Choosing LED vehicle lighting: pay attention to the fitting, regulations and beam pattern

Switching from halogen to LED vehicle lighting may seem simple: remove the old bulb and fit the new one. In practice, problems often arise because of an incorrect fitting, a poorly defined beam pattern or lighting that is not permitted for use on public roads. This applies to cars, motorhomes, commercial vehicles and off-road vehicles, as well as bicycle and e-bike lighting.

Common pitfalls with LED car bulbs

1. A high lumen rating does not tell you everything

Product listings sometimes quote impressive figures such as 10,000 or 30,000 lumens. However, this figure does not tell you how the light is distributed on the road. A bulb may produce a great deal of light yet still create dark spots, scattered light or glare.

You should therefore also consider:

  • the shape of the beam;
  • the position of the LED chips;
  • the available space inside the headlamp housing;
  • headlamp alignment after installation.

2. “Plug-and-play” does not automatically mean a proper fit

A plug-and-play LED bulb may be electrically simple to connect, but that does not mean every car is compatible. Always check the fitting, such as H4, H7, H11, 9005/HB3, 9006/HB4 or D2S/R.

Some cars may also display error messages, flicker or develop an ineffective seal. A CANbus module or additional adapter may then be required. Also check that the bulb and fan physically fit beneath the dust cover.

3. Road approval is often interpreted too broadly

An LED bulb for off-road use is not automatically legal for road use. Check the product’s specific approval and intended application. ECE R37, ECE R112, ECE R10 and Germany’s StVZO have different meanings.

For a retrofit bulb, approval often applies only to specific vehicle models, lighting functions and countries. According to OSRAM’s product information, for the NIGHT BREAKER LED START H4, H7 and NIGHT BREAKER LED SMART H7, you should check the current compatibility list at osram.de/ledcheck. A product with ECE approval is therefore not suitable for every car without further checks.

Three specifications to check before buying

1. Fitting and vehicle compatibility

Start by checking the fitting of the existing bulb. This is usually listed in the manual, on the old bulb or in the vehicle details. An H4 bulb combines main beam and dipped beam, while H7 generally provides a single lighting function. H11 is used for certain headlamp and fog-light applications.

Then check:

  • 12 volt or 24 volt;
  • left- or right-hand-drive lighting function;
  • space behind the headlamp;
  • CANbus requirements;
  • the manufacturer’s compatibility list.

2. Beam pattern and colour temperature

A colour temperature of 6000K cool white creates a white, modern appearance. That is not the same as having good light distribution. For safe use, a clear cut-off for dipped beam and correct alignment are more important than simply having a white colour.

LED fog lamps require extra attention. Fog calls for a low, controlled beam. A lamp that mainly scatters a great deal of light upwards may be disruptive for you and other road users.

3. Cooling, protection and installation

LEDs often use less energy than halogen bulbs, but they still generate heat. It is therefore important to check the type of cooling:

  • passive aluminium cooling is quiet and has no moving parts;
  • a built-in fan can remove heat more quickly, but makes noise and requires sufficient space;
  • IP67 or IP68 provides information about protection against dust and water, but does not replace correctly sealing the headlamp.

With an LED light bar for cars, the mounting point, wiring harness, relay, earth connection and alignment are also important. A light bar must not interfere with the vehicle’s existing lighting and must be installed in accordance with local traffic regulations.

Installation and checks after purchase

Read the instructions before installation and allow the headlamp housing to cool down. When working on the vehicle’s lighting, disconnect the battery if required by the instructions. Do not touch the LED chips or electronic drivers, and check that the bulb is correctly seated in the fitting.

After installation:

  1. check both lighting functions;
  2. check the seal for protection against moisture;
  3. test for error messages and flickering;
  4. have the beam pattern checked;
  5. realign the headlamp if necessary.

With an external light bar, a fuse, relay and suitable cable cross-section are important. If you are unsure about the connection, have the installation carried out by someone familiar with vehicle electronics.

Frequently asked questions about LED vehicle lighting

Are LED car headlamps always permitted?

No. Approval depends on the fitting, vehicle, lighting function, country and specific approval. Some OSRAM retrofit bulbs require a check via the compatibility list. According to the product information, an H11 bulb with ECE R37 approval is treated differently from vehicle-specific H4 or H7 models. Always check the official documentation and the Dutch traffic regulations.

How long do LED car bulbs last?

Lifespan varies by product and operating conditions. Manufacturers sometimes quote tens of thousands of operating hours, but heat, vibration, moisture and the quality of the electronics affect real-world performance. In addition to the stated lifespan, look at the cooling system, warranty and protection against water and dust.

Do LED bulbs use less power than halogen?

According to OSRAM’s own claims, certain NIGHT BREAKER LED models use up to 60 per cent less energy than traditional halogen bulbs. This is a manufacturer claim under specified comparison conditions, not a guarantee for every vehicle or usage scenario. You should also always check the wattage and electrical compatibility of your car.
