Choosing outdoor sun protection: how to compare hats, glasses, parasols and UV umbrellas

Outdoor sun protection involves more than simply taking a pair of sunglasses with you. When cycling, walking, gardening or sitting on the patio, heat, glare, wind and sudden rain can also play a part. A product may look appealing because of terms such as “UV400”, “UPF 2000+” or “wind-resistant”, but these labels do not always tell you how practical the product will be in your situation.

Many disappointing purchases result from three recurring pitfalls:

  • A protection claim without context: UPF 50+ or UPF 2000+ says something about the stated protection offered by the material, but it does not automatically indicate coverage for your neck, face or legs.
  • The wrong size: a small, foldable sun umbrella is convenient when you are out and about, but provides less shade than a large 3 × 4-metre cantilever parasol.
  • Too little attention to stability and maintenance: a parasol with a cross base needs additional ballast. A wet UV umbrella that is put away immediately may also deteriorate more quickly.

The most important specifications for outdoor sun protection

1. Check both the protection rating and the coverage

For clothing and hats, UPF refers to the amount of UV radiation that, according to the product information, passes through the fabric. A sun hat with UV protection may therefore be more suitable than an ordinary cap, especially if its brim also covers the face and neck.

The Beneunder sun visor in this selection states UPF 50+, a wide brim and integrated face coverage. According to the product description, the fabric is solution-dyed and designed to protect the face and neck. Also check the size: this model is suitable for a head circumference of approximately 55 to 58 cm.

Umbrellas sometimes carry much higher ratings, such as UPF 2000+ sun protection. This is a brand claim from the product information, not a general European standard for all umbrellas. You should therefore also consider the diameter, number of layers and how you intend to use the umbrella.

2. Choose the right glasses for your activity

For cycling, UV400 cycling glasses with a secure fit are practical. UV400 indicates protection against UV radiation up to 400 nanometres, but always check that the claim is clearly stated in the product information.

According to the product specifications, the Revoray X3 models feature an integrated PC lens, a TR90 frame, a weight of approximately 30 grams and a rubber nose pad with non-slip earpieces. The single-piece lens provides a wide field of vision. This is particularly useful when you regularly look diagonally ahead or to the side while cycling.

Do you wear prescription glasses? In that case, polarised clip-on sunglasses may be more practical than ordinary sunglasses. According to the product description, the Xiaomi model is designed to be worn over prescription glasses and has polarised lenses. Polarisation can reduce glare from wet roads, windows and water, but check in advance that the shape fits over your frames.

3. Pay attention to dimensions, ballast and fabric when choosing a parasol

For a patio, the difference between an ordinary centre-pole parasol and a large cantilever parasol is clear: with a side pole, the space beneath the canopy remains unobstructed. A 3 × 4-metre parasol provides plenty of shade for a lounge area or garden table, but it also requires more space, assembly and stability.

Pay attention to the following points:

  • Canopy: a 280 g/m² canopy with a PA coating is described in the product information as water-repellent and easy to maintain.
  • Frame: aluminium is lightweight and does not rust in the same way as untreated steel, but the structure must be properly secured.
  • Adjustment: 360° rotation and left-to-right tilting help you move the shade with the sun.
  • Ballast: a cross base on its own is not a complete weighting system. The specified 3 × 4-metre models are supplied without ballast plates or water-filled parasol weights.
  • Wind: no parasol should be left open unattended in strong winds. “Wind-resistant parasol” refers to construction features, not a guarantee that the canopy will remain safe in all conditions.

Frequently asked questions about outdoor sun protection

Is UPF 50+ sufficient for outdoor use?

UPF 50+ is often used for clothing and textiles with a high stated level of UV protection. In addition to the rating, check the fit, the areas of the body covered and the condition of the fabric. A wide brim, face coverage or long sleeves can make more practical difference than the number on the label alone.

Can I also use a UV umbrella in the rain?

That depends on the canopy and the product description. Models with a water-repellent coating are designed for both sunshine and light rain. Allow an umbrella to dry completely after use before folding it away. In strong winds, it is advisable to close the umbrella, even if the manufacturer states that it has wind-resistant features.

How long does a parasol last?

Its lifespan depends on the canopy, frame, weather conditions and maintenance. Close a parasol in windy conditions, use sufficient ballast and store it somewhere dry when it will not be needed for an extended period. A water-repellent parasol will also remain usable for longer when dirt and moisture are not left in the coating for prolonged periods.
