Choosing running shoes: how to find the right pair for road, trail and everyday use

Buying a new pair of running shoes sounds simple, until you have to choose between cushioning, grip, weight, water resistance and fit. Marketing terms do not always make it clear which model is right for your needs. A shoe designed for asphalt behaves differently from a trail shoe, while some trainers for running are mainly suitable for short distances or everyday use.

So do not focus only on the brand and appearance. Above all, check the construction, sizing and the surface the shoe is designed for.

Three common pitfalls when choosing running shoes

1. Focusing too much on cushioning

Cushioned running shoes can feel comfortable, but more cushioning does not automatically mean a better choice. A soft midsole can be comfortable for walking or easy runs, while a firmer model provides more control on uneven ground. Look at the material, such as EVA, Cloudfoam, React or ABZORB, and match it to how you intend to use the shoes.

For short runs on the road, lightweight running shoes with a breathable upper are often practical. For longer distances, a well-fitting midsole may be more important than keeping the weight as low as possible.

2. Wearing trail shoes on every surface

Trail running shoes usually have a lugged tread for mud, loose soil and woodland paths. On smooth asphalt, these soles may feel less flexible and wear more quickly. Conversely, a standard road-running shoe often provides insufficient grip on wet roots, sand or loose stones.

So check the outsole. A flatter rubber tread is better suited to urban routes, while deep grooves and multidirectional lugs make more sense on off-road terrain.

3. Mistaking waterproof for completely problem-free

Waterproof running shoes and GORE-TEX running shoes can keep out rain and splashes more effectively than open mesh. Salomon’s product description states that the Speedcross models feature a GORE-TEX membrane for protection against water. This is a manufacturer’s product specification, not a guarantee that water can never enter through the tongue, opening or upper.

A sealed membrane can also feel different from a fully open mesh shoe. On dry summer days, ventilation may be more important than water resistance.

Important specifications to compare

Fit and sizing

Measure both feet at the end of the day and compare their length with the size chart for the model you have chosen. Brand sizing is not always consistent. As well as length, consider:

  • room around the toes, especially during longer walks;
  • a heel that does not lift as you walk;
  • sufficient width around the forefoot;
  • the thickness of your running socks;
  • a lacing or fastening system that provides an even fit.

A standard fit is not automatically suitable for a wide foot. Some models are available in different versions. PELLIOT product information, for example, lists both a standard and a slim version.

Midsole and cushioning

The midsole largely determines how the shoe feels. Common materials include EVA, React foam, Cloudfoam and ABZORB. Product names such as “responsive” or “energy return” are marketing language, so look at the technical description and intended use.

For everyday walking and short distances, shoes with a comfortable foam layer can be versatile. If you mainly run on technical trails, you will also need a stable base and an outsole with a suitable tread.

Outsole and grip

Rubber provides durability and contact with the ground. For wet Dutch cycle paths, parks and woodland routes, the tread is more important than the colour or brand. Look for:

  • flat tread for road use;
  • multidirectional lugs for changing surfaces;
  • deeper grooves for soft or muddy paths;
  • rubber on high-wear areas for everyday use.

Also check the care instructions. Many models should not be put in the washing machine. Cleaning them by hand with a soft brush or damp cloth helps prevent unnecessary strain on the mesh, bonded areas and membranes.

Running shoes for women, men and children

The description women’s running shoes or men’s running shoes does not tell you everything about the fit. The last, internal space and available size are more important than the label. Always check the product measurements and foot length. A women’s model such as the Salomon Speedcross 5 GTX W may have a different shape or size distribution, but the individual foot remains the key consideration.

For children’s running shoes, a flexible sole, adjustable fastening and sufficient toe room are practical features. According to the product information, the Skechers Meteor-Lights in size 33 has a standard fit, rubber sole and hook-and-loop fastening. This makes the model particularly suitable for school, play and everyday active use. Check children’s sizes regularly, as their feet grow quickly.

Frequently asked questions about running shoes

How long do running shoes last?

Their lifespan depends on body weight, surface, running frequency, care and wear. Look out for a tread that has become smooth, cracks in the upper, seams coming loose or a midsole that has visibly compressed. There is no universal mileage limit that applies to every model. Nor should you automatically alternate a pair for trail running with a pair for asphalt.

Are expensive running shoes essential?

No. The right choice depends on fit and intended use. An affordable model for short road-training sessions may make more sense than a technical trail shoe that you only wear on flat asphalt. Compare the outsole, midsole, fastening and size chart rather than looking only at the price or brand name.

Can I wear running trainers every day as well?

You can if the fit and sole work for both activities. Models such as New Balance U1906ROA and U2002RCE are described in the product information as suitable for sport, casual wear and everyday use. For regular running training, however, it is worth checking that the grip, cushioning and stability suit your route.
