Choosing LED lamps: a practical guide to dimmable, smart and energy-efficient lighting

LED lamps come in many forms, from a simple E27 LED bulb to a smart LED bulb, LED ceiling light or adjustable LED arc lamp. This wide choice can make comparisons difficult. A lamp that looks attractive will not always suit the room, fitting or intended use.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I filter product information based on verifiable specifications. This helps you quickly identify which lighting suits your home, office or workspace, and which marketing claims are best treated with some caution.

Common pitfalls when choosing LED lamps

1. Looking only at wattage

Wattage indicates how much electrical power a lamp uses, but it does not directly tell you how much light you will get. For that, look at the lumen output. A 4-watt lamp may be suitable as ambient lighting, while an LED panel with 3000 lumens is designed to brightly illuminate a larger room.

Always compare:

  • Lumens: the amount of light emitted.
  • Watts: the power consumed.
  • Energy efficiency class: the classification shown on the product label.
  • Light distribution: for example, a wide beam for general lighting.

2. Confusing colour temperature with colour rendering

Warm white light of around 2700 to 3000K generally feels softer in a living room or bedroom. Cool white light of around 5000 to 6500K has a whiter appearance and may be suitable for a workspace or kitchen. However, this does not tell you everything about how colours will appear in the room.

With CCT lighting or a lamp with an adjustable colour temperature, you can switch between different colour temperatures. Check how the controls work: via remote control, touch switch, standard wall switch or app.

3. Dimmable does not always mean compatible

A lamp may be described as dimmable, but that does not automatically mean it will work with every wall dimmer. With integrated LED lighting, dimming is often controlled using a remote control or built-in touch controls. For a separate LED bulb, you should check that the fitting and dimmer are compatible.

Also consider the construction. With a lamp featuring a non-replaceable LED module, the entire light fitting will eventually need to be replaced when the light source stops working.

Important specifications to check in advance

Lumens and light distribution

A lower lumen output is often sufficient for a bedside table or decorative LED table lamp. An LED desk lamp should illuminate the work surface directly, while an LED floor lamp can mainly provide extra light in a seating area. An LED ceiling light or LED panel will generally distribute light across a larger surface.

Also check the dimensions. A panel measuring 96 by 25 centimetres requires more ceiling space than a compact lamp with a diameter of 13 centimetres.

Kelvin and controls

Check whether the lamp has one fixed colour temperature or offers several settings. A 2700K lamp produces warm white light. A CCT model offering, for example, 3000-6500K provides a much wider range. This is useful when the same room is used for relaxing, eating and working.

Also check:

  • Is the lamp continuously dimmable or does it have fixed settings?
  • Is a remote control included?
  • Does the lamp work with an app or only with a switch?
  • Are batteries or a charger required?
  • Is the cable long enough for the intended position?

IP rating and installation

The IP rating indicates how well a product is protected against dust and moisture. IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. IP44 offers greater protection against splashing water, but does not automatically make a light fitting suitable for outdoor use or direct contact with water.

A rechargeable lamp with an IP54 rating may, according to the product specifications, offer better protection against dust and splashing water than an IP20 lamp. Place every lamp on a stable surface and follow the installation instructions. When installing a ceiling light, switch off the electricity before beginning installation or maintenance.

Frequently asked questions about LED lamps

Are LED lamps cheaper to run?

LED lamps generally use less power than traditional light sources with a comparable light output. For a fair comparison, check the wattage, the stated consumption in kWh per 1000 hours and the number of hours the lamp is used. The final cost depends on your electricity tariff and how long the lamp is switched on each day.

How long does an LED bulb last?

Lifespan varies by product and conditions of use. With integrated LED lighting, the module may not be replaceable. Before buying, check whether only the light source or the entire light fitting can be replaced. Keep the product information and take note of the statutory warranty rights that apply to your purchase.

Which LED lamp is suitable for a desk?

For a desk, an adjustable LED desk lamp, a dimmable LED table lamp or a lamp with adjustable colour temperature are practical options. Check the light output, how adjustable the lamp head is and the position of the switch. For a fixed ceiling solution, a CCT LED panel may distribute light more evenly across the work area.
