MIPS bike helmets for adults: how to choose the right helmet for every ride

A MIPS bike helmet for adults may seem straightforward to choose at first. However, small differences in fit, ventilation and intended use can make all the difference to how comfortable a helmet feels on your daily rides. A road cycling helmet is not automatically suitable for mountain biking, and a ski helmet is no substitute for a bike helmet.

As Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I filter out the most important product specifications and common marketing claims, so you can compare your options more effectively.

Three common pitfalls when buying a helmet

1. Focusing only on MIPS

According to product descriptions, MIPS is a system designed to help reduce harmful rotational forces on the head in certain angled impacts. This does not mean that a helmet prevents every type of collision, or that every MIPS helmet offers the same fit and protection.

So be sure to check:

  • The relevant safety standard for your intended use.
  • The size and adjustment range.
  • The quality of the chin strap and adjustment system.
  • Whether the helmet stays securely in place when you move your head.

2. Choosing a size based only on S, M or L

A size M bike helmet can fit differently from one brand or model to another. The same goes for a size L bike helmet. Measure your head circumference with a tape measure held horizontally, about two fingers’ width above your eyebrows. Then compare the measurement with the product’s size chart.

A helmet should fit snugly and evenly, without creating pressure points. The rear adjustment system should stay in place when you gently shake your head. The chin strap should sit under your jaw without pressing tightly against your throat.

3. Assuming extra features make a helmet suitable for everyone

A visor, lights or plenty of vents can be useful, but they are not right for every cyclist. A bike helmet with a visor can be handy in bright light, rain or on loose surfaces. For long rides, a well-ventilated bike helmet may be more important than an extra accessory.

Also consider what you’ll use it for:

  • A MIPS road cycling helmet is often lightweight and designed for road use.
  • A mountain bike helmet should stay securely in place on bumpy trails.
  • A commuter bike helmet may offer extra visibility or a rear light.
  • A recreational bike helmet is a versatile choice for everyday rides.
  • A MIPS ski helmet is designed for winter sports and usually has a warm lining and ear protection.

Important specifications to check before you buy

MIPS, outer shell and inner layer

Many models combine a polycarbonate outer shell with an EPS inner layer. Polycarbonate forms the hard outer shell, while EPS is designed to absorb impact energy in certain situations. Always check that the product description specifically mentions MIPS technology and that the helmet is supplied with all its components.

No helmet protects against every possible impact. Replace your helmet after a fall or collision, even if there is no visible damage.

Ventilation and comfort

Vents help air flow through the helmet, but more ventilation is not automatically more comfortable. In winter, a well-insulated lining may be more important. For a MIPS road cycling helmet, airflow channels and a low weight are often useful features. For a city helmet, a visor, lights or an easy-to-adjust fit may matter more.

Standards and intended use

Check the standard relevant to your activity. In Europe, bike helmets are generally marked CE EN 1078. Ski helmets may be marked CE EN 1077 and sometimes ASTM F2040. Check the product page and the markings on the helmet; don’t rely solely on the word “safe” in an advert.

Don’t use a bike helmet for skiing or a ski helmet for cycling. Their construction, ventilation and linings are designed for different conditions.

Frequently asked questions about MIPS bike helmets for adults

How do I know if a MIPS bike helmet fits properly?

Place the helmet level on your head, with the front sitting a few centimetres above your eyebrows. Adjust the rear dial first, then fit the chin strap. The helmet should not slide forwards, backwards or sideways when you gently move your head.

When should you replace a bike helmet?

Replace your helmet straight away after a collision or fall in which it has absorbed an impact. Also check the shell, EPS layer, straps and fastening regularly. Manufacturers sometimes recommend replacing a helmet every few years, as materials can deteriorate over time. Follow the guidance on the product page and from the manufacturer.

Does a MIPS helmet cost more to maintain?

The MIPS system does not normally involve separate maintenance costs. Clean the helmet with mild soap and water, allow removable linings to dry completely and avoid harsh chemicals. You will need to charge a rear light, and a removable lining may need replacing after extended use.
