An LED lamp may seem simple to choose, but product pages do not always emphasise the information that makes a real difference at home. For example, a lamp may be wireless but still need frequent charging. A motion sensor may sound convenient but only respond when it is dark enough. And a lamp designed for outdoor use is not automatically rainproof.
For a bedroom, nursery, child’s room, hallway, kitchen, wardrobe, balcony or garden, three things are particularly important: the right power supply, suitable light output and an appropriate protection rating. Below, we explain what to look for and which popular options suit different situations.
A rechargeable LED lamp or wireless lamp is easy to position, but it has a battery that needs charging regularly. Therefore, check:
For battery-powered lighting, you should also check whether batteries are included. For example, the M.TK light chain requires 3 AA batteries, which are not included.
RGB colours, a timer, a sensor and multiple dimming settings are useful for creating ambience, but they say little about the amount of light produced. Also look at the light output in lumens. A night light producing 30 or 40 lumens is intended for orientation and ambience, not for lighting an entire room.
A higher light output is often more suitable for a desk or worktop. For example, the Brilliant Helio table lamp specifies 210 lumens, while its integrated LED lamp produces warm light at 3000 K.
A lamp with IP44 is protected against splashing water and solid objects measuring 1 millimetre or more. This makes it suitable for use on a covered balcony, terrace or in a garden as decorative lighting. IP44 does not mean that the lamp can be submerged or exposed to heavy rain for long periods.
A lamp with IP20, such as an indoor table lamp, should only be used in dry rooms. Always check the IP rating before hanging a lamp on a balcony, in a bathroom or outdoors.
Colour temperature is measured in kelvin (K):
A table lamp with a touch dimmer is useful when you need more light during the day and a softer setting in the evening. Check whether the lamp dims continuously or only has three or five fixed settings.
A lamp with a motion sensor usually does not respond to movement alone. Many models only switch on when the ambient light falls below a certain level. With the compact rechargeable night lights, for example, the stated threshold is a maximum of 20 lux, with a sensor range of 3 to 5 metres.
This is practical in a dark hallway or beside a bed. In a brightly lit room, however, the lamp may not switch on, even when movement is detected.
Measure the space where the lamp will go before ordering. Slim models are useful for cupboards and shelves. The 30 cm ultra-thin cabinet light is 10 mm thick and, according to the product information, can be installed with tape without drilling. The 40 cm version has the same thickness and also includes two lamps.
When installing with tape, check:
Why it suits this profile: A practical starting point for a bedroom, nursery or hallway, thanks to two compact lights, USB charging and automatic activation when movement is detected in the dark.
The specifications state the sensor function, three colour temperatures and five dimming settings. This means you do not have to rely solely on a general claim about ambient lighting.
500 mAh rechargeable battery, 3–5 metre sensor range, 30 lumens and two operating modes.
Why it suits this profile: Ideal for anyone looking for a stylish wireless lamp for a table, balcony, terrace or garden, with dimming and colour-setting options.
The IP44 rating makes it clear that the lamp is protected against splashing water, not immersion. This gives you a more precise idea of where it can be used than the term outdoor lamp alone.
RGB function, warm light at 3000 K, touch dimmer, integrated battery and USB charging.
Why it suits this profile: A sensible choice for kitchen cupboards, wardrobes and dark shelves where you need automatic lighting without wiring or drilling.
The size, installation method, sensor range and charging details are listed separately. This allows you to check in advance whether 40 cm and 3–5 metres are suitable for the space.
61 LEDs, three colour temperatures, a 1100mAh battery, USB charging and two lamps per set.
Why it suits this profile: Perfect for a themed bedroom, playroom or entertainment space where decoration and soft LED lighting come together.
The product information clearly states that the lamp runs on batteries and is wall-mounted. This makes it clear in advance that you do not need a socket, but will need to replace the batteries.
Measures 28 × 9,1 cm, battery powered, wall-mounting materials included and a design that is clearly recognisable as a decorative lamp.
We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.
Place a night light on a stable surface and keep it away from moisture, heat and loose cables. With a lamp that has a motion sensor, installation height is important: point the sensor towards the area where you walk past, not at a wall or piece of furniture.
Use a compatible USB power supply for rechargeable models. Clean the lamp with a soft, dry cloth and do not open an integrated battery or LED module yourself. When using a lamp outdoors, check after installation that the connections are not lying in standing water.
This depends on its wattage and how long it is switched on. A 1-watt lamp that is on for 5 hours a day uses less energy than a 5-watt model that stays on continuously. Check the product page for the wattage and stated energy information. With battery- and rechargeable products, charging frequency and battery capacity also play a role.
The lifespan varies depending on the product and the conditions in which it is used. On some models, the integrated LED module cannot be replaced. Therefore, check in advance whether the manufacturer states a lifespan, whether the battery is replaceable and what warranty terms apply. For consumers in the EU, many products come with at least the statutory legal guarantee of conformity; additional terms may vary by product.
Only if the product information says that you can. Check the IP rating. IP44 is suitable for splashing water and decorative use on, for example, a sheltered balcony or terrace, but not for immersion. A lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces and should not be used outdoors or in a damp environment.
