How to choose wireless earbuds with noise cancelling: avoid making the wrong choice

Wireless earbuds with noise cancelling may look similar, but they can differ considerably in fit, battery life, water resistance and phone compatibility. A low price does not automatically mean a model is unsuitable, while a well-known brand name is no guarantee of comfort for every ear.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • Confusing ANC and ENC: active noise cancellation is designed to reduce ambient noise. ENC usually refers to noise reduction during phone calls using the microphones. A model with ENC for calls does not necessarily offer earbuds with ANC for music.
  • Misreading battery figures: the playback time of a single earbud is not the same as the total playback time including the charging case. Using ANC, the volume level, codec and phone calls can also affect actual battery life.
  • Interpreting an IP rating too broadly: IPX4 or IP54 means protection against splashing water under certain conditions. It does not mean you can submerge the earbuds or get the charging case wet.

Which specifications really matter?

1. ANC, transparency mode and microphones

Active Noise Cancelling, abbreviated to ANC, uses microphones and electronics to reduce ambient noise. Its effectiveness depends on the fit, the technology used and the type of sound. Low, consistent noise on a train, plane or in an office is different from voices or sudden traffic noise.

A transparency mode lets ambient sound through. This is useful at a station, during a conversation or when walking outdoors. Do not use noise cancelling in situations where you need to hear traffic or warning signals.

For calls, the number of microphones, wind filtering and noise-reduction software are all relevant considerations. A product description may mention “clear calls”, but treat this as a brand claim. According to Soundcore’s product description, for example, the Liberty 4 Pro has six microphones. This is a verifiable product specification, but it is no guarantee of the same call quality in every environment.

2. Fit and comfort

With true wireless earbuds, both earbuds are completely independent of each other. The fit affects not only comfort, but also the seal and therefore the performance of passive isolation and ANC.

So check:

  • Whether several sizes of silicone ear tips are included.
  • Whether the model has a stable shape or secure-fit wings.
  • Whether you prefer a closed in-ear earbud or an open design.
  • Whether the weight of each earbud is clearly stated.
  • Whether the controls remain easy to use while walking, travelling or exercising.

Open-ear models, such as clip-on earbuds, allow more contact with your surroundings but block out less sound. They are therefore not the same as wireless earbuds with noise cancelling.

3. Battery, charging and compatibility

Compare battery life on a like-for-like basis: with ANC switched on or off, per earbud or including the charging case. A fast-charging function can be useful when you have little time while out and about. USB-C is now a practical standard for many Bluetooth earbuds. Some models also support Qi wireless charging.

Bluetooth 5.3 or 5.4 mainly indicates the connection standard used. Also check the codecs and features. AAC and SBC are widely supported by iPhone and Android; LDAC is not available on every device or in every app. Multipoint is useful if you want to connect to a laptop and smartphone at the same time.

Frequently asked questions about wireless earbuds with noise cancelling

Does noise cancelling work with every phone?

Yes, Bluetooth earbuds can generally be paired with both iPhone and Android devices. Extra features, such as an equaliser, firmware updates or advanced controls, may depend on the app and operating system. Before buying, check that the functions you want are available on your phone.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Battery life per charge varies depending on the model and settings. Battery capacity gradually decreases over charging cycles. Store the earbuds in the charging case, avoid heat and use a suitable USB-C charger. Consumers’ statutory conformity rights in the EU remain separate from the stated battery life.

Are wireless earbuds suitable for sports?

That depends on the fit and IP rating. IPX4, IP54 or IPX5 may offer protection against splashing water, but always check the product specifications. Sweat, rain and submersion are not the same thing. Also choose a model that stays securely in place, and set ANC or transparency mode appropriately for your surroundings.
