Choosing a storage unit: how to find a practical cabinet for home and the office

An extra storage unit may seem easy to choose, until you discover that many models turn out differently from what you expected. A cabinet can look larger in a photo than it does in the room, a clothes rail may be less stable than hoped and a cheap plastic cabinet is not automatically suitable for heavy items.

For homes in the Netherlands, student rooms, home offices and small workspaces, three pitfalls are particularly important:

  • Misjudging dimensions: check not only the width, but also the depth, height, access routes and the space needed for doors or drawers.
  • Confusing load capacity with practical use: a stated maximum load is usually a static value. Distribute heavy items evenly and do not exceed the limit.
  • Underestimating assembly and stability: assembling a cabinet without tools is convenient, but once assembled, the unit must still stand on a level surface and may sometimes need to be secured to the wall.

Which specifications should you check?

1. Dimensions and layout

Measure the available space before ordering a storage cabinet or wardrobe. Take skirting boards, sloping walls and sockets into account. For clothing, the difference between a hanging rail and shelves is also important.

For example, a fabric clothes organiser measuring 150 × 45 × 175 cm offers plenty of vertical storage, but requires a depth of 45 cm. A narrow office drawer unit measuring around 40 cm wide may fit under or beside a desk, while a filing cabinet with deep drawers requires more space to walk around.

Also consider the internal layout:

  • Hanging rail: suitable for coats, dresses and shirts.
  • Shelves: practical for bed linen, shoes, boxes and accessories.
  • Drawers: useful for documents, cables and small office supplies.
  • Wheels: helpful if you want to move the mobile cabinet regularly.

2. Material and load capacity

The material determines where the unit is best suited. A plastic storage cabinet is lightweight, easy to wipe clean and suitable for smaller items in places such as a bathroom, student room or storage area. Do check the maximum weight per shelf. According to the product description of the COIZYZZL models, these cabinets are intended for indoor use and are not suitable for heavy industrial loads.

A metal mobile storage cabinet or lockable filing cabinet is generally more suitable for documents and office supplies. The JOYFURNOS mobile filing unit, for example, lists a maximum load of 15 kg per drawer. This is a verifiable product specification, but it is not a reason to load the drawers to their maximum capacity on a regular basis.

With a clothes rail on wheels, consider:

  • the total static load capacity;
  • the thickness and type of frame;
  • the number of wheels;
  • whether the wheels can be locked;
  • stability when the load is unevenly distributed.

The JOYFURNOS clothes rails state a maximum static load of 100 kg. According to the product description, the frame is made of steel with PP wheels. Nevertheless, distribute heavy clothing evenly and lock the wheels when the rail is stationary.

3. Protection, assembly and safety

A lockable filing cabinet can provide privacy for documents, but check whether the lock operates all the drawers and how the unit is supplied. A pre-assembled model saves time, while a modular unit is easier to carry through a narrow staircase or doorway.

With a fabric cabinet, a zipped door is useful for helping to protect clothing from dust. According to the product description of the JOYFURNOS clothes organisers, the cover can be closed or rolled up. The manufacturer also states that the unit must be secured to the wall using the supplied anti-tip kit and must be empty before being moved. Always follow instructions of this kind.

Also check:

  • whether the instructions are available in a language you understand;
  • whether connectors, wheels and fixing materials are included;
  • whether the cabinet is intended for indoor use only;
  • whether there are warnings concerning children, heat sources or overloading.

  1. Measure the space and compare it with the unit’s external dimensions.
  2. Decide whether you mainly want to hang, stack, sort or lock away.
  3. Compare the load capacity per shelf, drawer or rail with the weight of your belongings.
  4. Check whether the wheels can be locked and whether wall fixing is required.
  5. Read the assembly instructions and safety warnings.
  6. Check that the material suits the space: plastic for easy maintenance, steel for more intensive use and fabric for lightweight, flexible clothing storage.

Frequently asked questions about storage units

Which storage unit is suitable for a small bedroom?

A compact plastic storage cabinet or fabric clothes organiser makes use of the available height without taking up much floor space. Pay particular attention to the depth and check that doors, drawers or a cover can move freely.

Is a clothes rail on wheels stable enough for heavy clothing?

That depends on the frame, wheelbase and stated load capacity. Distribute clothing evenly, use the wheel brakes and place the rail on a level surface. A clothes rail is not intended to be climbed on and must not be used above the stated load capacity.

How long does a storage unit last?

Its lifespan depends on the material, load, assembly and use. A unit that remains below its maximum capacity, is kept dry and stable, and is maintained according to the instructions will generally be less prone to deformation or loose connections. With intensive use, regularly check the wheels, screws, connectors and drawers.
