A storage cabinet might seem easy to choose, but the wrong size, unsuitable material or unclear weight capacity can quickly become frustrating. This applies just as much in a small student room as it does in a bedroom, bathroom or home office.
Look out for these three common pitfalls:
Not paying enough attention to the dimensions
A cabinet might look compact in a photo, but be too deep for a narrow walkway or too tall for an alcove in practice. So measure not only the available space, but also skirting boards, doors and clearance for moving around.
“Plenty of storage” without a clear layout
A large storage cabinet isn’t automatically practical. Open shelves are handy for books and baskets, while drawers work better for small items, cables, accessories and clothes. So check how many shelves, drawers and compartments it has.
Confusing mobility with stability
A cabinet on wheels is easy to move, but needs to stand on a level surface. For a mobile storage cabinet, weight capacity, wheel quality and the risk of tipping are important considerations. Put heavy items at the bottom and always follow the safety instructions.
Before buying, note the maximum height, width and depth. In a small bedroom, a narrow storage cabinet might be more efficient than a wide chest of drawers. For example, a bedside table measuring 40 × 30 × 40 cm will fit beside many beds without taking up too much floor space.
Check the internal dimensions, too. A cabinet with five small drawers is suitable for accessories, stationery or toiletries, but not for large towels or thick jumpers. Also check whether the cabinet needs assembling and how much space you’ll need to do so.
The material affects where you can use a storage unit:
You can usually clean a smooth surface with a soft, damp cloth. Don’t use harsh cleaning products if the product information advises against them.
A stated maximum load is an important product specification that you can check. Distribute the weight across the shelves and place heavy items at the bottom. For a tall bedroom cabinet or chest of drawers, an anti-tip device may be important. For example, the JOYFURNOS model comes with an anti-tip kit; attach it to the wall according to the instructions.
Also check:
A product with a statutory warranty of at least two years is covered by EU consumer rules. This doesn’t mean that every part can bear unlimited weight: usage and safety instructions still apply.

Read the full instructions first and check that all the panels, connectors and screws are included. Assemble the cabinet on a level surface and only fully tighten the fixings once the structure is properly aligned. Fit an anti-tip kit if one is included.
Its lifespan depends on the material, load, assembly and the environment it’s used in. Don’t leave wood-based panels in a damp room for extended periods unless the product information says this is suitable. For plastic models, regular wiping and avoiding overloading will help keep the structure in good condition.
A storage cabinet doesn’t use electricity. The main costs are the purchase price, assembly and any maintenance. With a cabinet on wheels, floor protection and replacing damaged wheels may become relevant over time. So check in advance that the wheels are suitable for your flooring.
