Choosing open-ear earbuds: how to find a comfortable model for sport, work and life on the go

Open-ear earbuds are designed for people who want to listen to music, podcasts or phone calls without blocking the ear canal. This makes them appealing to commuters, walkers, runners and home workers. However, not every model is suitable for every situation. A clip may feel too loose, the sound may disappoint in busy traffic, and a long battery-life claim may only apply when the charging case is included.

The following points will help you assess marketing claims more effectively and choose a model that suits your everyday use.

Common pitfalls when choosing open-ear earbuds

1. “Noise cancellation” does not always mean less background noise

With open-ear earbuds, your ear remains partially uncovered. That is precisely the purpose of this design, but it also means that active noise cancellation works differently from on in-ear earbuds. Some manufacturers mention noise cancellation for phone calls or specific listening modes. This does not automatically mean that all traffic noise or music-related background noise will be filtered out.

Check whether the feature applies to microphones for calls, music playback or both. According to Sony’s own information, some LinkBuds Clip models use AI noise cancellation for calls and offer different playback modes. The precise performance depends on your surroundings, device and settings.

2. An open design is no substitute for staying alert

Open-ear headphones and bone-conduction headphones allow some surrounding sound through. This can be useful in the office or while out walking, but it does not automatically make cycling, driving or working with machinery safe. The safety information supplied with several products states that you should not use these devices while driving, cycling or in situations where your full attention is required.

Only use them where it is responsible to do so, and keep the volume at a moderate level. Awareness of your surroundings still depends on your behaviour, the fit and the volume level.

3. Battery life is not always quoted in the same way

A model advertised with “long battery life” may offer 7 to 9 hours per earbud, while a total of 28 or 37 hours may include the charging case. Therefore, check both figures:

  • Playback time per charge: important for a working day, long walk or training session.
  • Total playback time with the case: useful when you will not have immediate access to a power socket.
  • Fast charging: handy if you are short on time before heading out.
  • Charging port: USB-C is now commonplace, but check what is included in the package.

Important specifications to check

Fit: clip-on, ear hook or open-ear

Clip-on earbuds sit on the outside of the ear. They do not block the ear canal, which can make them more comfortable for extended use. However, the fit varies from one ear shape to another. A silicone ear hook can provide extra support during sport, while a flexible open-ring design may put less pressure on the ear.

Pay attention to the weight of each earbud, the shape of the clip and whether additional stabilising components are included. A lightweight construction is not automatically comfortable: the pressure at a single point on the ear often determines how they feel to wear.

Water resistance: IPX4 is limited

IPX4 means that, according to the stated classification, a product is protected against splashing water from different directions. This may be suitable for sweat or light rain. It does not mean that the earbuds are suitable for submersion, showering or prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

A product with IPX4 can therefore work as sports earbuds in light conditions, but store the earbuds somewhere dry after use. Also check whether the charging case has the same protection; this is not always the case.

Sound and calls

Open-ear earbuds produce sound close to the ear without sealing the ear canal. As a result, the bass may sound less prominent than with in-ear models, particularly outdoors or at a busy station. A larger driver, equaliser or dedicated sound mode may improve the experience, but always check which features are actually listed in the product specifications.

For calls, the number of microphones, wind protection and software-based noise filtering are more relevant than the term “AI” alone. According to soundcore AeroClip’s own product information, it features four beamforming microphones, wind-protective mesh and AI functions for calls. These are product specifications, not a guarantee of clear speech in every noisy environment.

Frequently asked questions about open-ear earbuds

Are open-ear earbuds suitable for running?

That depends on the fit, weight and water resistance. A clip or silicone ear hook can provide extra support while you are moving. For running in light rain, IPX4 may be suitable, but this classification does not protect against submersion or heavy rain. Do not use earbuds in situations where you need your full attention for traffic.

How long do wireless Bluetooth earbuds last?

Their lifespan depends on battery wear, charging habits, moisture and physical stress. Playback time per charge generally decreases as the battery gets older. Store the earbuds in the case, avoid heat and clean them with a soft, dry cloth. Also check whether firmware updates and replacement parts are available.

Are open-ear earbuds more comfortable than in-ear earbuds?

For users who do not want pressure in the ear canal, open-ear earbuds may feel more comfortable. However, wearing comfort varies according to ear shape and design. An ear clip may put pressure in one place, while an open-ring model distributes pressure differently. Therefore, do not focus only on the word “comfortable”; also consider the weight, material, fit and whether the model can be adjusted properly.
