Choosing protective sports gear: how to buy safely and find the right fit for every sport

Buying a helmet or a set of protectors may seem straightforward, until you have to choose between dozens of models, sizes and safety claims. A low price tells you little about fit, while extra features such as a light, visor or magnetic goggles don’t automatically mean a product is right for your activity.

Most common buying mistakes come down to three pitfalls:

  • Choosing the wrong type: a cycle helmet isn’t designed to be a motorcycle helmet, and skating protectors aren’t automatically suitable for motorcycling.
  • Getting the size wrong: a helmet that wobbles or protectors that shift out of place offer less practical protection while you move.
  • Misunderstanding certification: terms such as “impact-resistant” or “professional” are no substitute for a verifiable standards reference.

Use these checks to choose protective sports gear for cycling, mountain biking, skating, BMX, scooters and motorcycling with confidence.

1. Check the sport and level of protection first

Choose a product based on the activity, not just its appearance. For commuting and recreational cycling, a well-fitting cycle helmet with ventilation is often sufficient for its intended use. For mountain biking on technical trails, a mountain bike helmet with extra coverage at the back or a full-face model may be better suited to the conditions.

Check which standard is listed in the product information for a cycle helmet. EN1078 is a European standard for helmets used for cycling, skateboarding and roller skating. For children’s helmets for cycling, skating or scootering, it’s worth checking that EN1078 and a CE marking are clearly listed for the product. A model described as tested to EN1078 and CE-certified, such as certain ACTION helmets, is specifically intended for these activities.

Motorcyclists need a different category of helmet. Check that the motorcycle helmet lists ECE R 22.06. This is not the same standard as the one for a cycle helmet. A motorcycle helmet with a visor, such as the MY 935 Modular Flip-Up, is designed for motorcycling and, according to the product information, lists ECE R 22.06. Always check the current product page and sizing before ordering.

2. Fit and adjustment aren’t minor details

Measure your head circumference with a flexible tape measure, about one to two centimetres above your eyebrows. Compare the result with the size guide for your chosen product. A size L from one brand may fit differently from a size L from another.

A well-adjusted helmet:

  • sits level and covers your forehead without blocking your vision;
  • doesn’t move noticeably when you gently shake your head from side to side;
  • has a chin strap that fastens securely without feeling uncomfortably tight;
  • stays stable when you cycle, skate or ride a scooter.

A cycle helmet with a light can improve visibility in low-light conditions, but it doesn’t replace good bike lights or lighting on your bicycle. According to the product description, the DKONI HS-086 has a removable, USB-rechargeable rear light with two modes and an estimated battery life of around three to five hours. So, consider whether you’re happy to charge the light regularly.

Knee and elbow protectors should stay in the right place. Adjustable nylon straps and hook-and-loop fastenings are practical, but only if you tighten them enough. Loose wrist guards can shift out of place, while straps that are too tight can make them uncomfortable to wear.

3. Check construction, certification and care

The materials give you an initial idea of how a product is made:

  • PC or ABS: a hard outer shell used in many helmets and protectors.
  • EPS or EPP: foam on the inside that forms part of the construction.
  • EVA: soft, shock-absorbing foam often used in knee, elbow and motorcycle protection.
  • Ventilation openings: important for airflow on longer rides.
  • Adjustable lining: helps you fine-tune the fit.

A MIPS cycle helmet includes a system designed, according to the product description, to reduce rotational forces in certain impacts. This is a product specification, not a guarantee that injury will be prevented. The OutdoorMaster Gem MIPS I is listed as having 25 ventilation openings, an adjustable fit system and two removable liners.

Replace a helmet after a serious fall or collision, even if there’s no visible damage. Before each use, check protectors for cracks, deformation, loose straps and worn fastenings. Follow the care instructions: many products can only be cleaned with a damp cloth or by hand. Heat, harsh cleaning products and prolonged exposure to sunlight can damage materials.

Frequently asked questions about protective sports gear

How long does a cycle helmet last?

Replace a cycle helmet after a serious impact, even if there’s no crack in the outer shell. Also check the straps, lining and shell regularly for signs of wear. The recommended lifespan varies by manufacturer and material, so follow the instructions on the product page and store the helmet somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.

Does every cyclist need a MIPS cycle helmet?

MIPS is an additional design feature intended, according to product information, to help manage certain rotational impacts. It doesn’t replace the right size, a good fit or safe behaviour on the road. If you’re considering a MIPS cycle helmet, first check that it feels comfortable and is suitable for the type of cycling you do.

Can I use the same protection for cycling and motorcycling?

Not automatically. A cycle helmet, children’s helmet or skate helmet isn’t designed to be used as a motorcycle helmet. Motorcycle protection requires products specifically described for motorcycling, such as a motorcycle helmet with the appropriate standards reference, a protective motorcycle jacket or motorcycle trousers with protectors. Always check the intended use, size and care instructions before using a product.
