How to choose LED headlight bulbs for your car: find the right fit without buying the wrong ones

Switching to LED headlight bulbs for your car might seem straightforward: take the old bulb out, put the new one in. In practice, problems often arise from the wrong fitting, insufficient space inside the headlight housing, or a vehicle computer that throws up an error message. A high lumen claim also doesn’t automatically tell you anything about the light distribution on the road.

This buying guide helps motorists, SUV and van drivers, and DIY enthusiasts to compare with confidence. Pay particular attention to the bulb type, installation, heat dissipation, and whether it’s legally suitable for your vehicle.

Three common pitfalls with LED headlights

1. Ordering the wrong fitting

H4, H7, H1 and H11 look similar, but they are not interchangeable. For xenon or HID systems, you need different designations, such as D1S/D1R, D2S/D2R, D3S/D3R or D4S/D4R. A bulb that almost fits physically can still have the wrong connector, base or light position.

So check first:

  • the type on your old bulb;
  • your car’s handbook;
  • the seller’s vehicle or parts finder;
  • whether the bulb is for dipped beam, main beam or fog light.

2. Confusing high light output with good visibility

Manufacturers sometimes make claims like “300%” or “600% brighter”. According to the brands’ own information, these are comparisons with halogen or standard bulbs. The actual light output also depends on the reflector, projector, alignment and condition of the headlight unit.

A 1:1 LED replacement with chips in the same position as the original light source can help keep the beam pattern recognisable. However, that is no guarantee for every headlight. After fitting, have the beam checked to ensure it is correctly aligned and doesn’t dazzle oncoming traffic.

3. Seeing CANbus compatibility as a universal guarantee

A CANbus error-free LED bulb is designed to reduce error messages, flickering or radio interference. Even so, sensitive vehicle systems can still trigger a warning. Some models require an additional decoder. That’s why the product information for various bulbs states that additional CANbus equipment may be needed for certain cars.

Important specifications to compare

Fitting and light function

The fitting determines whether the bulb can be installed at all. Commonly used options include:

  • H4 LED bulbs: usually combined dipped and main beam in one bulb;
  • H7 LED bulbs: often separate dipped or main beam;
  • H1 LED bulbs: frequently used for main beam or specific headlight functions;
  • H11 LED bulbs: often for dipped beam or fog lights;
  • H8/H9 LED bulbs: found in fog light and headlight functions, among others;
  • HB3/9005 LED bulbs: widely used for main beam;
  • HIR2/9012 LED bulbs: check specifically whether your car uses this fitting;
  • D1S/D1R, D2S/D2R, D3S/D3R and D4S/D4R: intended as replacements within an HID headlight unit, not for a halogen housing.

Also check whether you are replacing LED dipped beam and main beam separately. A bulb for one function does not automatically replace both.

Colour temperature

6000K to 6500K white car lighting gives a cool white appearance. 6000K is often described as cool white; 6500K typically looks whiter with a slightly bluish tint. The colour temperature alone says nothing about the light intensity.

For everyday driving, an even beam pattern is more important than just the highest possible Kelvin or lumen value. Also check whether the bulb is permitted in your vehicle and headlight unit. A product that technically fits is not automatically suitable for use on public roads or for the MOT. Check your vehicle documentation, the product marking and the current UK approval requirements.

Cooling, sealing and dimensions

LEDs convert some of the electrical energy into heat. Products with an aluminium housing, cooling fins or a fan dissipate that heat. A fan can provide extra cooling, but it must fit and can generate noise. A fanless design avoids moving parts, but requires suitable heat dissipation.

Also pay attention to:

  • IP65, IP67 or IP68: a higher IP rating indicates greater protection against dust and water according to the relevant standard;
  • the length and diameter of the bulb;
  • the available space behind the dust cover;
  • an integrated or external driver;
  • the stated operating voltage, for example 9–32 V or 11–18 V.

A stated lifespan of 50,000 or 60,000 hours is a manufacturer’s claim under certain conditions. Treat this as a product specification, not a guaranteed service life in every UK car.

Installation and checks after purchase

Switch off the lights, let the old bulb cool down completely and follow the fitting instructions. Do not touch LED chips or hot metal parts. After installation, check:

  1. that dipped beam and main beam switch correctly;
  2. that both bulbs show the same colour and light intensity;
  3. that there is no flickering or dashboard warning;
  4. that the dust cover and sealing ring close properly;
  5. that the beam does not point upwards or dazzle oncoming traffic.

If an error message appears, a CANbus decoder may be needed. If problems persist, it’s wise to refit the original bulb and have the car checked by a garage. LED fog lights for cars have the same points to watch: fitting, beam, sealing and legal suitability.

Frequently asked questions about LED headlights for cars

Are LED headlights suitable for every car?

No. The fitting, headlight unit, available space and vehicle electronics determine suitability. An H7 bulb, for example, will not fit an H4 fitting. With D1S, D2S, D3S and D4S systems, the bulb must be specifically intended for an HID unit.

How long do LED headlights last?

Product pages often state 50,000 to 60,000 hours. According to the product specifications, these are stated values under certain conditions. Heat, vibration, moisture, usage time and the quality of the headlight housing can affect the practical lifespan.

Do LED bulbs use less power than halogen?

LEDs can have a different ratio of light output to electrical power, but the actual consumption varies by model. So compare the stated wattage per bulb or per pair. Also check whether your vehicle uses a CANbus system, because lower electrical consumption can sometimes trigger an error message.
