How to choose wireless headphones with noise cancelling: a practical buying guide

Wireless headphones with noise cancelling can be ideal on the train, in the office or during a long flight. However, a big number on the packaging does not tell you everything. A high dB rating, long battery life or promise of “premium sound” may mean little without further context about how you use them day to day.

The most important question is therefore not which model makes the biggest promises, but which one suits your smartphone, listening habits and wearing comfort.

Three common pitfalls when choosing noise-cancelling headphones

1. A high dB claim does not mean that all noise disappears

Active noise cancellation, or ANC, works mainly against constant low-frequency sounds. Think of the hum of an aeroplane, train or air conditioning. Voices, sudden noises and high frequencies may still be audible. Fit also makes a difference: over-ear headphones with well-sealed ear cushions block out more ambient noise on their own than a loose-fitting model.

Claims such as “up to -45 dB” or “up to 46 dB” are product claims. According to Baseus’s own product description, the EH10 NC uses hybrid ANC of up to -45 dB; according to Soundcore’s own product description, the A30i can provide up to 46 dB of noise cancellation. These figures are not automatically directly comparable. You should therefore also check the design, seal and available transparency mode.

2. Maximum battery life often applies with ANC switched off

Manufacturers generally state the longest battery life under specific conditions, such as with noise cancelling switched off and at a particular volume. The Sony WH-CH720N product description states up to 50 hours without ANC and 35 hours with ANC. For the Sony WH-1000XM5, up to 40 hours without noise cancelling and 30 hours with ANC are specified.

Always check battery life with noise cancelling switched on. For daily commuting, 20 to 30 hours may be sufficient. For travellers or users who want to charge as infrequently as possible, headphones with long battery life are more practical.

3. “For calls” means little without microphone details

Headphones may have a microphone, but that does not guarantee clear conversations in windy conditions or on busy streets. Look at the number of microphones, wind-noise reduction and whether multipoint is supported. Multipoint means that the Bluetooth headphones can be connected to, for example, a laptop and smartphone at the same time.

Noise-cancelling headphones are not always suitable for every situation either. Use transparency mode when you need to hear traffic, announcements or colleagues.

Which specifications are important?

Over-ear, on-ear or in-ear

Over-ear headphones surround the ear and usually offer a secure fit and additional passive sound isolation. On the other hand, this type can feel larger and warmer. In-ear headphones with noise cancelling are compact and easy to carry around, but comfort varies considerably from one ear to another.

When choosing earbuds, look for several sizes of silicone ear tips. With the wrong size, not only does comfort suffer, but ANC performance may also become less predictable.

Bluetooth version and codecs

Bluetooth 5.2, 5.3 or 5.4 mainly indicates the wireless connection and energy efficiency. The overall experience also depends on your phone and the supported audio codecs. SBC and AAC are widely compatible. According to the product information, LDAC can transfer more audio data, but your phone, settings and connection must support it.

For Apple users, compatibility with iOS is important. Android users may be able to access more settings through the brand’s app. Also check whether multipoint is actually supported on your devices.

Comfort, weight and controls

Lightweight wireless headphones can be more comfortable during long listening sessions. The Sony WH-CH720N is listed in the product information as weighing 192 grams. Also check:

  • how adjustable the headband is;
  • the pressure from the ear cushions;
  • the amount of space around your ears;
  • physical buttons versus touch controls;
  • whether they fold and whether a storage case is included;
  • USB-C charging and any fast-charging function.

A model that sounds technically impressive but becomes uncomfortable after an hour is not a practical choice for everyday use.

Frequently asked questions

Does noise cancelling work without Bluetooth?

On many models, ANC only works when the headphones are switched on. Music can sometimes also be played via a cable, but the exact operation varies from one product to another. Check whether ANC, wired audio and battery usage are supported separately.

How long do wireless headphones last?

Their lifespan depends on battery wear, hinges, ear cushions and everyday use. A built-in lithium-ion battery loses capacity over time. Store the headphones in a dry place, charge them with a suitable USB-C cable and avoid prolonged exposure to heat. Ear cushions can be replaced on some models; check this before buying.

How much does a noise-cancelling headset cost per month to run?

The energy costs of charging are generally low. More important factors are the purchase price, any replacement ear tips or ear cushions, and the fact that many ANC models have a built-in battery. So do not compare the price alone: also consider battery life, warranty and the availability of accessories.
