Choosing a QWERTY US keyboard: how to find the right layout for work, programming and gaming

A QWERTY US keyboard can be a practical choice for Dutch users who work with American software, programme or are used to a fixed ANSI layout. However, not every keyboard with “QWERTY” in the product title is the same. The wrong layout, a missing numeric keypad or overly loud typing noise may only become apparent after purchase.

Pay particular attention to these three pitfalls:

  • QWERTY does not automatically mean US ANSI. Some product pages use QWERTY and US International interchangeably. Check the physical layout, number of keys and the shape of the Enter and Shift keys.
  • Compact means fewer keys. A 60% or 75% compact keyboard saves space, but often has no numeric keypad and sometimes no dedicated function keys.
  • “Mechanical feel” does not always mean mechanical switches. A membrane keyboard can imitate a mechanical keystroke. If you want to replace switches or are looking for a specific typing experience, search explicitly for mechanical or optical switches.

What should you look for in a QWERTY US keyboard?

1. Check the layout: US ANSI or US International

A physical US ANSI keyboard usually has 104 keys in a full-size model and a recognisable American key layout. The long Shift keys, compact Enter key and positioning of punctuation marks differ from many European layouts.

The term US International keyboard often refers to an American layout in which the operating system supports additional international characters. This is not exactly the same as the physical shape of the keyboard. After connecting it, also check the language settings in Windows or macOS:

  1. Open the language or keyboard settings.
  2. For example, add “English (United States) – International” if you need dead keys and accents.
  3. Test punctuation marks, the @ symbol, colon and quotation marks.
  4. Remove unused layouts to prevent unexpected characters while typing.

For programming, the physical position of symbols is particularly important. For Dutch-language office work, US International can be useful if you regularly enter accented characters.

2. Choose the format based on your work

The main formats are:

  • Full-size keyboard: usually includes a numeric keypad, function keys and arrow keys. Useful for administration, spreadsheets and office work.
  • TKL or 80%: leaves out the numeric keypad, creating more room for the mouse.
  • 75%: generally includes arrow keys and a compact function row, while taking up less desk space.
  • 60% compact keyboard: approximately 61 keys. Functions and arrow keys often work via an Fn combination.

A keyboard with a numeric keypad is a sensible choice if you enter figures every day. Gamers and users with a small desk may benefit from a compact keyboard instead.

3. Compare switches, noise levels and connectivity

A mechanical keyboard uses individual switches beneath the keys. Linear switches generally feel smooth and consistent, while clicky switches produce a clearly audible click. A membrane model usually has a simpler construction and can be comfortable for quiet office work.

Also consider the connection:

  • A USB keyboard does not need batteries and provides a reliable wired connection.
  • A wireless keyboard with a USB receiver usually works through an available USB port.
  • A Bluetooth keyboard is convenient for laptops, tablets and multiple devices, but check that your device supports Bluetooth.
  • Tri-mode models often combine USB, Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity.

An RGB keyboard provides lighting and sometimes programmable effects. This can be useful in a dark room, but lighting generally increases energy consumption on wireless models. Also check whether the lighting is controlled using the keys or software.

Practical checks before purchase

Use this short checklist before ordering a model:

  • Does it explicitly state QWERTY US, US ANSI or US International?
  • Does the keyboard have a numeric keypad if you enter lots of figures?
  • Are the switches mechanical, optical or membrane?
  • Is the model wired, wireless via a receiver or Bluetooth?
  • Does the layout work with your Windows, Mac or ChromeOS settings?
  • Do the lighting, macros and profiles depend on software?
  • Is the cable detachable, and how long is it?
  • Has “spill-resistant” been interpreted correctly? This does not mean that the keyboard can be submerged.

Frequently asked questions about a QWERTY US keyboard

Will a QWERTY US keyboard work with a Dutch laptop?

Yes, usually, provided the laptop has a suitable USB port or Bluetooth. You may need to select the correct keyboard layout in Windows or macOS. The key legends and software setting must match.

Is a mechanical keyboard always loud?

No. The noise level depends on the type of switch, the keycaps and the construction. Clicky switches generally make more noise. Linear switches and some membrane models can be quieter. A quiet keyboard such as the Trust Ody II uses low-profile, quiet membrane keys according to the product information.

What does a wireless keyboard cost to run?

That depends on the battery type and lighting. A model with standard batteries does not need a charging cable, but the batteries will eventually need replacing. A rechargeable Bluetooth keyboard uses electricity to recharge. RGB lighting can increase energy consumption. Therefore, check whether the lighting can be switched off and whether the keyboard has an on/off switch.
