Choosing LED lighting without costly mistakes: a practical guide for indoors, gardens and patios

LED lighting is now available for almost every application: from a simple LED ceiling light to smart lighting with app control, RGB light bars, solar lighting and an LED string light for the patio. With such a wide range to choose from, comparing products is essential. A low price or an impressive number of colours does not necessarily indicate whether a product is suitable for your space.

Common pitfalls when choosing LED lighting

1. Looking only at wattage

Wattage mainly indicates how much electrical power a lamp uses. The amount of light is measured in lumens. Depending on the design and light source, a 10-watt lamp can therefore perform quite differently from another 10-watt lamp.

When making a purchase, pay attention to:

  • Lumens: the total light output.
  • Watts: the nominal power.
  • Colour temperature: measured in kelvin, for example warm white at around 3000K.
  • CRI or Ra: the colour rendering. A higher value can make colours appear more natural.

For example, an LED ceiling light with 2700 lumens is suitable for a larger room than a decorative lamp with 100 or 200 lumens. The latter is mainly intended as accent lighting.

2. Confusing RGB with adjustable white light

RGB LED lighting uses red, green and blue light channels to create colours. This gives you mood lighting, but not automatically a comfortable warm or cool white light. For that, you need CCT: adjustable colour temperature.

RGB+CCT lighting combines both functions. You can use warm white while having dinner, for example, and switch to a coloured setting for a party. Check whether RGB and CCT can be adjusted separately, and whether dimming works via a remote control, app or Bluetooth.

3. Interpreting an IP rating too broadly

The IP code is important for outdoor use. The first digit refers to protection against solid particles; the second digit refers to moisture and water.

  • IP20: intended for dry indoor areas.
  • IP44 outdoor lighting: protected against splashing water, but not against immersion or powerful water jets.
  • IP65 solar lighting: according to the product description, offers greater protection against dust and water jets. This still does not mean that the lamp can be placed underwater.

Also pay attention to the plug, cable, connection and positioning. A splash-resistant lamp is not automatically suitable if the adapter is left unprotected on the ground.

Important specifications to check in advance

Light colour and control

For living rooms and bedrooms, adjustable white tones are often more practical than RGB colours alone. In a garden or party setting, RGB functions may be more important. Smart LED lamps work via Bluetooth lighting, Wi-Fi or a separate bridge, for example. Check:

  1. Whether the lamp works without a bridge.
  2. Whether app control requires an account.
  3. Whether Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit or SmartThings is supported.
  4. Whether local control continues to work when the internet connection is lost.

A Philips Hue starter kit uses a bridge for advanced control and automation. This offers more possibilities, but also requires additional equipment and has a higher entry price.

Installation and power supply

Check the dimensions, cable length and mounting method before ordering. A ceiling light must be connected to a suitable mains connection; switch off the power during installation. A spike spotlight is easier to position, but cables can create a trip hazard on a patio or alongside a path.

With solar lighting, the position of the panel is crucial. Shade, short winter days and dirt on the panel can affect charging time and operating duration. So do not look only at the stated battery life, but also at:

  • battery capacity;
  • charging time;
  • length of the cable between the panel and the lamp;
  • whether the panel can be angled towards the sun.

Lifespan, warranty and replaceability

A stated lifespan, such as 25,000 or 30,000 hours, is a product specification and not a guarantee that every lamp will last exactly that long. With integrated LED modules, the light source is often not replaceable. Always check the warranty terms and keep your purchase details.

The selection below includes products for different applications. The assessment is based on the listed specifications, features and installation information.

Frequently asked questions about LED lighting

How many lumens do I need for a room?

That depends on the size, function and desired atmosphere. General lighting requires a higher light output than a cupboard, alcove or decorative corner. Use lumens as your first point of comparison, then look at the beam angle, colour temperature and positioning.

How long does LED lighting last?

Many products state a lifespan of, for example, 25,000 hours. This is a stated product specification, not a fixed guarantee. Heat, moisture, switching frequency and the quality of the power supply can all have an impact. With integrated lighting, it is advisable to check in advance whether the light source can be replaced.

How much does LED lighting cost to run?

Running costs depend on the power, operating time and electricity price. A simple calculation is: power in kilowatts × operating hours × electricity tariff. With smart lighting, standby consumption from the bridge, adapter or Wi-Fi equipment may also count. So check the stated wattage, rather than looking only at the colour or app functions.
