Choosing sports sunglasses: look for UV400, fit and intended use

Sports sunglasses need to do more than look the part. When cycling, you are exposed to bright sunlight, reflections from wet tarmac, wind, dust and unexpected branches or stones. A pair that feels comfortable in the shop may still slip, steam up or provide insufficient visibility once you are on the move.

Most disappointing purchases result from three familiar pitfalls:

  • Only looking at the dark lens. A dark lens does not automatically mean that the sunglasses provide sufficient UV protection.
  • Confusing polarisation with impact protection. Polarised sports sunglasses can reduce glare, but that alone says nothing about the strength of the frame or lens.
  • Prioritising weight over fit. Lightweight sunglasses are comfortable, but cycling glasses that are too wide or loose can still become uncomfortable and slip during a descent.

So start by looking at the technical specifications, and only then consider the colour or shape.

Which features matter in sports sunglasses?

1. Check the UV400 protection

The UV400 designation refers to protection against UV radiation up to a wavelength of 400 nanometres. Check that this specification is clearly stated in the product information. Sunglasses for cycling, walking or travelling are often worn outdoors for long periods, so a tinted lens alone is not a sufficient selection criterion.

Also pay attention to the difference between a brand claim and an independent standard. For example, if a product claims to offer “100% UV400”, present this as a manufacturer’s product specification. According to Revoray’s product information, the Y1 and X3 models feature UV400 protection. This is a stated feature, not a general guarantee for every pair of sunglasses.

2. Lens material and impact protection

For road cycling, mountain biking and unpaved paths, a wide field of vision is useful. An integrated PC lens can cover a large area without a prominent central edge. PC stands for polycarbonate; TAC lenses consist of multiple layers and are often used for polarised lenses.

According to the product description, the Revoray X3 cycling glasses use an integrated PC lens and a TR90 frame. The product information also mentions an ANSI Z87.1 performance test for the X3 and Y1 models. ANSI Z87.1 is an American performance standard covering, among other things, impact resistance. If you use them as safety sunglasses, always check that the glasses are suitable for the specific risks associated with your activity and that the seller can provide up-to-date documentation. Sports glasses are not automatically certified safety glasses for every working environment.

3. Fit, weight and light transmission

Lightweight sunglasses reduce pressure on your nose and ears during longer rides. According to the product information, the Revoray X3 weighs approximately 30 grams, the Y1 approximately 33 grams and the Beneunder FD421 approximately 26 grams.

A good fit involves more than low weight:

  • adjustable nose pads help fine-tune the height and pressure;
  • non-slip rubber can help limit movement caused by sweat or activity;
  • a medium to large frame often provides greater protection from the wind;
  • the lens height and bridge width should suit your face.

According to the product description, the Y1 models have adjustable silicone nose pads and non-slip sections at the temples. The stated visible light transmission is approximately 15.2%. This is mainly suitable for sunny conditions. For overcast days, woodland rides or dusk, a lighter lens may be more practical.

Polarisation, coatings and driving

Polarised sports sunglasses can reduce distracting reflections from water, wet roads and metal surfaces. This is useful for cyclists and motorists. However, polarisation does not automatically make glasses suitable for every screen, dashboard or lighting condition. Test whether your navigation screen and cycling computer remain easy to read.

Sunglasses for driving should provide sufficient visibility in tunnels, shade and changing weather. Very dark lenses, such as models with low light transmission, are not always practical for everyday traffic. For driving, choose a model with clear information about its lens category and light transmission.

Coatings can make everyday care easier. According to the product information, the Revoray Y1 features water- and oil-repellent layers, a scratch-resistant layer and a Revo mirror coating. According to the manufacturer, the Beneunder FD421 has an OAR anti-reflective coating and a protective coating. Beneunder’s own information states that this coating is intended to reduce glare by at least 99.6% and block at least 99.9% of UV radiation. These are brand claims, so check the full product specifications and user experiences before treating them as decisive.

Care for a longer service life

Rinse off sand and salt with clean water before wiping the lens. Then use a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid alcohol and harsh cleaning products if the manufacturer advises against them. Store the sunglasses in a protective case and do not leave them in a hot car for extended periods.

A scratch-resistant coating does not make a lens scratch-proof. So do not place sports sunglasses lens-side down on a table or put them in a bag with keys. Regularly check that the nose pads and non-slip sections are still firmly attached.

Frequently asked questions about sports sunglasses

Is UV400 the same as a polarised lens?

No. UV400 concerns protection against UV radiation. Polarisation concerns filtering certain reflections and glare. Cycling glasses can therefore have UV400 protection without being polarised, or they can combine both features.

Which sports sunglasses are suitable for driving?

Choose a model with suitable light transmission and good visibility in changing conditions. Very dark road cycling sunglasses can be impractical in tunnels or shade. Also check that navigation screens remain readable. Foldable sunglasses such as the Beneunder FD421 are mainly intended for everyday use and travel; the product information states that they offer UV400 protection and anti-reflective properties, but always check the current lens category.

How long do sports sunglasses last?

This depends on use, care and storage. The UV400 feature is not an indication of the service life of the frame or coating. Replace the sunglasses when the lens has deep scratches, the frame has become distorted or the fit is no longer stable. According to the product information, the Revoray models mentioned come with a limited one-year warranty covering certain quality issues not caused by the user.
