An LED lamp can quickly make a dark hallway, cupboard or bedroom more useful. However, not every model is suitable for the same space. A lamp that works well as ambient lighting on a bedside table may be too dim for a kitchen worktop. And battery-powered lighting that seems easy to install can become inconvenient if you have to keep replacing the batteries.
Pay particular attention to these common pitfalls:
Lumens (lm) indicate how much visible light a lamp produces. According to the stated product specifications, a compact lamp rated at 30 to 40 lm is mainly suitable for orientation or ambient lighting. You will generally need more light for a desk, worktop or dark cupboard. The Brilliant Helio LED table lamp is specified at 210 lm, while its power consumption is 2 W.
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K):
A dimmable LED lamp offers greater flexibility. Do check the type of dimming: some models offer stepless dimming, while others have only three or five fixed levels.
You will usually charge a rechargeable LED lamp with a built-in lithium battery via USB. This is practical when there is no power socket nearby. Check whether the lamp works with a standard 5V USB power source and whether a suitable cable or adapter is included.
With a USB rechargeable lamp, battery capacity is important. A 500mAh battery is compact, but has less reserve capacity than a 1,100mAh battery. The actual battery life also depends on the brightness and mode selected. Manufacturers may state operating times under specific conditions, so treat these figures as a guide.
Battery-powered lighting using AA or AAA batteries is ready to use straight away and can be placed flexibly. The downside is the ongoing cost of replacement batteries. Always check whether batteries are included. For example, the M.TK LED string light requires three AA batteries, but according to the product information these are not included.
An LED lamp with a motion sensor is useful in a hallway, on stairs, in a toilet or inside a wardrobe. Check the detection range and the light conditions under which the sensor operates. The models listed specify a PIR sensor with a range of approximately 3 to 5 metres; some only switch on when the ambient light falls below a certain LUX value.
For rented homes, magnetic mounting or adhesive installation is appealing because there is no need to drill. Do make sure that the surface is clean, flat and suitable. A long LED cupboard light measuring 30 or 40 cm can provide plenty of light, but measure the available space first.
An IP rating indicates the level of protection against dust and water. IP20 is intended for dry indoor areas. IP44 offers protection against splashing water, but does not mean that the lamp can be submerged or exposed to prolonged rain. Only use a lamp outdoors if the product information allows it.
Why it suits this profile: Two compact lamps provide a simple starting point for, say, the bedroom and hallway. USB charging means you do not immediately need a supply of disposable batteries.
The product information states that it has a built-in 500mAh battery, USB charging, motion detection and five brightness levels. This makes the key usage conditions clear in advance.
30 lm, three colour temperatures, five dimming levels and a stated operating time of up to 10 hours in sensor mode.
Why it suits this profile: This LED table lamp is suitable for a desk, sideboard or bedside table when you need more light than a small night light can provide.
The light output of 210 lm, colour temperature of 3,000 K and three touch settings are clearly specified. The lamp is intended for dry indoor areas and has an IP20 rating.
2 W integrated LED, 210 lm, warm light and a built-in 18650 lithium battery with USB-A connection.
Why it suits this profile: This set is designed for kitchens, wardrobes or bedrooms where you need longer, automatic lighting without installing wiring.
The length, battery capacity and sensor range are specified: 40 cm, 1,100mAh and approximately 3–5 metres. Three colour temperatures are also available.
Set of two, 61 LEDs per lamp, USB charging, PIR motion sensor and a slim size of 400 × 38 × 10 mm.
For decorative purposes, a lower light output is often sufficient. The Paladone Darth Vader Lightsaber Wall Lamp is a battery-powered LED wall lamp measuring 28 × 9,1 cm. According to the product description, it can be mounted using the included fittings. Use this lamp as themed ambient lighting rather than as the room’s main light. See the Darth Vader Lightsaber Wall Lamp for the latest product information.
An LED night light with warm white light and RGB colours offers a different approach. According to the specifications, the model with 12 SMD LEDs provides warm white light at 2,600–2,800 K, seven RGB colours, stepless dimming, USB charging and a light sensor. Follow the safety instructions: do not dismantle it, keep it dry and only use it with a suitable USB charger.
We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.
That depends on how you use it. A rechargeable model requires you to charge it, but does not use loose AA or AAA batteries. For occasional use, battery-powered lighting can be practical. For daily use, USB charging is often more convenient. Also compare the battery capacity, charging voltage and stated operating time.
Lifespan varies from product to product and depends on the conditions of use. An integrated LED is generally not designed to be replaced separately. With a rechargeable lamp, the battery may determine the useful life of the entire product sooner. Do not leave a lamp switched on continuously unnecessarily, and follow the manufacturer’s charging and safety instructions.
Place the lamp where the sensor has a clear view of the direction of movement, for example in a hallway, cupboard or beside a bed. Check the range of approximately 3–5 metres and pay attention to the LUX setting. Do not point a sensor lamp directly at a strong light source, as this may affect automatic activation.
