Choosing LED lighting: how to find the right lamp for every room

LED lighting can provide practical illumination for a living room, bedroom, workspace or garden without immediately using lots of energy. However, low wattage is not the only thing to consider. A low-wattage lamp may not provide enough light, while a smart lamp may not be compatible with your fitting, Wi-Fi network or controls.

The following points will help you distinguish marketing terms from useful product specifications.

Common pitfalls when choosing LED lighting

1. Confusing wattage with brightness

Wattage indicates how much electrical power a lamp uses. It does not directly tell you how much light you will get. For that, look at the number of lumens.

  • For example, a 4W LED lamp can provide 340 lumens.
  • According to its product specification, an 8.7W smart E27 lamp can provide 806 lumens.
  • For general lighting in a living room, several light sources are often more practical than one small lamp with a high colour temperature.

An old comparison such as “replaces a 60W lamp” is mainly an indication. Always check the lumen value and consider the room in which you want to use the lamp.

2. Misjudging colour temperature

Colour temperature is expressed in Kelvin (K). Warm white light of around 2,200 to 3,000K generally creates a more relaxing atmosphere in a bedroom or seating area. Neutral white light of around 4,000K is often suitable for a desk or kitchen. Cooler light of around 6,000 to 6,500K can appear bright, but it is not comfortable for every living space.

A lamp with an adjustable colour temperature offers greater flexibility. However, pay attention to how it is adjusted: via a remote control, wall switch, app or smart assistant.

3. Dimmable does not always mean compatible with every dimmer

A dimmable lamp will not automatically work with every existing wall dimmer. Some LED lamps can only be dimmed via their own app or remote control. Other models require a suitable LED dimmer.

Therefore, check:

  1. Whether the lamp is actually dimmable.
  2. Whether the dimmer is included or needs to be purchased separately.
  3. Whether the fitting and voltage are compatible.
  4. Whether the lamp is suitable for an enclosed light fitting.

With an integrated LED module, as found in some floor and ceiling lamps, you usually cannot replace the light source separately. This is an important difference from a fitting for a separate E27 LED lamp or GU10 LED lamp.

Important specifications to check

Fitting and connection

The most common fittings in Dutch homes are E27, E14 and GU10. An E27 LED lamp has a large screw fitting, while E14 is smaller. GU10 lamps are usually secured by twisting two pins into a spotlight fitting.

Also check the voltage. Many standard lamps operate at 220-240V, while an LED floor lamp with an adaptor may operate at 12V. Switch off the power before replacing a lamp and follow the installation instructions.

Lumens, wattage and energy label

Use lumens to compare brightness and wattage to assess energy consumption. Energy consumption is often shown in kWh per 1,000 hours. For example, an Aigostar E27 lamp rated at 4W is listed as using 4 kWh per 1,000 hours.

Since the European energy labels were revised, classes generally range from A to G. An F rating does not mean that a lamp is unsuitable; compare its energy consumption with its light output and the number of hours it will be used.

Indoor or outdoor use

A lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. Do not use this type of model in a bathroom, open veranda or garden. For outdoor lighting, check the IP rating, installation method and protection against moisture.

A solar-powered lamp is useful for a garden path or patio where there is no power socket. Its operating time depends on its position, the season and the amount of sunlight. Do not place the solar panel under a covered area or close to tall plants.

Smart lighting or a simple LED lamp?

Smart lighting is an appealing choice if you want to use scenes, timers or remote control. A Wi-Fi lamp such as the TP-Link Tapo L530E works without a separate hub according to its product specification and uses the Tapo app. However, check whether your Wi-Fi network supports 2.4 GHz and whether the lamp is intended for indoor use only.

A simple LED lamp makes more sense when you mainly want to replace a fitting. A ceiling lamp with a remote control is useful if you do not want to keep walking over to a wall switch. A table lamp with three light settings may be all you need for a bedside table or desk, without having to install an app.

For all models, check the CE marking, the intended environment and the statutory guarantee. Product information from a brand about colour options, lifespan or light quality is a product specification or brand claim; do not automatically treat it as a personal guarantee of your experience.

Frequently asked questions about LED lighting

How many lumens do I need for a living room?

That depends on the size of the room, the number of light sources and how you intend to use it. A reading nook needs more focused light than mood lighting behind a cabinet. Look at the total number of lumens produced by all the lamps together and, where possible, choose several light sources.

How long does an LED lamp last?

The stated lifespan varies from model to model. For example, some lamps list 15,000 hours in their product information, while other integrated LED modules have a longer stated lifespan. Frequent switching, heat and use in an unsuitable enclosed fitting can affect real-world performance.

Does smart lighting use more electricity?

As well as producing light, a smart lamp uses a small amount of electricity to maintain its network connection. Total consumption depends on wattage, brightness, standby usage and operating time. Before choosing, compare the lumen value, wattage and energy label.
