Choosing a multisport cycling helmet: what to look for when cycling, scooting and skating

A multisport cycling helmet can be useful if one helmet is used for cycling, scooting, skateboarding, BMX or roller skating. However, not every helmet is automatically suitable for every activity. A model that feels comfortable on a bike may be less suitable for intensive BMX use, for example. Marketing terms such as “impact-resistant” or “360° protection” can also create a misleading impression if the size, fastening system and safety standards have not been checked.

For parents of children aged 5 to 13, growth and maintenance are also important considerations. A helmet that becomes too tight after a few months, or whose lining cannot be washed, is less practical to use. Adult recreational cyclists and skaters often focus instead on ventilation, adjustability and a model that can be used for several sports.

Three common pitfalls when choosing a multisport cycling helmet

1. Choosing based only on age or appearance

Age labels such as “for children” or “for adults” are only a first indication. Head circumference and shape determine whether a helmet fits properly. Measure the circumference horizontally, around two centimetres above the eyebrows, and compare it with the product’s size chart.

A children’s cycling helmet should therefore not be chosen based on age alone. An adult cycling helmet must also fit properly around the head, without pressure points or excess movement.

2. Mistaking an adjustment dial for a good fit

An adjustable cycling helmet is practical, but an adjustment dial alone does not make a helmet a good fit. The helmet should sit low and level on the head. The chin strap should fit securely without feeling tight. Also check that the helmet does not move forwards, backwards or sideways when the wearer moves their head.

Multiple liners can help accommodate small differences in head circumference. They cannot replace the correct size.

3. Assuming the same level of protection for every sport

A skateboard helmet, scooter helmet and BMX helmet may look similar in shape, but the recommended use varies from product to product. Pay attention to the activities specified by the manufacturer. A standard multisport helmet is not automatically intended for extreme jumps, motorised vehicles or situations involving an increased risk of facial impact.

A full-face cycling helmet provides more coverage around the chin and face when used in full-face mode, but it is heavier and often warmer than a half-open model. Choose this version based on how it will be used, not just because of its appearance.

Important specifications to check

Fit and size

A well-fitting model has an adjustable headband or adjustment dial, an adjustable chin strap and a fastening system that is easy to secure. Various size ranges are available for children in the age group mentioned above. The RoyalBaby Everest, for example, specifies an adjustment range of 52,05 to 55,88 cm. The RoyalBaby full-face models specify a range of 20 to 23 inch, or approximately 50,8 to 58,4 cm.

Always measure the head first. A helmet bought too large “to grow into” may shift during a fall.

Materials and safety standards

Many models in this selection combine a hard outer shell, such as ABS or PC, with an EPS inner layer. According to the product descriptions, these materials are designed to absorb impacts and keep the construction sturdy. This is the manufacturer’s description and does not guarantee that every impact will be absorbed.

Before buying, check which European standards and CE information are shown on the product, packaging or documentation. EN 1078 is often mentioned for cycling helmets; check that the standard is suitable for the intended use. According to the product information, the OutdoorMaster Ibex is listed as complying with the US CPSC safety standard for children aged 5 and over. This does not automatically prove that the model complies with every European standard.

Ventilation, weight and maintenance

A lightweight cycling helmet can feel more comfortable during longer rides. According to the product information, the RoyalBaby Moon weighs 250 grams, while the RoyalBaby Everest weighs approximately 213 grams. Weight is only one factor, however. Also check the number of ventilation openings, the shape of the inner shell and whether the lining can be washed.

A cycling helmet with a removable lining is practical for children and athletes who regularly sweat. Hand-wash the lining according to the instructions and allow it to dry completely in the air. Clean the outer shell with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh cleaning products or remove any components.

Frequently asked questions about multisport cycling helmets

Is a multisport cycling helmet suitable for scooting and skateboarding?

That depends on the product description and the stated safety standards. Choose a model that explicitly lists scooting and skateboarding as recommended uses. Also check the size, fastening system and fit before every ride. Do not use a helmet for motorised vehicles unless this is specified.

How long can you use a cycling helmet for?

Replace a helmet immediately after a serious fall or collision, even if there is no visible damage. The product information for various models also recommends replacing them after approximately three to five years, as materials can deteriorate over time. Store the helmet in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.

How do you clean a cycling helmet with a removable lining?

Carefully remove the lining from the helmet and hand-wash it according to the instructions. Allow the components to dry completely in the air before putting them back. Wipe the shell with a soft, damp cloth. Adjust the helmet and check the chin strap again before using it.
