Choosing LED lighting without making a costly mistake: a practical guide for every room

Buying a new light may seem straightforward, until the fitting does not fit, the light is too bright or an outdoor lamp starts working less effectively after a few showers. With LED lighting, making the right choice is about more than just the wattage. The fitting, light colour, brightness, moisture protection and controls all affect whether a lamp is suitable for your home.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • Confusing wattage with brightness: a 5-watt LED bulb is not automatically dim or bright. Check the number of lumens.
  • Buying the wrong fitting: E27, E14 and G9 fittings are not interchangeable. Check your existing bulb or fitting before ordering.
  • Using outdoor lighting without the right protection: an LED lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor areas. For a garden, patio or driveway, choosing a suitable IP rating is important.

The most important specifications for LED lamps

1. Fitting: E27, E14 or G9

The fitting determines whether the lamp will physically fit your light fixture.

  • E27 LED bulb: the wide screw fitting commonly found in ceiling lights, floor lamps and table lamps.
  • E14 LED bulb: a narrower screw fitting, often used in chandeliers, wall lights and smaller fixtures.
  • G9 LED bulb: a compact pin fitting for capsule or halogen bulbs. Check that the fixture is suitable for LED and that the dimensions match.

As well as the fitting, check the bulb’s diameter and height. A lamp may have the correct fitting technically, but still not fit beneath a shade.

2. Lumens and colour temperature

Lumens (lm) indicate how much light a lamp produces. For example, a Philips LED bulb with 470 lumens is suitable as a replacement for a traditional bulb with a similar light output. A reading lamp or work area may need more light, while a night light or decorative lighting may need less.

Colour temperature is expressed in Kelvin (K):

  • 2700 K: warm white light for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms.
  • 2800–3000 K: warm light for hallways, night lights and mood lighting.
  • 4000 K and above: more neutral or cooler light, often used for workspaces.

Bear in mind that “40 W” or “100 W” on LED bulbs often refers to the light output of a traditional incandescent bulb. The actual energy consumption is lower. Always check the actual wattage, number of lumens and energy label.

3. Indoor, outdoor and controls

IP20 is commonly used for dry indoor areas. A bathroom, covered outdoor area or outdoor light requires a fixture with a suitable IP rating. The rating indicates protection against dust and water; a higher number is not automatically needed for every application.

Also consider how you want to control the lighting:

  • Wall switch: simple and suitable for standard LED bulbs.
  • Dimmable: only use with a suitable dimmer and a bulb that is explicitly marked as dimmable.
  • Sensor: useful in a hallway, toilet, storage room or bedroom.
  • Smart controls: practical if you want to adjust the colour temperature, brightness or schedules via an app.
  • Solar: suitable for areas without a mains connection, but dependent on direct sunlight.

Practical buying tips for your home

  • Measure the fitting and check the shape of the old bulb.
  • For the living room, choose 2700 K in most cases if you want warm, atmospheric lighting.
  • Compare lumens rather than looking at wattage alone.
  • Check whether a bulb is dimmable before using it with a dimmer.
  • Only use an outdoor lamp according to its stated application and IP rating.
  • When buying a set of LED bulbs, check the number of bulbs included so that you do not buy too many or too few.
  • Switch off the power before replacing a bulb. For ceiling lights, follow the installation instructions and, if in doubt, have fixed electrical installations carried out by a qualified electrician.

Frequently asked questions about LED lighting

How long do LED bulbs last?

The stated lifespan varies from product to product. The range includes, for example, LED bulbs rated for 15.000 hours and an UltraEfficient model rated for 50.000 hours. These are manufacturer product specifications; the actual lifespan depends, among other things, on usage, heat dissipation and whether the fixture is suitable.

Are LED bulbs cheaper to run?

LED bulbs generally use fewer watts for a similar light output than traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs. For a realistic estimate, compare the wattage, number of hours the bulb is used and your electricity tariff. According to Philips’ own information, certain models mentioned use around 80 to 90 per cent less energy than comparable traditional bulbs. This is a brand claim for the products concerned, not a general guarantee for every LED bulb.

Which LED lighting is suitable for a bedroom?

Warm white LED bulbs of around 2700–3000 K are often a good fit for a bedroom. A sensor night light can be useful in a hallway or for visiting the toilet during the night. If you want to create different lighting moods, choose a dimmable bulb or a smart LED ceiling light that supports these features according to the product description.
