LED lighting comes in many forms, from a compact lamp with a motion sensor to a smart light strip or outdoor wall light. The right choice depends on more than just colour and design. Where the lamp will be used, its power supply, brightness and protection against moisture also determine how well it performs in practice.
Many households face the same problems when buying lighting. A lamp may seem attractive because of its low price or long service life, but later turn out not to be bright enough, difficult to install or unsuitable for the intended space. These checks will help you avoid a purchase you regret.
Not every lamp labelled outdoor LED lighting can simply be installed in the open air. The IP rating indicates the level of protection a product offers against solid particles and water.
An IP44 lamp is not automatically resistant to heavy rain, jets of water or immersion. Always check the safety instructions as well, and install the lamp according to the specified conditions of use.
Wattage mainly tells you about energy consumption, not directly how much light you will get. For brightness, look at lumens. A compact cupboard light has different lighting requirements from a floor lamp next to an armchair or a light strip behind the television.
For functional lighting, such as in a kitchen or wardrobe, brightness and a suitable colour temperature are important. For ambient lighting in the living room or on the patio, a lower brightness combined with warm white light may feel more comfortable.
An LED light strip may seem easy to install, but check the following beforehand:
A fixed outdoor lamp connected to 230 volts must be installed professionally. A rechargeable LED lamp is more flexible, but needs to be charged regularly via USB. For cupboard lighting with a sensor, the sensor’s range is also relevant.
Colour temperature is expressed in Kelvin:
A product with multiple settings, such as LED cupboard lighting with a sensor, is practical when the same lamp is used at different times. A dimmable floor lamp gives you greater control in the living room, bedroom or on a covered patio.
A motion sensor lamp switches on automatically when movement is detected. Pay attention to the stated range and positioning. A PIR sensor does not work in the same way as a light sensor: the lamp responds to movement, but does not necessarily switch on only when it is dark.
For a rechargeable lamp, check the following:
A larger battery does not automatically mean that the lamp will last longer at every brightness setting. Actual usage time depends on factors including brightness, sensor use and charging conditions.
ABS plastic, metal, aluminium, glass and acrylic are commonly used in LED lamps. The material partly determines the weight, appearance and suitability for a particular environment. Also check the dimensions. A 40 cm lamp will not fit in every cupboard, while a 125 cm floor lamp needs a stable, level surface.
For smart Philips Hue lighting, the controls and compatibility are also important. According to Philips’ product description, the Hue Flux LED strip can be controlled via the Hue app and voice commands. The description also mentions support for Google Assistant, SmartThings and Matter, among others. Before buying, check whether these systems are compatible with your existing smart-home setup.
The selection below is based on verifiable features such as dimensions, light colour, battery, IP rating, controls and installation.
Why it suits this profile: This set includes two slim lamps for kitchen cupboards, shelves or wardrobes. They can be mounted with tape, without drilling.
The product specifications state three colour temperatures, a PIR range of 3–5 metres and a rechargeable battery. This makes it clear in advance how the lamp is operated and used.
41 LEDs, 1,100 mAh battery, USB charging and dimensions of 300 × 38 × 10 mm.
Why it suits this profile: This indoor strip is ideal for users who value ambient scenes, app control and integration with a smart-home platform.
The strip is intended for indoor use and has an IP20 rating. This prevents you from accidentally using it as outdoor LED lighting. The power supply must not be covered.
3-metre length, up to 1,200 lumens, can be cut at designated points and controlled via the Hue app or voice commands.
Why it suits this profile: The longer version is designed for wide cupboard shelves, worktops and wardrobes where a larger area of light is preferred.
The dimensions and number of LEDs are clearly stated. This allows you to check in advance whether 40 cm will fit the intended space and whether the light distribution is suitable for the application.
61 LEDs, three colour temperatures, 1,100 mAh battery and two lamps per pack.
Why it suits this profile: This cordless floor lamp is suitable for a patio, balcony or garden where no fixed power connection is available.
The IP54 rating and safety warning make it clear that the lamp must not be left in heavy rain or water. It still needs to be placed on a level surface.
125 cm tall, 340 lumens, 3,000 K warm white light, USB-A charging and an integrated three-stage touch dimmer.
For a façade or fence, an outdoor LED wall light with a GU10 fitting may be worth considering. The Brilliant Jelani has an IP44 rating, but is supplied without a light source and requires a fixed connection to be installed by a qualified electrician. For any replaceable LED lamp, always check the maximum wattage and fitting.
For festive decoration, string lighting is another option. The M.TK Meteor Shower Lights contains 192 coloured LEDs, eight hanging points and has an IP44 rating. This lighting is intended for indoor and outdoor decorative use. Use the supplied adapter and bear in mind that its protection against water is limited.
Consumption depends on the wattage and the number of hours the light is switched on. A low-wattage product uses less electricity per hour, but always compare the light output in lumens as well. For an accurate estimate, use: wattage × hours of use ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours.
Service life varies by product and conditions of use. Some specifications state, for example, 25,000 hours, but this is not a guarantee for every situation. Heat, moisture, charging cycles and the quality of the power supply can all affect practical service life.
A stick-on cupboard light, rechargeable LED lamp or standalone light strip is usually easy to install yourself if you follow the instructions. For a fixed 230-volt lamp, such as an outdoor wall light, installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with local regulations.
We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.
