Choosing LED car bulbs: how to find the right fitting and avoid buying the wrong ones

Want to replace halogen lighting with LED car bulbs? At first glance, the choice seems simple: check the fitting, order the bulb and install it. In practice, problems are usually caused by the wrong fitting, insufficient space inside the headlamp housing or a fault warning on the dashboard.

This buying guide helps motorists, DIY enthusiasts and motorcyclists make an informed choice. You’ll learn what to look for when choosing LED headlight bulbs for cars, fog lights and plug-and-play replacement bulbs.

Three common pitfalls when choosing LED car bulbs

1. Confusing the fitting with the car model

A bulb suitable for a Volkswagen, Ford or SUV will not automatically fit every version of that make. The correct size is determined by the fitting and the bulb’s function. Common types include H1, H4, H7, H11, HB3/9005 and HB4/9006.

So check:

  • the old bulb or the vehicle handbook;
  • the fitting on the lamp housing;
  • the functions: dipped beam, main beam, fog light or combined dipped and main beam;
  • the vehicle voltage, usually 12 volts.

Also look out for alternative designations. H4, 9003 and HB2 often refer to the same fitting type. HB3 and 9005 are also different names for a similar fitting.

2. A high lumen claim does not tell the whole story

Some brands quote extremely high luminous flux figures. According to KATUR’s own product description, certain HB3, H4, H11 and HB4 models deliver up to 26,000 lumens per pair. However, that figure alone does not indicate how useful the beam will be in your headlamp.

The reflector, lens and position of the LED chips all help determine the beam pattern. A bulb with incorrectly positioned chips can create dark spots or scattered light. So check whether the bulb has a 1:1 halogen shape, a clearly defined beam pattern and a suitable construction. Have the headlamps realigned after installation and avoid dazzling oncoming drivers.

3. “Plug-and-play” does not always mean trouble-free

An integrated connector makes installation easier, but every car has its own electrical monitoring system. Some vehicles detect an LED bulb as faulty because it consumes less power. This can result in a fault warning, flickering or the bulb switching off.

According to the product description, CANbus LED bulbs with a built-in driver can reduce this risk. However, compatibility is not guaranteed for every vehicle. Check whether your car uses a CANbus system and whether a separate decoder or resistor is required. Do not use additional components without taking heat generation and the manufacturer’s instructions into account.

Important specifications to check

Fitting and lighting function

First, choose the exact fitting. Examples include:

  • H1 LED bulbs: often used for main beam, dipped beam or fog lighting, depending on the vehicle.
  • H4 LED bulbs: generally combine dipped beam and main beam in a single bulb.
  • H7 LED bulbs: widely used for dipped or main beam.
  • H11 LED bulbs: often used in headlamps or fog lights.
  • HB3 9005 LED bulbs: usually used for main beam or certain headlamp functions.
  • HB4 9006 LED bulbs: used for dipped beam or fog lights, depending on the vehicle.

Use the old bulb as a reference, but if in doubt, rely on the vehicle documentation or a parts list with registration number check.

Colour temperature

6000K white car bulbs produce a cool-white appearance. This looks different from the warmer yellow light of halogen bulbs. A higher Kelvin value does not automatically mean better lighting; it mainly describes the perceived colour.

Also consider the beam pattern and suitability for rain, fog and wet roads. Cool-white light may appear brighter, while contrast and reflections vary depending on the conditions.

Cooling and installation space

LED bulbs convert some of their energy into heat. Check that there is enough room inside the headlamp housing for the rear of the bulb, a fan or a heat sink.

According to the product description, a fanless design may be quieter and has no fan that could seize up. Bulbs with a fan can actively dissipate heat, but they need sufficient space and must not touch the dust cover or cables.

An IP65 or IP68 rating provides information about protection against dust and water under the relevant standard. However, check that the complete bulb construction, connector and installation position meet the same requirements. “Waterproof LED headlight bulbs” are therefore not automatically suitable for immersion or every installation outside the original housing.

Recommended choices by user profile

Suitable for: Budget-conscious beginners
KATUR HB3 LED headlight bulbs

KATUR HB3 LED Headlight Bulbs

Installation and checks in practice

Switch off the lights and allow halogen bulbs to cool completely before you start. Work with clean hands or gloves and avoid touching the light source unnecessarily. After installation, check:

  1. that the bulb is securely fitted;
  2. that the rubber dust cover closes properly;
  3. that dipped and main beam work independently;
  4. that there is no flickering or dashboard warning;
  5. that the beam does not point upwards or veer to the side.

Also check the Dutch and European approval requirements for your vehicle and lighting function. A bulb that fits physically is not automatically approved for use on public roads. If in doubt, a garage or testing body can assess the installation and alignment.

Frequently asked questions about LED car bulbs

Are LED headlight bulbs easy to install yourself?

With a genuine plug-and-play connection, replacement can be relatively straightforward. However, the available space, dust cover and fitting vary from one vehicle to another. Always check the installation instructions and test the beam pattern after fitting.

How long do LED car bulbs last?

Lifespan depends on heat dissipation, usage time, voltage and sealing. Brands sometimes state 50,000 operating hours; according to ACM guidelines, this should be treated as a product claim made by the brand, not as a guaranteed service life in every car.

Do LED bulbs use less power than halogen bulbs?

LEDs can have a lower power consumption for comparable lighting functions, but check the specifications of both bulbs. The lower consumption can trigger a CANbus fault warning in some cars. A suitable driver or CANbus solution may then be required.
