Choose sneakers without regrets: pay attention to fit, material and intended use

Ordering a pair of sneakers online seems straightforward, until the model feels tight, too warm or turns out after a few weeks not to be suitable for what you bought it for. A casual model is not automatically suitable for running, and a soft insole does not tell you everything about the fit.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  1. Confusing a well-known brand name with the right shoe. Nike Dunk Low sneakers and Converse sneakers are popular for everyday wear, but their low, sturdy profile is not the same as that of adidas running shoes or other sports footwear.
  2. Looking only at cushioning. Memory Foam or a soft sockliner may feel comfortable, but also check the width, heel fit and sole construction.
  3. Ordering your usual size without checking the size guide. Sizing can vary between brands and models. For example, the Skechers Arch Fit-Big Appeal in size 39 is described as having a generous fit, with the advice to order one size smaller. Other models, such as the Skechers Track-Ripkent, are described in the product information as true to size.

Which sneakers suit your needs?

Women’s sneakers and men’s sneakers differ in more than just colour or model name. Start by considering the activity and the surface you will be using them on.

  • For everyday wear and walking: choose a flexible rubber sole, a securely adjustable lace fastening and an upper that is not too stiff.
  • For a casual streetwear look: leather, synthetic leather or canvas often creates a more structured appearance. Nike Dunk Low sneakers and Converse sneakers work well with jeans, chinos and casual clothing.
  • For sport or short runs: look for a breathable mesh upper, a lightweight midsole and grip suited to tarmac or gym floors.
  • For changing conditions: a rubber outsole with a pronounced tread can provide extra grip, but may make the shoe heavier. For walks on unpaved paths, more technical models are more practical than ordinary casual sneakers.

A product description may mention comfort or support. Treat such terms as information about the shoe’s construction, not as a medical promise. A brand’s own research may suggest that certain features create a particular experience, but this does not replace a personal fit assessment or professional advice.

Three specifications to check beforehand

1. Fit, width and sizing advice

As well as the EU size, check the stated shoe width. A model with a D or G width may feel different from a shoe without clear width information. Ideally, measure your foot at the end of the day and compare its length with the product’s size guide.

Be aware of differences within the same brand. The Skechers Burns 52635 BBK is available in sizes 42 and 46 and is described as true to size. The Skechers Slip-Ins BOBS Sport Squad Chaos in size 42.5 also has a standard fit. The Skechers Arch Fit-Big Appeal differs, with advice to order a smaller size.

2. Upper and ventilation

A textile or mesh upper is often lightweight and breathable. This can be comfortable for everyday walking, travelling or a workout. Mesh is less suitable, however, if you are mainly looking for a smooth, easy-care appearance.

Leather or synthetic leather creates a different look and can provide more structure. The Nike Dunk Low models use leather and textile, while the Converse Star Player 76 OX has a canvas upper. Also check the lining and seams: a sturdy shoe can be comfortable, but may need a longer break-in period.

3. Sole, cushioning and care

A rubber sole generally provides grip and durability, but its composition and tread determine how the shoe performs. A flat sole is usually better suited to everyday wear than running. For running shoes, a suitable midsole, an appropriate tread and a secure heel fit are more important than appearance alone.

Memory Foam, Air-Cooled Memory Foam, Cloudfoam and SOFTFOAM+ are product features found in various models. They can make the step-in feel softer, but also check whether the insole is removable. Several Skechers models have a non-removable insole. This is important if you use your own orthotic insoles.

Follow the care instructions. Some models are machine washable on a delicate cold cycle, while others may only be cleaned with a damp cloth. Allow sneakers to air-dry and do not use a tumble dryer unless this is permitted.

Frequently asked questions about sneakers

Which sneakers are suitable for everyday walking?

Choose a model with a flexible rubber sole, an adjustable fastening and an upper that provides sufficient ventilation. Skechers models with Memory Foam are designed to offer a softer step-in feel, while lightweight mesh sneakers may feel less warm. Always check the width and stated fit.

Can I wear running shoes as everyday sneakers?

You can, but it depends on the model and your personal style. adidas running shoes and other sports footwear often have more cushioning and a sportier profile. For everyday wear only, this may be unnecessary; for walking, commuting and short runs, it can be a practical choice.

How long do sneakers last?

Their lifespan depends on how often you wear them, the surface you use them on, your body weight, care and the materials. Look out for tread becoming smooth, seams coming loose, deformation around the heel and persistent creasing that affects the fit. Alternating between two pairs and cleaning them according to the label can help reduce wear, but replace a pair as soon as its construction no longer feels comfortable or stable.
