Buying a Storage Cabinet: How to Choose a Practical Cabinet Without Making the Wrong Choice

A storage cabinet may seem straightforward to choose, but the wrong layout, an impractical size or insufficient load capacity can quickly lead to frustration. This applies in the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, living room and home office. A cabinet that looks spacious in the photo may offer very little usable storage in reality. Features such as “moisture-resistant”, “sturdy” or “quick assembly” are also not always described consistently.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I filter the most important product specifications so that you can compare offers more effectively and choose a cabinet that suits your space and how you plan to use it.

Three common pitfalls when buying a storage cabinet

1. Looking only at the external dimensions

A cabinet measuring 100 cm wide does not automatically provide plenty of storage space. Doors, drawers, back panels and dividers all take up room. So make sure you also check:

  • the internal dimensions of compartments and drawers;
  • the clearance required to open the doors;
  • the depth of the shelves;
  • the distance from skirting boards, pipes and sockets;
  • the space needed to pull drawers out fully.

For a narrow hallway, a shoe and storage unit with a shallow depth may be more practical than a wide living-room cabinet.

2. Underestimating a damp room

A bathroom cabinet is exposed to condensation, splashing water and regular cleaning. A material claim does not guarantee that a cabinet can be exposed to unlimited moisture. According to the HaluPeit bathroom cabinet’s product description, the MDF and metal components used are intended for a humid environment. Even so, it is sensible to remove standing water immediately and avoid placing the cabinet against a wall that is constantly wet.

With a sink base unit, you should also check the cut-out, trap and sink height. Not every bathroom cabinet will fit around a sink with or without a pedestal.

3. Overloading drawers and shelves

A cabinet with drawers is useful for clothes, documents and small items, but fabric drawers are not suitable for heavy objects. For example, the JOYFURNOS chest of drawers with seven drawers specifies a maximum static load of 3 kg per drawer. According to the product specifications, the top has a higher load capacity, but that does not mean that every drawer can support the same weight.

For a filing cabinet or mobile filing cabinet, the load per drawer is particularly important. Also check the type of drawer runners, the stability of the frame and whether the cabinet can be secured to prevent it from tipping over.

Which specifications should you check?

Dimensions and layout

Start by measuring the available space and allow a few centimetres of clearance around it. Then note what type of storage you need:

  • Adjustable shelves: suitable for bottles, crockery, boxes and books of different heights.
  • Drawers: useful for smaller items, documents, accessories and underwear.
  • Doors: protect the contents from dust more effectively and create a tidier appearance.
  • Open compartments: suitable for items you use frequently or want to display.
  • Wheels: practical if you plan to move the cabinet regularly.

According to the product specifications, a kitchen cabinet measuring 40 × 100 × 180 cm offers several types of storage, including glass compartments, adjustable shelves, two drawers and a base cabinet. During assembly, check that the cabinet will fit through doorways; its stated weight is almost 48 kg.

Materials and care

Many models are made from chipboard, MDF, metal or a combination of these materials. Consider the practical implications:

  • MDF and chipboard: easy to clean, but the edges should not remain wet for long periods.
  • Metal: suitable for an office or filing cabinet, but check the finish and ventilation.
  • Fabric drawers: lightweight and flexible, but less suitable for heavy or sharp objects.
  • Toughened glass: useful for a display cabinet, but handle the doors carefully.

The Atmosphera Danik display cabinet specifies a maximum load of 5 kg per shelf. This is important if you want to store books, crockery or decorative items. A cabinet with an attractive appearance is not automatically suitable for heavy storage.

Safety and assembly

For tall or narrow furniture, preferably choose a model supplied with an anti-tip kit. Secure the cabinet to the wall according to the instructions, particularly in households with children. Also check:

  • whether all parts and fixings are included;
  • whether assembly by one person is recommended;
  • whether the cabinet arrives fully assembled or as a flat-pack;
  • whether the wheels can be locked;
  • whether sockets and cables remain safely accessible.

A lockable cabinet is useful for confidential documents. However, a lock will not prevent a cabinet from tipping over, so wall anchoring remains important.

Frequently asked questions about storage cabinets

How do I secure a storage cabinet safely?

Place the cabinet on a level surface, adjust any feet correctly and use the anti-tip kit provided. Secure tall or narrow furniture to a suitable wall. Beforehand, check that the wall and wall plugs are suitable for the fixing.

How long does a storage cabinet last?

Its lifespan depends on the material, assembly, load and maintenance. Follow the maximum load capacity, avoid prolonged exposure to moisture and tighten the fixings securely after assembly. On a cabinet with drawers, the drawer runners will wear more quickly if the drawers are overloaded.

Does a storage cabinet use electricity?

A standard bathroom cabinet, chest of drawers, filing cabinet or living-room cabinet does not use electricity. A model with built-in lighting or sockets may use electricity when the lights or connected devices are switched on. Check the technical information for the specific model.
