How to choose LED car headlights: find the right fitting and avoid costly mistakes

Replacing your halogen bulbs with LED car headlights may seem straightforward. However, many disappointing purchases happen because a bulb does not fit the socket, the beam pattern is underwhelming or the dashboard displays an error message. A high lumen rating does not automatically mean better visibility on the road, either.

The three most common pitfalls:

  • The wrong fitting: H4, H7, H11, 9005/HB3, 9006/HB4 and 9012/HIR2 are not interchangeable.
  • Marketing around brightness: Claims such as “300% brighter” come from the brand’s product description and will not be equally visible in every car or headlight.
  • CANbus is not always error-free: An integrated CANbus module can help limit flickering or error messages, but some sensitive vehicles may still require an additional decoder.

So first check the type number of your current bulb, and only then consider light colour, cooling and ease of installation.

Check your car’s fitting first

The fitting is often stated on the old bulb, in the vehicle handbook or on a vehicle parts list. Common connections include:

  • H4 LED headlight: usually combines dipped beam and main beam in one bulb.
  • H7 LED headlight: often used for dipped beam or main beam, depending on the vehicle.
  • H8, H9 and H11 LED bulb: common versions for headlights and fog lights.
  • 9005/HB3 LED bulb: generally a version for main beam.
  • 9006/HB4 LED bulb: often used for dipped beam or fog lighting.
  • 9012/HIR2 LED bulb: a specific fitting that cannot simply be replaced with H11 or H7.

A product listing several fittings does not automatically contain all variants in one pack. Check that the version you choose genuinely matches your original bulb. Most sets in this overview are sold as a pack of two.

Three technical points you should not overlook

1. Beam pattern matters more than lumens alone

An LED chip should sit in roughly the same position as the filament in the original halogen bulb. A 1:1 design can help make proper use of the existing reflector or projector. According to ENdureLite’s product description, some models use a narrow chip gap and a 1:1 position to limit dark spots and stray light.

Always check the beam pattern after installation. A bulb that produces a high lumen output on paper may still cast light incorrectly in your headlight. Incorrectly adjusted headlights can dazzle oncoming drivers and may affect road safety or vehicle inspections.

2. Cooling determines heat dissipation

LED bulbs produce less heat on the light-emitting side than halogen bulbs, but the electronics and LED chip still need to release heat. You will therefore find two designs:

  • LED headlights with a cooling fan: active cooling, often suitable when there is enough room inside the headlight housing.
  • Fanless LED bulbs: no moving fan, usually compact and quieter, but all heat dissipation takes place through the aluminium housing.

A stated lifespan of, for example, 50,000 hours, is a figure provided in the brand’s product information. Actual lifespan depends on factors including temperature, vibration, voltage and usage. Also check that a fan will not come into contact with the headlight’s sealing cap.

3. CANbus, water resistance and regulations

A CANbus error-free bulb is designed to reduce the likelihood of the vehicle computer reporting a faulty bulb. According to ENdureLite’s product descriptions, several models are CANbus-ready or feature integrated CANbus technology. This is not a guarantee for every car; sensitive systems may require an additional decoder.

IP68 waterproof refers to protection against dust and water according to the stated classification. It does not automatically mean that the bulb is suitable for every headlight housing or weather condition. Check that the original seal closes properly.

Also pay attention to legal approval. Not every LED replacement for a halogen bulb is permitted for use on public roads in every combination of vehicle, headlight and function. Check current vehicle compatibility, any ECE approval and the manufacturer’s information. For the OSRAM NIGHT BREAKER LED Vintage, for example, you must consult the official compatibility list; approval applies only to the vehicles, functions and countries specified.

Looking for more options?

We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.

Installation: what does plug-and-play mean?

With a plug-and-play car bulb, you connect the LED bulb to the existing plug without a separate wiring harness or external driver. This often makes installation easier, but check the following beforehand:

  1. Whether the bulb physically fits inside the headlight housing.
  2. Whether the sealing cap still closes completely.
  3. Whether the polarity and plug match.
  4. Whether the cooling fan has sufficient clearance.
  5. Whether the beam pattern is correctly adjusted after installation.

Switch off the lights and allow the bulb to cool before you begin. Do not touch the LED chip, and test both dipped beam and main beam after installation. If an error message or flickering occurs, a suitable CANbus decoder may be required.

Frequently asked questions about LED car headlights

Are LED headlights brighter than halogen bulbs?

According to some brand descriptions, LED bulbs can be “300% brighter” than halogen. This is a marketing claim made by the relevant brand and is not a fixed result for every car. The actual outcome depends on the headlight design, adjustment, light colour and beam pattern quality.

How long do LED headlights last?

According to the manufacturers, many models in this overview state a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. This is a quoted figure under specific conditions. Heat, moisture, vibration and voltage fluctuations can affect the practical lifespan.

Do LED headlights use less power than halogen bulbs?

LED bulbs can use less electrical power than halogen bulbs while providing comparable light output, but always compare the stated wattage per set. Also check that your car recognises the bulb. Lower power consumption can actually trigger a CANbus error message more quickly if the electronics are not designed to accommodate it.
