LED lighting comes in many forms: from a small LED string light for the living room to smart garden lights controlled via an app. This wide choice can make comparing products difficult. A product may look appealing, yet prove impractical because of a cable that is too short, an unsuitable IP rating or a power supply that does not work for the location where you want to use the light.
This practical selection guide explains which specifications matter and which type of lighting is best suited to your home, balcony, patio, garden or event venue.
More LEDs do not automatically mean more light or a more pleasant result. Brightness is measured in lumens, among other things. A decorative string light with lots of small LEDs may be designed mainly to create atmosphere, while a garden light with fewer light points may be more functional.
Also consider the colour temperature. Warm white works well in a seating area or bedroom. RGB LED lighting is suitable when you want to change the colours for a party, gaming room or seasonal decoration.
A product with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. If you use it on a balcony or patio, moisture may cause damage. For sheltered outdoor areas, IP44 is common. This means protection against splashing water, but not against immersion or a direct, powerful jet of water.
A higher rating, such as IP65, provides greater protection against dust and water jets. Always check the product information and position the adapter, plug and connections according to the instructions.
Do not just measure the distance that needs to be lit; also measure the route from the socket to the start of the lighting. Check:
A solar string light does not require a socket, but works most reliably when the solar panel receives enough daylight. A plug-in string light generally provides a constant power supply, but does require a suitable socket.
For decorative indoor lighting, IP20 is often sufficient as long as the room is dry. For a covered patio or balcony, IP44 may be suitable. Do not place lighting in puddles, beneath a leaking roof edge or anywhere connections may remain wet for extended periods.
With LED garden lighting in the form of ground spotlights, the cable route is also important. Keep cables away from walkways to reduce the risk of tripping. An IP rating does not automatically make a product suitable for every type of weather.
Dimmable lighting is useful when you want more light during the day and a softer atmosphere in the evening. Check whether the dimming function is built into the product, operated via a remote control or requires an app. Not every LED lamp is compatible with an existing dimmer.
Smart lighting can be controlled via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or a smart-home platform. Check which app is required, whether account registration is needed and whether it is compatible with services such as Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit or Tuya. A simple string light with an on/off switch may be more practical if you do not need additional network functions.
Copper wires are flexible and suitable for decorative hanging. ABS and PVC are often used for housings and cables. With a string light featuring replaceable bulbs, you do not necessarily need to replace the entire set if one bulb stops working. However, check that replacement bulbs are available.
Clean lighting with a soft, dry cloth and unplug it before replacing bulbs or carrying out maintenance. Before buying, check whether the light source is integrated. On some garden lights, the LED cannot be replaced.
Why it suits this profile: According to the product information, this string light for indoor and outdoor use is intended for indoor use and features 20 coloured light balls. The total length is 435 cm, including 385 cm of illuminated length.
The IP20 rating makes it clear that this product is not suitable for an exposed patio. This helps you avoid using it incorrectly based solely on its appearance.
20 LED light points, warm white light and an on/off switch on the product. The light source is included.
Why it suits this profile: If you want to control several rooms centrally, this kit includes a Bridge Pro and two E27 LED bulbs with app control, dimming and support for multiple smart-home platforms.
The required app and indoor IP20 rating are listed in the product specifications. This makes it clear in advance that the system is not intended for outdoor use.
Two E27 bulbs providing 1100 lumens per light point, RGBW light and control via app, wall switch and remote control.
Why it suits this profile: The 30-metre length is suitable for a large patio, balcony, garden or event. The bulbs are replaceable and the cable runs from the mains.
The specifications state 50 + 2 LEDs, dimmability and replaceable bulbs. For outdoor use, make sure that the connections are not positioned in standing water.
Dimmable, with multiple lighting modes, a timer function and the option to expand the set to a maximum of 500 bulbs according to the product information.
Why it suits this profile: The eight hanging points and 192 multicolour LEDs are designed for Christmas trees, façades and seasonal decorations indoors or outdoors.
The IP44 rating and 5-metre connection cable can be checked in advance. IP44 means protection against splashing water, not complete waterproofing.
192 LEDs, eight hanging points, a memory function and a 220–240 V, 6 W adapter.
We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.
That depends on the IP rating. IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. IP44 provides protection against splashing water, for example on a sheltered balcony. For greater exposure to dust and water, IP65 may be suitable. Also check the adapter, plug and connections individually.
Consumption depends on the wattage, the number of lights and how long they are switched on. Multiply the power in watts by the number of hours of use. A timer, such as six hours on and eighteen hours off on some decorative lights, limits the operating time. With solar lighting, the battery is charged via the panel during the day; the operating time depends on the amount of light received and the battery capacity.
Lifespan varies by model and conditions of use. Manufacturers sometimes state an estimated lifespan, such as 25,000 or 30,000 hours. Treat this as a product specification, not a guarantee of a fixed number of years. Heat, moisture, frequent switching and damaged connections can affect operating life. Alongside the light source, therefore, check the housing, cable, warranty terms and suitability for the chosen location.
