Buying a replacement filter: how to choose the right filter cartridge without making an expensive mistake

A replacement filter may seem like a straightforward purchase. Yet things often go wrong: a cartridge is just the wrong size, a filter becomes blocked quickly or the recommended replacement period does not suit your usage. If you want to buy a replacement filter, it is therefore worth checking the appliance, dimensions and usage scenario first.

This applies to Philips shavers, Bestway or Intex swimming pool pumps, air purifiers and kitchen appliances. A low price means little if you cannot install the product or need to replace it much more often than expected.

Three common pitfalls when buying a replacement filter

1. Searching by brand name alone

A filter for a Bestway pump is not automatically suitable for every Bestway pump. Type designations such as Type I, Type II, Type III/A-C and Type IV/B refer to different dimensions and applications. Always check the pump model number or the old filter.

Compatibility is also limited with a Philips Quick Clean Pod cartridge. The CC12/50, CC13/50 and CC16/50 are designed for the Philips Quick Clean Pod and not for other cleaning stations.

2. Confusing marketing claims with guaranteed performance

Terms such as “extra hygienic”, “effective filtration” or “long-lasting performance” need to be read in the right context. According to Philips’ own research, the Quick Clean Pod formula can clean up to ten times more thoroughly than rinsing with water alone. This is a brand claim based on the conditions used by Philips, not a universal guarantee for every appliance or user.

Pay particular attention to verifiable details: filter type, dimensions, material, quantity and recommended replacement interval.

3. Forgetting ongoing maintenance costs

A filter cartridge is a recurring purchase. A multipack of cartridges can be convenient, but you should also consider how often you use the appliance. A pool filter may need to be cleaned or replaced more frequently with intensive use. According to the product description, a carbon filter for a cooker hood may need replacing every two to four months, depending on usage.

Specifications you should check

Dimensions and opening

For a pool filter, measure the height, diameter and opening. The Bestway Filter Cartridge (II), for example, measures 104 x 136 mm and has a hole diameter of 50 mm. The Bestway Filter Cartridge (I) is smaller at 79 x 91 mm, with an opening of 26 mm.

For a cooker hood filter, the diameter or shape is particularly important. The Ciarra CBCF003 has a diameter of 175 mm, while the CBCF055 has a diameter of 130 mm. These two carbon filters are therefore not interchangeable without confirmation from the manufacturer.

Filter material

Many pool cartridges use pleated paper or polyester mesh around a plastic core. Pleats increase the available filter surface, while a sturdy core helps the filter retain its shape. Rinse a pool filter cartridge with a garden hose according to the product instructions. Do not use cleaning products or a pressure washer unless this is permitted.

A carbon cooker hood filter is a different type of filter. Activated carbon is used in the product descriptions of several Ciarra models to filter cooking smells and smoke. It is not a replacement for a grease filter and does not make a cooker hood maintenance-free.

Usage and replacement interval

A cartridge with a longer stated service life is not necessarily better value. Consider the conditions:

  • According to the product details, a Philips Quick Clean Pod cartridge CC16/50 provides approximately 30 cleaning cycles per cartridge or up to three months of use.
  • According to the product description, the Bestway Type II cartridge should be replaced every four weeks with intensive use.
  • For Bestway Type IV/B and Type III-A/C, rinsing with a garden hose and replacing after approximately two weeks is given as a guideline, depending on usage.
  • A HEPA replacement filter for an air purifier must be matched to the specific appliance model. Also check whether it is a combined filter with activated carbon.

Replacing a filter safely and without causing damage

Always follow your appliance’s instruction manual. With a pool pump, switch off the pump and unplug it from the mains before opening the housing. Fit the new cartridge correctly and never operate the pump without a filter.

With a Philips Quick Clean Pod, insert the cartridge into the designated compartment until it clicks into place. Store unused cartridges upright in a cool, dry place. The liquid is not intended for consumption and must be kept out of reach of children.

With a cooker hood filter, first check whether it is a grease filter or a carbon filter. A carbon filter is generally replaced rather than washed, unless your model’s manual states otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about replacement filters

How do I know which replacement filter I need?

Note down the brand, model number and type of your appliance. Then compare the dimensions, opening, filter shape and stated flow rate. If in doubt, measure the old filter and consult the product manual.

How often should I replace a filter cartridge?

This varies depending on the appliance and how it is used. Pool filters may need replacing every two to four weeks with intensive use. According to the product details, a Philips cartridge provides approximately 30 cleaning cycles. The Ciarra product descriptions mentioned recommend replacing a carbon cooker hood filter every two to four months, depending on usage.

Can I use a compatible replacement filter?

Only if the dimensions and product specifications match and the filter is designed for your model. “Compatible” does not automatically mean universal. Always check the official model reference, measurements and installation instructions before ordering.
