care instructions, fit and how you wear it determines whether it’s right for your wardrobe.

Frequently asked questions about T-shirts

How do I choose the right T-shirt size?

Measure your chest and compare it with the size guide on the product page. Also check the fit. With a slim fit, you may prefer to go up a size, while regular fit gives you more room. For baby T-shirts and boys’ T-shirts, height and the age guide are useful additional details.

How often should you wash a T-shirt?

It depends on how you wear it, how much you perspire and the material. Air a T-shirt after a short wear if it still feels fresh, and always follow the care label when washing it. Wash printed T-shirts inside out and with similar colours to help prevent fading.

Is cotton suitable for sport?

Cotton can be comfortable for light activities and everyday wear. For intensive training, look for a sports T-shirt whose product information lists polyester and moisture-wicking properties. The right choice depends on the activity and your personal preference.
