Choosing skincare sets: how to find a skincare set that’s right for you

A set containing several skincare products often seems like good value and an easy choice. In practice, however, it’s easy to buy a product that doesn’t suit your skin, hair or intended use. A large box of miniatures, for example, may mainly contain products you won’t use. Several active ingredients in one routine can also be too much for sensitive skin.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I filter product information based on practical details: contents, formulation, order of use and intended user. This means you can compare skincare sets not just by their packaging or brand name, but by verifiable features.

Three common pitfalls when buying skincare sets

1. A complete set isn’t always a complete routine

Check which steps are actually included. A facial skincare set with cleanser, toner, serum and cream is put together differently from a set containing just three serums. Also look out for missing sun protection. According to the product information, products containing acids such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid may increase sensitivity to sunlight. In that case, a separate SPF may be needed.

2. “For all skin types” says little about your skin

This description doesn’t replace checking the ingredients. Fragrance, essential oils, exfoliating acids and certain preservatives may be less suitable for some users. Therefore, always check the INCI list, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin. Test a new product on a small area of skin first and stop using it if you experience redness, itching, swelling or a burning sensation.

3. Using lots of products at once makes comparison difficult

When you start several new products on the same day, you won’t know which product has caused a reaction. Introduce a Korean skincare set or another skincare set step by step. For example, start with cleansing and moisturising. Only then add a serum or exfoliant, following the instructions on the label.

Which specifications should you check?

Contents, size and shelf life

A set with 4 to 5 miniatures is practical if you want to try a brand or are looking for a skincare travel kit. For everyday use, larger packs are usually more sensible. Check:

  • the contents of each product in millilitres or grams;
  • the number of products in the pack;
  • the shelf life of an unopened product;
  • the PAO symbol, for example 12M, which indicates how long the product is intended to be used after opening;
  • whether a product comes with a pump, pipette, pot or tube.

A pot is less convenient for travelling than a tube or bottle with a cap. With a lip care set such as the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask Set, for example, each pot contains 20 grams and the pack consists of three variants.

Active ingredients and concentrations

Don’t just look for words such as “glow”, “repair” or “anti-ageing serum set”. Check which ingredients and percentages are actually listed. According to the product information, The Ordinary Bright Set includes a 7% glycolic acid toner, a serum containing 2% alpha-arbutin and a caffeine solution with 5% caffeine. This makes the set more specific to assess than a general promise of radiant-looking skin.

In an acne skincare set or a set for blemish-prone skin, salicylic acid is an ingredient you’ll often come across. According to the product specification, The Ordinary The Clear Set contains a solution with 2% salicylic acid, alongside a cleanser and gel cream. This is product information, not a guarantee of a particular skin result. Use it according to the label and don’t combine several exfoliating products without a good reason.

Safety and European product information

Cosmetics sold in the European Union must include mandatory information such as ingredients, the responsible party, contents and shelf life. Check that this information is clearly shown on the packaging and product page. Also look out for:

  • warnings about contact with the eyes and damaged skin;
  • allergens and fragrance ingredients in the INCI list;
  • usage advice for acids or other active ingredients;
  • different shelf-life details for each product in a larger set.

A brand claim about performance should be treated as a claim made by the brand. For example, the product description for some sets states that a formula supports the skin barrier or reduces signs of ageing. This is according to the manufacturer or product information and is not a guaranteed result for every user.

Frequently asked questions about skincare sets

Are skincare sets cheaper than buying products separately?

It varies from set to set. Compare the total contents, not just the number of boxes. A set with three miniatures can be useful for getting to know a brand, while larger individual packs may offer better value for everyday use. Also check whether you really need every step.

How long does a skincare set last?

This depends on the contents and how you use it. After opening, note the PAO period, for example 12M, and follow the shelf-life information on the packaging. Miniatures often last for less time because they contain less product, but they are useful for travelling or trying a product for the first time.

Which set is suitable for sensitive skin?

Don’t choose solely based on the “sensitive skin” label. Check the ingredients for fragrance, essential oils and exfoliating acids. Introduce one new product at a time, carry out a patch test and follow the warnings on the label. If irritation persists, it’s best to stop using the product and seek medical advice.
