Choosing LED lighting without costly mistakes: practical tips for every room

LED lighting is popular in Dutch living rooms, bedrooms, home offices and gaming rooms. These lights generally use little electricity, take up little space and are available as smart LED lighting, RGB LED lighting, LED strips, LED wall lights and ceiling lights. Even so, an appealing product can disappoint in practice.

For example, an attractive product photo tells you nothing about the length of the power cable, how the light is mounted or how it is controlled. By keeping the following points in mind, you can choose lighting that is better suited to your space and how you use it.

Three common pitfalls when choosing LED lighting

1. Focusing only on colour and design

RGB lighting with lots of colour modes looks appealing, but also check how the light is controlled. Some models work exclusively with a remote control, while others support app control, voice control or music synchronisation. An app may be more practical for everyday use, while a remote control may be all you need for a simple party setup.

Also consider the difference between decorative and functional lighting. An LED strip behind the television creates atmosphere, but it does not automatically replace a bright light above a desk.

2. Underestimating installation

Self-adhesive LED strips and wall panels do not stick equally well to every surface. Dust, grease, textured paint and moisture can cause the lighting to come loose. With wall panels, this could cause damage if the product falls.

Clean and dry the surface before installation. With some adhesive strips, gently warming the tape can help. Also check that the cable can reach the socket and that the chosen location has sufficient ventilation.

3. Choosing the wrong IP rating

For a dry living room or bedroom, indoor lighting is usually sufficient. For a balcony, covered patio or outdoor Christmas lights, the IP rating is more important. IP44 means protection against splashing water, but it does not mean that a product is completely waterproof or can remain outside in the rain for extended periods.

Use outdoor lighting in accordance with the product description and prevent immersion, exposed connections and damaged cables. A CE marking indicates that the manufacturer declares compliance with the relevant EU regulations; it is not a guarantee of a particular brightness or lifespan.

Important specifications to check in advance

Light type and colour temperature

RGB colours are useful for mood lighting. If you also want to read, work or cook, look for a product with an adjustable white light colour. A range such as 2800–6500 K runs from warm white to cooler white. Warm tones often suit a living room or bedroom, while cooler white can be useful at a desk.

When choosing an LED ceiling light, also check the light output, usually expressed in lumens. The wattage mainly indicates energy consumption and does not directly tell you how much light the lamp produces.

Power supply, connections and expansion

LED strips and gaming lights often use USB, an adapter or a fixed connection. Check:

  • whether a USB adapter is included;
  • how long the cable is;
  • whether multiple panels or strips can be connected to one another;
  • whether extensions from the same system are required;
  • whether the light is suitable for 220–240 V if you are connecting it directly to the mains.

An extendable strip is useful behind a desk or television, but only if compatibility is clearly stated. Do not use more additional panels than the recommended maximum.

Controls and dimming

Dimmable lighting offers more flexibility than a lamp with just one brightness level. Consider the control method: button, remote control, app or voice assistant. With smart LED lighting, it is also important to check whether a bridge or hub is required.

According to Philips’ own product information, the Philips Hue Essential LED Strip supports control via the Hue app and voice control, dimming and integration with multiple systems. Before buying, check whether your existing smart home platform is actually supported.

LED lighting costs and maintenance

Calculate electricity consumption using the formula: wattage × hours used ÷ 1,000 = kilowatt-hours. A 10-watt lamp that is switched on for five hours uses approximately 0.05 kWh per day. Multiply this by your current electricity tariff for a practical estimate.

Lifespan depends on the type of product, the quality of the electronics, heat dissipation and usage time. Do not allow LED panels and strips to become covered, and do not place adapters under carpets or in enclosed, warm spaces. Clean with a soft, dry cloth and do not use abrasive products or excessive moisture.

Frequently asked questions about LED lighting

Can I cut LED strips to size myself?

Only if the product information states that the strip can be cut. Cut exclusively at the indicated marks and take the connector into account. A strip that is not designed to be cut may become unusable if cut.

Can smart LED lighting always be controlled with an app?

No. Some products work with a remote control, others with an app, and additional hardware may sometimes be required. Before buying, check the required app, compatibility and whether a bridge is needed. App control is not automatic with a USB lamp.

Which LED lighting is suitable for outdoor use?

Check the IP rating and the complete installation instructions. IP44 provides protection against splashing water and may be suitable for certain outdoor locations, such as a sheltered façade or covered patio. Cable connections and adapters must remain dry and safe.
