Buying sweetcorn: how to choose the right corn on the cob, kernels or snack

Sweetcorn is available as fresh corn on the cob, vacuum-packed corn, ready-to-eat corn kernels, sweetcorn, glutinous corn and cornmeal. This wide range is useful, but it also makes comparing products more difficult. Packaging featuring words such as “fresh”, “natural” or “premium” tells you little by itself about preparation, texture or shelf life.

For families, fans of Asian food and those buying in bulk, three pitfalls are particularly important:

  • The name does not always tell you about the texture. Standard sweetcorn is often juicy and crisp, while glutinous corn can feel softer and firmer.
  • “Ready-to-eat” can mean different things. Some products can be eaten straight away, while others need to be boiled or steamed first.
  • A large pack is not automatically better value. Check the drained weight, number of cobs and shelf life after opening.

Which type of sweetcorn is right for your needs?

The right choice depends on what you want to use it for.

Fresh corn or vacuum-packed corn on the cob is ideal for barbecues, quick meals or a side dish. It takes up slightly more space than kernels, but gives you the familiar experience of eating corn straight from the cob.

Sweetcorn generally has a juicy bite and a sweeter flavour. Be sure to check the ingredients list, though: some packs contain only corn, while others also include water and salt.

Glutinous corn, also known as waxy or glutinous corn, has a softer, compact and slightly chewy texture. This variety is common in Asian cuisines and is suitable for steaming, grilling, soups and rice dishes.

Corn kernels are practical for stir-fries, salads and soups. They are the obvious choice if you do not want to prepare a cob or if you want to divide the portion easily.

Special snacks, such as an organic corn snack, are available for children from 7 months. These products serve a different purpose from ordinary sweetcorn. Always check the age recommendation, allergen information and instructions on the packaging. Supervise children while they are eating.

Three specifications to check before buying

1. Ingredients, allergens and nutritional information

Do not just look at the front of the packaging. Check:

  • the proportion of corn;
  • whether it contains water, salt or other additives;
  • allergens such as cereals containing gluten, soya or milk;
  • nutritional values per 100 grams;
  • the net weight and, for preserved products, the drained weight.

For example, the Nong Sao Sweet Corn Kernels 400g states that the product contains 96% sweetcorn, water and salt. The product information lists 88 kcal and 0.19 grams of salt per 100 grams. Information like this makes products easier to compare than general claims on the front of the pack.

Read claims about product properties carefully. According to its own information, the N47° Low-GI Fruit Corn has a low glycaemic index. This is a brand claim, not a medical assessment. For everyday use, the nutrition label remains the source you can verify.

2. Preparation method and packaging

Vacuum packaging can be convenient, but follow the instructions carefully. With some products, the outer packaging must be removed while the inner bag remains in place during steaming. For microwave preparation, the inner bag may instead need to be torn open.

Look out for the difference between:

  • ready to eat: open and serve;
  • requires reheating: for example, briefly in hot water or the microwave;
  • cooking required: boil, steam or grill first.

According to the product description, N47° Ready-to-Eat Sweet Corn Double Pack can be eaten straight from the bag or heated for one to two minutes. By contrast, the Sanpangdan Sweet Glutinous Corn 1.82kg/Bag Bulk Pack needs to be boiled or steamed. So if you are looking for a quick lunch, you could be disappointed if you only look at the product name.

3. Quantity, origin and storage

Compare portions by both weight and number of cobs. A 450-gram pack containing two cobs is different from ten individual 220-gram portions. A multipack can be useful for a family, while a smaller pack helps avoid unnecessary leftovers if you only use corn occasionally.

Also check the origin. According to the product information, several products in this range come from China, including various types of glutinous corn and vacuum-packed sweetcorn. This is relevant information if you pay close attention to where your food comes from.

After opening, corn will usually need to be refrigerated and consumed quickly. The exact time varies from one product to another. Always check the date and storage instructions on the packaging, even if the pack can be resealed.

Frequently asked questions about sweetcorn

Is sweetcorn from China safe to buy?

Origin alone does not determine whether a product is suitable. Check the ingredients, allergens, best-before date, responsible importer and preparation instructions on the packaging. For products from China, the origin is stated in the product information. Do not use vacuum-packed corn on the cob if the packaging is damaged or swollen.

How long does vacuum-packed corn stay fresh?

This varies by product and packaging. Store unopened corn according to the label, usually in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator. After opening, you will generally need to keep the corn in the fridge and eat it quickly. Some packs specify one day; always follow the shortest time stated on the label.

Can you heat ready-to-eat corn in the microwave?

This is possible with various products, but not always in the sealed bag. Remove the outer packaging and follow the specific instructions for the inner packaging. For ready-to-eat corn on the cob, one to five minutes may be sufficient, while glutinous corn may sometimes need longer to heat through. After heating, check that the corn is evenly hot.
